facTEST 1A

PART 1: Social Interaction (3 mins)

Let's talk about daily routine.
1. Are you an early bird or a night owl?
2. What part of your day do you like best?
3. What is your favorite way to relax?
Let's talk about challenges and obstacles.
1. Have you ever faced an obstacle or challenge?
2. If yes, describe it and what did you do to overcome it?
3 . If not yet, would you try to overcome a challenge yourself or tum to
someone for help? Why?
PART 2: Topic Development ( 5 mins)
Topic: Some people believe that schools should redesign their schedules to help
teenagers to sleep more. What is your opinion?
For: First and foremost, If teenagers get enough sleep, they are in better
moods and tend to perform better at school. When students are in a good
mood, students will have the energy to study lessons effectively, helping to
bring their better academic performance. On the contrary, people who do not get
enough sleep will feel tired, do not have the spirit to study, and will lead to
stress is the etiology (rối loạn) of some mental and psychological disorders
among adolescents( tuổi vị thành niên).
The second indispensable factor is that minimized Tardiness and Truancy(
Giảm thiểu việc đi trễ và trốn học). Exhausted students may skip school to
sleep more, but if altered school schedules allow them to sleep longer, they’d be
less likely to be truant or tardy. For example, A 2016 study looked at eight high
schools that delayed their school times from 7:20 am to 8:35 and 8:55 am. They
found a significant decrease in truancy and tardiness, with one of the schools
citing a 66 percent decrease in tardiness.
Against: If a school schedule was redesigned, the students might not be able
to learn enough useful knowledge. Knowledge in class will be more and more
according to the student's learning level. Therefore, if you enter the class
later
than the usual time, it will make it impossible for teachers to impart all the

knowledge of the lesson that day, leading to slow progress and students having
to spend a long time at home studying the rest of the lesson on their own.
Parents’ Work Schedules
A later school schedule clashes with the average parent’s work schedule, so
some parents might be unable to drop off their young children at school or stand
at the bus stop with them. If parents have older teens, their younger siblings are
left under their care, but then the teens themselves would have little help
starting their mornings and getting to school.
PART 3: Follow-up Discussion:
Suggested questions:
1. What are the advantages of getting enough sleep?
Improved Mental Function. Sleep is believed to help with memory and
cognitive thinking. Brain plasticity theory, a major theory on why humans sleep,
posits that sleep is necessary so the brain can grow, reorganize, restructure, and
Updating these connections
in the brain during sleep helps individuals learn new information and form
memories. Quality sleep leads to improved concentration and better problem-
solving and decision-making skills. In other words, a good night’s sleep can
increase productivity.
A lack of sleep can have a negative impact on the ability to think clearly, form
memories, learn well, and function optimally during the day. The ability to think
quickly slows down after only a week of insufficient sleep.
Secondly, getting enough sleep helps a healthy heart. Quality sleep promotes
cardiac health. During sleep, the heart rate slows down, and blood pressure
decreases. This means that during sleep, the heart and vascular system are able
to rest. However, insufficient sleep is a risk factor for unwanted cardiovascular
events. Lack of sleep causes blood pressure to remain high for an extended
period, increasing the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and heart failure.

2. Should there be laws to require some professionals such as drivers,

factory workers, or doctors-in-training to get a certain amount of sleep?
Why or why not?
I think it's really necessary to do it because special occupations like
doctors,
workers, or drivers not only have an effect on them but also on everyone around
them. If they are severely sleep deprived and work in an unconscious state, it
will lead to the patient falling into a dangerous state such as the disease will be
more dangerous or will be involved in an accident. Moreover, Lack of sleep
also affects mood: negative moods—such as anger, hostility, depression,
confusion, tension, and sadness—increase, while positive moods such as vigor
and happiness decrease. Such negative moods are bound to affect the quality of
patient care.

