3 Analyzing How Visual and Multimedia Element
Contribute to the Meaning of Text

Directions: Read and comprehend the factual text below. Pick out each main topic and very
important supporting detail then write your summary about it.
The Midas Touch
In ancient Greek, there was a king named Midas. He had a lot of gold and everything
he needed. He also had a beautiful daughter. Midas loved his gold very much, but he loved
his daughter more than his riches.
One day, a satyr named Silenus got drunk and passed out in Midas’ rose garden.
Believing that Satyrs always bring good luck, Midas lets Silenus rest in his palace until he is
sober, against the wishes of his wife and daughter. Silenus is a friend of Dionysus, the god of
wine and celebration. Upon learning Midas’ kindness towards his friend, Dionysus decides to
reward the keg.
When asked to wish for something, Midas says “I wish everything I touch turns to
gold”. Although Dionysus knew it was not a great idea, he granted Midas his wish.
Happy that his wish was granted, Midas went around touching random things in the
garden and his palace and turned them all into gold. He touched an apple, and it turned into a
shiny gold apple. His subjects were astonished but happy to see so much gold in the palace.
In his happiness, Midas went and hugged his daughter, and before he realized, he
turned her into a lifeless, golden statue! Aghast, Midas ran back to the garden and called for
Dionysus. He begged the god to take away his power and save his daughter. Dionysus gives
Midas a solution to change everything back to how it was before the wish. Midas learned his
lesson and lived the rest of his life contended with what he had.

Little Red Riding Hood
One beautiful autumn afternoon, Little Red Riding Hood is sent by her mother
to take some goodies to her grandma. A wolf found out about this and decided to break
into the grandmother’s house, put on her clothes and eat the grandmother. Then, he
waited for the little girl to show up, so that he could give him the treats. Little Red
Riding Hood came over and the wolf pretended to be her grandmother. He exposed his
true identity. As he was about to eat her, a woodsman showed up to the rescue. The
wolf run away and the granny jumped out from the wolf’s mouth.

The Five Elements of Multimedia
1. TEXT
Text is the basic element of multimedia. It involves the use of text types, sizes, colors
and background color. In a multimedia application, other media or screen can be linked
through the use of text. This is what we call Hypertext. To produce an effective multimedia
program there are three things to be considered. These are:
the position of the text on the screen
length of the message; and,
the legibility of the text.
2. GRAPHICS
Graphics make the multimedia more attractive. They help to illustrate ideas through still
pictures. There are two types of graphics: bitmaps (paint graphics) and vector (draw
graphics).

3. AUDIO
A multimedia application may require the use of speech, music, and sound effects.
These are called audio or sound element.
4. VIDEO
Video provides a powerful impact in a multimedia program. In multimedia
application, the digital video is gaining popularity because of the following reasons:
*video clips can be edited easily,
*digital video can be stored like any other files in the computer and the quality of
video can still be maintained.
5. ANIMATION
Animation is a process of making a static image looks like it is moving. In multimedia
digital animation is used. Digital animation can be categorized into two broad area: 2D (2
Dimension) and 3D (3 Dimension) animations.

There are five main elements of Multimedia that contribute to the
meaning of a text:
1. Text – the basic element of multimedia
2. Graphics – make the multimedia application attractive. They help

The Shepherd Boy & the Wolf
A Shepherd boy tended his master's sheep near a dark
forest not far from the village. Soon he found life in the pasture
very dull. All he could do to amuse himself was to talk to his
dog or play on his shepherd's pipe.
One day as he sat watching the sheep and the quiet
forest and thinking what he would do should he see a wolf, he
thought of a plan to amuse himself.
His Master had told him to call for help should a wolf
attack the flock, and the villagers would drive it away. So now,
though he had not seen anything that even looked like a Wolf, he ran toward the village shouting at
the top of his voice, "Wolf! Wolf!"
As he expected, the Villagers who heard the cry dropped their work and ran in great
excitement to the pasture. But when they got there, they found the Boy doubled up with laughter at
the trick he had played on them.
A few days later the Shepherd Boy again shouted, "Wolf! Wolf!" Again, the Villagers ran to
help him, only to be laughed at again.
Then one evening as the sun was setting behind the forest and the shadows were creeping out
over the pasture, a wolf really did spring from the underbrush and fall upon the Sheep.
In terror the boy ran toward the village shouting "Wolf! Wolf!" But though the Villagers
heard the cry, they did not run to help him as they had before. "He cannot fool us again," they said.
The Wolf killed a great many of the Boy's sheep and then slipped away into the forest.
Questions:
1. Where did the boy tend his master’s sheep?

3. What did his master tell him if he would see a wolf?
4. How many times did the boy fool the villagers?
5. Why did the villagers ignore the boy when the wolf truly attacked the sheep?

the truth, they will not believe you anymore?
Jenny grew under the care of her grandparents. Her
Lolo smoked a lot. Despite of pieces of advice that her Lola
gave him, he did not listen and to anybody else. Until one
day, he was rushed to the hospital because of shortness of
breath. They were shaken when the doctor said that the
grandpa had a lung cancer. Jenny saw his pain and agony
because of cancer. After a week, he died. Every time Jenny
saw a cigarette, the pain of losing her Lolo flashed back to
her memories.
Jane was invited to a pool party. She attended with her
girlfriends. On their way to their cottage, she saw a “no
running” sign. The sign brought her memory back when she
was six years old; they celebrated her 6th birthday at the pool.
After having lunch, she and her cousin were running around
the pool area. They saw the no running sign, but they ignored
it. She chased her cousin and pak! Jane slipped on the slippery
floor and one of her bones got fractured.
