RURAL ROADS
Time : 3 hours Max. Marks : 70
Note : i) First Question is compulsory and answer any four questions from the
remaining six questions. Each question carries 14 Marks.
ii) Answers to each question must be written at one place only and in the
same order as they occur in the question paper.
iii) Missing data, if any, may suitably be assumed.
1. a) What are the factors controlling rural road alignment? [ 2]
b) List out the desirable properties of road aggregates. [ 1]
c) Classify the various distresses found in flexible pavement. [ 2]
d) Why planning is required for rural roads? [ 2]
e) List out any three surveys to be carried out for soil material [ 2]
investigation.
f) Write any three governing factors for route selection of rural roads. [ 2]
g) What are the requirements of good shoulder? [ 2]
h) Write any three failure criteria’s considered in rigid pavement design. [ 1]
2. a) How can the present rural road systems be improved in terms of its [ 7]
serviceability?
b) Show the Cross sections of the flexible and rigid pavements. [ 7]
3. a) Design the thickness of a rural road as per IRC:SP:72-2007 [ 14 ]

Take the proportion of the commercial vehicles on laden, semi-laden
and over loaded as 67, 21 & 12% respectively. No. of lanes = 2,
traffic growth rate = 65 % per annum. Design life = 15 yrs.

d) Crust details
Sub base CBR = 15%, thickness = 120 mm
Base CBR = 30 %, thickness = 180 mm
Mean penetration of DCP 60° = 55 mm/ blow