TEST 1B
PART 1: Social Interaction (3 mins)
Let's talk about health
. 1. Do you think you are healthy?
2. What do you often do to keep fit?
3. What are the advantages of regular exercise?
Let's talk about animals.
1. What animal is your favorite?
2. What animal do you think is the most intelligent?
3. In what way(s) could the animal demonstrate its intelligence?
PART 2: Topic Development ( 5 mins)
Topic: Some people believe that conducting scientific experiments on animals
should be banned. What is your opinion?
You can use the suggested prompts to take your side(s).
For: It is inhumane to use animals in scientific experiments. To use a
common example of this practice, laboratory mice may be given an illness so
that the effectiveness of a new drug can be measured. Opponents of such
research argue that humans have no right to subject animals to this kind of
trauma and that the lives of all creatures should be respected. They believe that

the benefits to humans do not justify the suffering caused and that scientists
should use alternative methods of research.
Against: Animals make a great contribution to medical advancement,
which helps to save millions of people. Animal testing is essential in the quest
to understand human diseases and to develop new treatments such as new
vaccines, and treatments for cancer, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, and HIV. In
the past, people had to put their hands on serious diseases. But nowadays,
thanks to animal experimentation, those diseases are solved and help people
have a better chance of survival.
The second indispensable factor is that study the effects of genetic diseases
and finds out how genes work. As a result, we can detect dangerous genetic
diseases such as knife disease to have appropriate prevention. At the same time,
it is possible to detect genetic mutations that cause cancers to help us have
timely treatments.
PART 3: Follow-up Discussion:
Suggested questions:
1. What do you think about the fact that many animals are raised as food
for humans?
Personally, I disagree with this assertion. First and foremost, we don’t need
to eat animals to survive. Unlike many other animals that kill for their food,
humans can survive on a completely plant-based diet. We’re not living in the
dark ages anymore. Our understanding has evolved and in the process, we have
come to learn that eating animals is no longer the necessity we once believed it
to be. Research has proven that plants contain all the vitamins and nutrients that
the human body needs to thrive.
Besides that, we are creating emotional pain and suffering for the animals.
The animals we slaughter for food are extremely intelligent and sensitive
creatures, and the way in which we treat them, regardless of whether the meat is
factory-farmed, free range or organic, is abhorrently cruel. From stealing their
babies from them at birth to keeping them locked in confinement and denying
them their natural behaviors, our actions cause animals immense emotional pain
and suffering.
4. Should we pass a stricter law to stop people from hunting wild animals?
In my point of view, I totally agree that a stricter law should be passed to
protect against wildlife hunting because wild animals, especially those on the
Red List, are in danger of extinction increasing every year. If wildlife
extinction continues, then humans may face an ecological crisis that impacts on

their own survival. For example, if the practice of whaling is not halted, the
ecosystems of our oceans will be altered forever, and this may affect fish stocks
on which so many communities depend for a living. Secondly, protecting wild
animals means protecting the habitats in which they live, such as rainforests
and wetlands. If habitat destruction is permitted, climate change will affect our
capacity to produce food to sustain the growing human population.
TEST 1C

PART 1: Social Interaction (3 mins)

Let's talk about studying.
1. What is your favorite subject at university?
2. How much time do you spend doing your homework a day?
3. What extracurricular activities do you often participate in?
Let's talk about ability and talent.
1. Do you have any special ability or talent?
2. If yes, what talent is it? How much time do you spend on practicing it?
3. If no, what talent or skill do you wish/want to have?
PART 2: Topic Development ( 5 mins)
Topic: Some people believe that a young child with a special talent should be
allowed to develop as naturally as other children. What is your opinion?
You can use the suggested prompts to take your side(s).
For: Children should be developed well if they spend time with other
children playing outside and doing other activities. Obviously, if they
develop naturally, mentally and physically, they will be comfortable, thereby
helping their talents develop in a better way. Besides, they will be mingled with
the children and do not find themselves isolated making them feel like a strange
creatures. In contrast, if trained in a special environment, they will be
pressured both mentally and physically because of their rigorous training and
compared to people with the same genius abilities. The childhood of these
children will be lost and replaced by days of study and study.

Against: Research showed that a child can develop his or her special abilities up
to a certain age (e.g.' four or five). If trained in an environment like other
children, they will get bored because that knowledge is too easy and boring for
them.
PART 3: Follow-up Discussion:
Suggested questions:
1. Do you think a genius or a talented person is innate (born with that special
talent) or leam a talent in somehow?
2. Should the parents of a talented child push him/her to develop that talent?
Whv or why not?

