Comparative Paragraph Practice:

Structure
Topic sentence – Introduces the theme of dehumanisation in both texts.
Explain sentences (2-3) – give details how both texts display dehumanisation.
Example sentences (2-3) – evidence of events and quotes from both texts that
demonstrate dehumanisation.
Link sentence – conclude that both texts have the theme of dehumanisation.

Example TEEL Sentences:

Topic Sentence: The Giver and Hunger Games are popular film texts based on
dystopian novels where control and power is maintained by dehumanisation of
the characters.

Explain Sentences - While Hunger Games is based on a dystopic society where

problems occur when authorities in the Capitol exert control on all districts and
Katniss rebels against this control, and The Giver is based on a society where
problems occur from being too perfect and same, Jonas stands out as a rebel for
the people.

Example sentences - In ‘The Hunger Games’, Katniss is dehumanized by Flavius

when getting her hair and makeup done as he comments, “Oh, we're just saying
we might need to hose you down again before we take you to Cinna.”. Similarly,
in ‘The Giver’, Jonas realises that the community leaders have dehumanized
everyone by taking away their right to make choices when he says, “It's just
that... without the memories it's all meaningless.”

Link Sentence - Evidently both texts share similarities where dehumanisation is a

controlling tool for those in power and it is up to one teenager, Katniss or Jonas
to stand up against this control and rebel.
