II. INTRODUCTION
REFERENCES
In academics and scholarship, a reference or bibliographical reference is a piece of
information provided in a footnote or bibliography of a written work such as a book,
article, essay, report, oration or any other text type, specifying the written work of
another person used in the creation of that text.
When conducting research, it's essential to include references to support your arguments,
findings, or claims.
Examples of References
Academic Journals
Peer-reviewed academic journals are often considered the most reliable sources for research.
Examples include journals like Nature, Science, The New England Journal of Medicine, etc
Books
Depending on your topic, books can provide in-depth analysis and background information.
Look for books written by reputable authors and published by established publishers.
Government Publications
Government reports, white papers, and statistics can be authoritative sources of information,
particularly for topics related to public policy, economics, and social sciences.
Websites
While websites can be useful sources of information, be cautious about their credibility. Stick to
reputable sources such as government websites, academic institutions, and established
organizations.
WEBSITES
Google Scholar
Google Scholar is an excellent starting point for student research papers. It provides access to
scholarly articles, theses, books, conference papers, and more across various disciplines.
Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg offers over 60,000 free eBooks, including many classic literary works that are
in the public domain. It's a great resource for students studying literature and humanities.
Internet Archive
The Internet Archive is a digital library offering access to millions of free books, movies,
software, music, websites, and more. It's particularly useful for accessing historical documents
and primary sources.
TED-Ed
TED-Ed features educational videos on a wide range of topics, including science, technology,
philosophy, and psychology. It can be a valuable source of inspiration and insight for student
research papers.
Educational Websites
Websites such as Khan Academy, Coursera, edX, and MIT OpenCourseWare offer free or
low-cost educational resources, courses, and materials that can supplement your research and
understanding of various subjects.
Now that you have already identified the References and Websites in conducting a
Research, let’s now move on to the Citation Style that is being used in citing a Reference which
is the APA style.
APA STYLE/FORMAT
The APA Style was created by the American Psychological Association with the intention of
providing social scientists like psychologists and anthropologists with a standardized way to
attribute sources.

In-text Citations
Direct Quotation
Quoting is copying a selection from someone else's work, phrasing it exactly it was
originally written. When quoting place quotation marks (" ") around the selected
passage to show where the quote begins and where it ends. Make sure to include an
in-text citation.
Always Indicates Author’s Last name and Publication Year no matter the source
type.

PARENTHETICAL CITATION
NARRATIVE CITATION
Parenthetical Citation
It is a citation system in which in-text citations are made using parenthesis.
Example:
There is a positive correlation between social media usage and anxiety symptoms in Teenagers
(Parker, 2019)
Narrative Citation
It incorporates the author's names and/or the publication year into the sentence.
Example:
Parker, (2019) found a positive correlation between social media usage and anxiety symptoms
in Teenagers.
Place the

Paraphrasing
It is used to show that you understand what the author wrote. You must reword the
passage, expressing the ideas in your own words, and not just change a few words
here and there. Make sure to also include an in-text citation.
Example:
According to Dalisay, (2021) our lives can be considered as gold.
Gold as we consider our lives (Dalisay, 2021)
