Experiment No. 07
STANDARD TEST FOR OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT &
MAXIMUM DRY DENSITY OF SOIL
(ASTM D1883-09)
Purpose: To determine the relationship between moisture content & density of soli with 4.5
kg rammer dropped from height of 30 cm.
Apparatus: Proctor Molds, Rammer, Loading device, Oven, Moisture containers, Balance,
Straight edge and Mixing tools.
Theory: The proctor compaction test is geotechnical testing method used to determine the soil
compaction properties, specifically to determine the optimal moisture content (OMC) at which the
soil can reaches to its max: dry density (MDD).
Significance of test: This test method is used to evaluate the potential strength of subgrade,
subbase, and base course material, including recycled materials for use in road and airfield
pavements. With the increase in water content, initially dry density increases and become
maximum. With further increase in water content, the dry density decreases.

Procedure:
Take three specimens of dried oven samples each of about 5 kg and must be compacted so
that their compacted densities range from 95% to 100% generally with 10, 30 and 65 blows.
Add water to the first specimen (compact it in five layer by giving 10 blows per layer)
Weigh of empty mould and after compaction, remove the collar and level the surface.
Remove the sample from mould and slice vertically through and obtain a small sample
for moisture determination.
Plot the dry density against moisture content and find out the maximum dry density and
optimum moisture for the soil.
Draw the graph between the OMC and MMD.
Repeat the procedure for next sample with increase in % of water.
