Environmental Impacts of lrrigation Systems

' Over the last 35 years, agricultural production has increased significantly around the world
lt's estimated that half of that increase can be attributed to the advancement and spread of
irrigation technology. However, recent research shows that the environmental consequences
of this technique may be more serious than previously thought.
2
Waterlogging, a state in which the ground becomes oversaturated with water, is a
particularly hannful effect of irrigation. When waterlogging occurs, the soil, heavy under
the weight of the water, begins to become tightly packed. [a] • Thus, it is difficult for oxygen
to enter the soil, and without it, plant roots essentially suffocate. [b] • According to experts,
approximately 10 percent of the world's arable land is waterlogged [e] • Additionally, it's
difficult to prevent waterlogging from occurring because tests that determine whether a field
has a high possibility of becoming waterlogged are very expensive. [d] •
3
Another consequence of irrigation is salinization, or the accumulation of salt crystals

Bird Navigation Techniques

1
Many species ofbirds migrate, flying up to 20,000 miles to temporary habitats in response
to seasonal changes in temperature and precipitation. ln many cases, migratory birds retum
to the sarne lake or particular piece ofcoastline year after year, which demonstrates their
ability to find their way with surprising accuracy. Research suggests that birds have at least
two prirnary methods ofnavigation.
2
Some biologists bave shown tbat birds probably use the location of celestial bodies,
such as the sun and the stars, to orient themselves. Humans often use landmarks like rivers,
mountains, and oceans, to determine their dircction. ln contrast, birds seem to ignore
geographical features and depend on a kind ofinternai clock tbat tells them their location
based on the time ofday and the position ofthe sun or, ifthey are flying at night, the stars.
For instance, scientists bave observed that when the stars are obscured by clouds, birds cannot
navigate as accurately as when the stars are dearly visible.

ln addition to the sun and stars, birds may also use Earth itself as a kind of compass.

Some scientists argue tbat birds navigate using Earth's magnetic field. Certain metais cause
Earth's poles to have a magnetic pull, and birds rnay use this pull to determine wbat direction

determining direction. Recently, researchers also discovered iron oxide, a magnetic material,

Control of Malaria
I
Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite in the blood. It has existed since at Jeast 2700 BC,
when its symptoms, including headache, fever, and nausea, were described in Chinese
medical writings. However, unlike many other ancient diseases, malaria persists today, with
approximately 225 million cases reported in 2009. Advances in medical sciences have made it
possible to control the disease, but malaria is difficult to eradicate entirely for severa! reasons.
2
Though early doctors developed some treatrnents for malaria using plants and herbs, it
was not until the true nature of the disease was discovered that it was possible to formulate
a more effective treatrnent. [aJ • ln 1880, a French surgeon discovered that malaria was
not caused by a virus, but by a parasite living in the blood of infected people. [b) • Toe
discovery that malaria was not a virai infection led to developments in medicine that focused
on destroying the parasite. [c]• ln 1897, a British doctor stationed in lndia discovered that
malaria parasites were passed from person to person by mosquitoes. [d)•
1
Today, medical researchers have made several developments in controlling the spread of
malaria. For one, doctors now have access to a wide array of effective medicines for treating
malaria, and many of these can be taken to prevent the disease or even build up a partia!
immunity to it. Furthermore, scientists have developed pesticides to kill mosquitoes and thus
prevent the spread of malaria. Additionally, in some places, controlling malaria is achieved
through non-medicinal methods, such as the use of mosquito nets that are constructed
from fine mesh cloth. Toe nets are typically placed over beds in order to protect people from
mosquito bites while they sleep.
• Despite these advancements in treating and preventing malaria, the disease is still a
nausea: the condition of worldwide problem. Because mosquitoes and the malaria parasite are living beings, they
feeling sick and that you can develop resistance to the medicines and pesticides used to kill them. [a]• Medical

History of the Mediterranean Sea

I
lhe Mediterranean Sea spans 2.5 million square kilometers and is almost entirely
surrounded by Europe, Africa, and northwestern Asia. Despite its size, a number of
geological discoveries suggest that lhe Mediterranean may have entirely dried up about tive
million to 12 million years ago. For one, during lhe l 970s, geologists discovered reflective
materiais at lhe bottom of lhe sea by using a specially designed ship and drilling system to
take core samples of the Mediterranean's seabed that were about 30 feet long. [a J • lhese
samples revealed lhat lhe reflective layer was composed of minerais left behind by evaporated
seawater. [bJ • Geologists also found other materiais lhat were unlikely to exist at the
bottom of a sea. [eJ • For example, lhey found a layer of anhydrite, a mineral that undergoes
a chernical transformation when it comes into contact wilh water. [d]•
2
Based on the deplh of lhe Iayers of non-oceanic materiais at lhe bottom of lhe sea, many
scientists argue lhat evaporation was caused by the Mediterranean becorning separated from
lhe Atlantic Ocean. Currently, lhe Mediterranean is connected to lhe Atlantic at a narrow
point, about 8.9 miles wide, called the Strait of Gibraltar. lhe connection between lhe two
bodies of water is important because the Mediterranean Sea has a negative moisture balance.
[a J • Because of its negative moisture balance, it's likely that lhe Mediterranean Sea would
dry up in about 1,500 years wilhout extra water from the Atlantic Ocean pouring in through
lhe strait [b J • Researcbers speculate that several million years ago, a geological event
caused the Strait of Gibraltar to dose, cutting off the Mediterranean from its water source.
[c]• Completely separated from the Atlantic, geologists claim that lhe Mediterranean dried
up in as little as 1,000 years. [d)•
3 lhe evaporation of the Mediterranean had signiticant etfects locally and globally.
Emptied of water, the region became a vast desert. Jt's believed that when the Mediterranean
Sea dried up, the water levei of the oceans around the world increased by up to 32 feet.
Furthermore, a large part of the salt from lhe world's oceans was stored in lhe dry seabed
lhis led not only to decreased salinity in the world's oceans, but also to a hyp ersaline, or
extremely salty, environment in the Mediterranean desert. Because many animais cannot

