INTRODUCTION TO MATHEMATICS A -ITM 401S

UNIT 1

Revision on Complex calculations

1.1 The calculator

1.1.1 Setting the display

The calculator may be set to display the fixed or exponential mode showing a desired number of
decimals. The exponential mode may be the scientific or engineering type display.

1.1.2 Hierarchy of Operations

The calculator performs common arithmetic operations in the following order:

Brackets; multiplication; division; addition; subtraction (BDMAS) (highest to lowest).
Additional mathematical functions are executed on a higher order: reciprocal; square and
square-root of a number; number raised to a power; any root of a number; trigonometric
functions; inverse trigonometric functions; logarithms (common and natural).

Note: The calculation has to be done in one step by using parenthesis. (No recording of
interim answers.)

EXAMPLES
Calculate (3 dec): 1.

2.

1.2 Fixed and standard (exponential) forms of numbers

EXAMPLES
0,00234 = 2,34 x 10 –3
25674 = 2,5674 x 104

EXERCISE 1
Calculate the following:

1. (give answer correct to 4 decimals) (1,0564)

2. (give answer correct to 5 decimals) (-0,02349)

3. + (give answer correct to

6 decimals) (5,981101)
4. Write 23696 in standard form.
5. Write 0,0897 in standard form.
6. Write 2,375 x10-3 in fixed form.
