International standard ISO 14644-1 replaced Federal Standard 209E. November 2001. The table to the right depicts the ISO
cleanroom classifications for the appropriate particle size.

The table to the left shows the cleanliness class comparison between the ISO regulation and defunct Federal Standard 209E.
Note that there are three new cleanroom classifications under ISO. ISO Classes 1 and 2 were added to serve the
microelettronics industry. ISO Class 9 is useful for the pharmaceutical industry, specifically for areas were powders are
handled. Also note that the table is a close approximation. The maximum number of particles per cubic meter in the new ISO
classes differs slightly to the maximum number allowed in Federal Standard 209E.