evaporate: to change
. survive in hypersaline conditions, it's likely that many of lhe species that once lived in the
area probably died, resulting in a severe decline in the biodiversity of the area.
4 However, this desert eventually became a sea again. About tive million years ago,
from a liquid state to a gas geologists lheorize that a major geological event opened the dam between the Atlantic and
the Mediterranean, causing an enormous waterfall to flood the Mediterranean basin, refilling
salinlty: the amount of
salt in something it in only l 00 years. Such a sudden influx of water would wash away any life growing in the
Mediterranean desert and atfect the climate of the surrounding regions.

Detection of Extrasolar Planets

1 An extrasolar planei is a planei that is located outside of Earth's solar system. [ a J • Like the
planets in our solar system, which orbit around the sun, extrasolar planeis follow the path around
stars in the galaxy. [b J • ln addition, these planeis may be able to provide information about astro-
nomical processes like star formation, which could help scientists understand the beginnings of our
own solar system. [ e J • However, beca use they are located outside of the solar system, extrasolar
planeis are very difficult to detect. Toe task of discovering extrasolar planeis is further complicated
by the fact that, as mature planets, they do not have their own light source, and the intense light from
the stars that they orbit usually obscures them. [d]• Despite these difficulties, scientists have
devised severa! methods for detecting extrasolar planeis.
2 Toe primary methods for locating extrasolar planets are indirect, meaning that they involve
taking measurements from objects other than extrasolar planets themselves. For exarnple, the radial
velocity method involves calculating changes in a star's movement in response to the extrasolar
planets orbiting around it. When an extrasolar planei orbits a star, it changes the star's velocity, or the
speed at which the star traveis. lnstruments on Earth that measure the movement of starlight through
space can detect changes in a star's velocity from billions oflight-years away. [a] • By calculating
these changes for faraway stars, scientists can determine if there are any extrasolar planets orbiting
around them. [b]
• Furthermore, this method provides researchers with information about the mass ofthe extrasolar
planeis that are causing the velocity changes. [e]• Typically, extrasolar planets that are discovered using
this method are very large. [d]• However, researchers are in the process ofrefining this method in
order to be able to detect smaller planets as well.
l Toe radial velocity method provides information about the mass ofan extrasolar planet, but by

using another indirect detection technique called the transit method, scientists can gather other kinds
ofinformation about an extrasolar planet's siz.e. [a]• Most importantly, the transit method helps
observers to determine an extrasolar planet's radius, which is the distance from the center ofa planet to
its surface. [bl • When a planei comes between a star and the instruments used to observe it, the star's
light is momentarily dimmed. [e]• Thus, by measuring the star's light output, scientists can determine
ifan extrasolar planet has traveled between that star and their telescopes. [d]• Scientists using this
method pay attention not only to the intensity ofthe star's light output, but to the frequency ofany
changes in output as welL By using this information, along with the size ofthe shadow that an extrasolar
planet casts as it passes in front ofa star, scientists are able to figure out a planet's size. Planets with a
larger radius cause the light ofa star to dim more significantly than it would with smaller planets.
• ln addition to these indirect methods, researchers are developing new technology intended to make
it easier to obtain images ofextrasolar planets directly. They are making advancements toward creating
instruments that are capable offiltering out the glare ofa star's light and producing extremely clear
images that allow scientists to distinguish extrasolar planeis from the stars they orbit. Some scientists

are researching the possibility ofadapting the coronagraph, which is a telescope originally used to block
light·year: the distance out our sun's light in order to study the fainter light surrounding it. [a]• With some modifications,
that light traveis in a year
the coronagraph's ability to block out large amounts oflight may make it useful for detecting extrasolar
ot1>1t to move around planets. [b]• Unlike ordinary telescopes, an interferometer uses a system of severa! mirrors and
a sun or moon in a gathers irnages from many clilferent angles. [e]• By combining the muJtiple images, the relatively dim
continuous curving path
light of extrasolar planeis is intensified and is therefore more apparent to scientists. [d]•
