(b) Where will you provide comer reinforcements in slabs and why? Describe the
corner reinforcement requirements according to ACI Code with the help of neat

(c) Determine the nominal and design axial compression capacity of a 20"x25" column

reinforced with 4 - #9 and 8 - #8 bars. (9X)

2. (a) Why is the value of strength reduction factor lower for RC columns compared to

(c) Design a square tied column to support an axial dead load of 900 kips and a live
load of 500 kips. Use, I: = 5 ksi, Iy = 60 ksi and a steel ratio of about 2%. Design the

3. A five-storied building consists of 6" thick floor slabs. The typical floor plan is shown
in Figure I.The rectangular floor slabs are supported by beams at all their edges. All
beams are 12" wide and 30" deep which are simply supported at their ends by columns
of cross-section 36"x36" at the corners. Determine the concentrated factored load on

column CI at the plinth level for gravity loads. (23X)


Assume, FF = 30 psf, PW = 40 psf, and LL = 60 psf, floor height = 10'.

4. A four-storied shear wall is subjected to factored wind forces as shown in Figure 2.


The wall is 16' long and 8" thick. Design reinforcement for the wall. Assume the

compressive strength of concrete to be 4 ksi and steel yield strength to be 60 ksi. (23 X )

6. A reinforced one way concrete slab is built integrally with its supports and consists of
two equal spans, each with a clear span of 14 ft. The service live load is 100 psf, and
4000 psi concrete is specified for use with steel with a yield strength equal to 60 ksi.
Design the slab following the provisions of the ACT. (Use the table provided in

Appendix-A) (23X)

7. (a) Find the cross sectional and steel area required for a simply supported rectangular
beam with a span of IS ft that is to carry a computed dead load of 1.3 kips/ft and a

3. A cantilever beam is shown in Figure 2. If it carries an upward concentrated load of


3000 Ib at the free end, determine the maximum bending stresses at a section 5 feet from

the free end. Assume the weight of the beam is 60 Ib/ft. (14)

4. Detemline the shearing stresses at the levels indicated of the I beam given in Figure 3.

5. The simply-supported beam cross-section shown in Figure 4 is a composite beam where


the upper 5" x 10" is made up of wood and the bottom 0.5" x 5" strap is made of steel. If
this beam is subjected to an uniformly distributed load of 600 Ib/ft, what are the
maximum stresses in the wood and steel? Neglect the weight of the beam and assume

1. Calculate the maximum bending stresses (positive and negative) of the beam shown in

Fig. 1. (14)

2. Determine the allowable bending moment around horizontal neutral axes for the
composite beams wood and steel plates having the cross-sectional dimensions shown in

Fig. 2. Materials are fastened so that they act as a unit. Given Est = 30 x 10 psi and

Ew = 1.2 x 10 psi. The allowable bending stresses are O"st= 20 ksi and o"w = 1.2 ksi. (14)

3. Determine the maximum stress in the concrete and the steel for a reinforced-concrete
beam with the section shown in Fig. 3 if it is subjected to positive bending moment of
80,000 lb-ft. The reinforcement consists of three #8 steel bars (these bars are 1 inch in

diameter). Assume the ratio ofE of steel to that of concrete be 10. (14)

4. The beam of Fig. 4 is made of four wooden planks which are nailed to each other. If the
beam has to carry a maximum vertical shear of 2500 lbs and shear capacity of a single

nail is 250 lbs, determine the spacing of the nails with a factor of safety of2. (14)

5. Draw the shear stress distribution diagram of the beam shown in Fig. 5 at a section 5 ft

from the left support. (14)

6. Determine the equation of the elastic curve (deflection) for the beam shown in Fig. 6.

Also calculate the deflection at mid span. (14)

7. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram of the beam shown in fig. 7. (14)

8. State of stresses for an element is shown in Fig. 8. Calculate the normal and shear stresses

on plane AB. (14)

9. Using Mohr's circle of stresses, for the element shown in Fig. 8, (14)
(a) find the principal stresses and show their direction on properly oriented element,
(b) find the maximum shear stress and associated normal stresses, if any. Show their
proper orientation.

10. Determine the capacity of the column of 24 ft height shown in Fig. 9. The column is
braced at mid height to resist its deflection in the y-direction. Use A36 steel having

CYyp = 36 ksi and E = 29 x 103 ksi. (14)

11. Determine the allowable axial load of a 12 ft long steel column of W 8 x 67 section (A =

19.7 in , rxx = 3.71 in and ryy = 2.12 in. The column is fixed at one end and pin-connected

at the other. Use A36 steel having CYyp = 36 ksi and E = 29 x 103 ksi. Use AISC/ASD

12. Using the moment-area method, determine the deflection of the beam at the middle span

as shown in Fig. 10. EI is constant. (14)

13. Using the moment-area method, determine the deflection and slope of the elastic curve at
point A due to the applied load for the beam as shown in Fig. 11. Specify the direction of

SECTION-A
There are SEVEN questions in this section. Answer any FIVE.

1. Draw bending stress distribution diagram of the beam of Fig. 1 at support. (14)

2. Calculate the elastic moment capacity and plastic moment capacity of the T-section of

Fig. 2. Also calculate shape factor. Fy = 36 ksi. (14)

3. Draw the shear stress distribution diagram of the T-section of Fig.1- which is subjected to

a vertical shear of 25 kip. (14)

4. A I-section of a beam is made of three wooden planks which are nailed to each other as
shown in Fig. 3. This beam has to carry maximum vertical shear of 700 lb and nail
spacing is 1.5 inch, calculate the factor of safety of the nail joint, if capacity of a nail is
150 lb. (14)

5. A composite beam of wood and steel, as shown in Fig. 4, is subjected to a bending


moment of 100 kip-ft around its horizontal axis. Calculate the maximum stresses in steel

and wood. Ew= 1.5 x 106psi, Es = 30 x 10 psi. (14)

6. Calculate maximum deflection and maximum rotation of the beam of Fig. 5. Consider EI

constant.

8. Determine the equivalent state of stress on an element if the element is oriented 60°

clockwise from 'the element shown in Fig. 7. (14)

9. Using Mohr's circle of stresses, for the element shown in Fig. 7. (14)
(a) Find the principal stresses and show their directions on properly oriented element.
(b) Find the maximum shear stresses and associated normal stresses, if any. Show
their proper orientation.

10. Determine the reactions at the supports A and B. Then draw moment diagram. EI is
constant. (Fig. 8) (14)

11. Determine the displacement at point C for the steel overhanging beam shown in Fig. 9.
Use Es = 29000 ksi, I = 125 in4. (14)

12. The beam is subjected to the loading shown in Fig. 10. Determine the equation of the
elastic cmye and deflection at point D. EI is constant. (14)

13. The A-36 steel W8 x 31 member shown in Fig. 11 is to be used as a pin-connected


column. Determine the largest axial load it can support before it either begins to buckle or
the steel yields. (Given, A = 9.13 in2, Ix= 110 in4, Iy = 37.1 in4) (14)

14. Determine the capacity of a 15' long steel column of W8 x 67 section (A = 19.7 in2,

(xx = 3.71" and v'h = 2.l2"The column is fixed at one end and pin-connected at other end.

Use A-36 steel. Use AISC/ASD method. (14)