TEST lD
PART 1: Social Interaction (3 mins)
Let's talk about daily routine.
1. Do you get enough sleep? How many hours do you spend sleeping?
2. Do you think you are living in a healthy life? Why or why not?
3. What do you often you to enjoy your life?
Let's talk about charity or volunteer work.
1. Have you ever participated in volunteer work or a charity activity?
2. If yes, what work/activity was it? What did you do? When did it take place?
3. If not yet, do you plan to participate in volunteer work this summer?
PART 2: Topic Development ( 5 mins)
Topic: Some people believe that high schools should require community service
in order for students to graduate. What is your opinion?
You can use the suggested prompts to take your side(s).
For: High school students should learn to be good citizens by doing something
beneficial to their community.
First and foremost, participating in these non-salaried activities will
absolutely present more opportunities for students to better improve their
interpersonal and social skills. Through social activities with various people,
students can enhance their confidence in communicating and socializing with
others from different classes and those who have the same interest. Obviously,
high school pupils encounter several unanticipated problems and situations
when doing social services which require them to be really flexible to deal with.
As a result, students’ problem-solving skill and interacting skills will be better
thanks to these hands-on experiences.
Besides, imparting(truyen thu) education without enhancing other values
such as voluntary activities will make the student self-centers and dull.
Helping the needy and serving the people who are in need makes the student
aware of the reality of certain sections of the social aspect.
Against: First and foremost, It would be too much work for high school
students to spend time on community service because they have been
overloaded with their studying. For example, in India, most of the schools
have added more subjects recently in the curriculum of high schools. Besides, if
they are to perform such community activities, they would definitely face
challenges in the academic area and sometimes, they may fail in the
examinations.
Moreover, during this period of time, most of the students are not mature
enough. Since they are not capable of handling service programs effectively,
they may feel difficulties and dissatisfaction while implementing such activities
among others. In addition, it would develop a negative attitude towards unpaid
community services from the tender age. Consequently, they may lose interest
in doing those kinds of services later on.

PART 3: Follow-up Discussion:

Suggested questions:

1 . Should everyone help others? Wh or why not?

We should always help people in need. We have been sent to this world to do
good to others. If we are good and kind towards others, people will respect us
for our kindness. Being kind and helpful keeps us happy from within. We feel
happiness when we bring smiles to the face of others. We earn their good
wishes and blessings in return. It makes us a good human being. To help others
is the greatest motto of humanity and we should adhere to it.

Helping others can help you live longer

Regular volunteering can improve your ability to manage stress and stave off
disease as well as increase your sense of life satisfaction. This might be because
volunteering alleviates loneliness and enhances our social lives.
It will give you a sense of renewal
Helping others can teach you to help yourself. If you’ve been through a tough
experience or just have a case of the blues, the "activism cure" is a
great way get
back to feeling like yourself.
2. What are the benefits and drawbacks of volunteering to university
students? ( answer the same part 2)
TEST lE
PART 1: Social Interaction (3 mins)
Let's talk about entertainment.
1. Do you regularly play video or online games?
2. If yes, how much time do you spend playing? In what ways does the game
interest you?
3. If not, would you like to play if you have free time? Why or why not?
Let's talk about family.
1. Who are your grandparents living with?
2. How often do you visit them?
3. What activities do your grandparents often do?
PART 2: Topic Development ( 5 mins)
Topic: Some people believe that when the elderly are not able to look after
themselves, it is better for them to live in a nursing home. What is your opinion?
You can use the suggested prompts to take your side(s)
For: The elderly are well taken care of by professional nurses and doctors
in a nursing home. Staying in an elderly rehabilitation center ensures the
healthy survival of seniors. Most of the old homes have trained caregivers and
amenities, such as basic medicine and medical equipment; these facilities help

the older to have the necessary care. Besides, they will be along with other
senior citizens, which means, they will have mates to share their thoughts with
and pass their time with enjoyment. Thus, living in old homes could be
enjoyable. For example, a survey conducted by WHO reveals that the rate of
falling ill is minimum among those seniors who are staying in nursing houses.
Against: The elderly need to be loved and taken good care of by their
children and grandchildren. Accompanying family promotes the happy living
of the elders. In an older stage of life, people have limited physical capabilities
and adverse health conditions. Moreover, they might have poor mental
strengths because of their retirement from work and fear of death. In these
circumstances, if they are with their beloved ones, that will give them the sense
that they are not alone and have someone to care for them, which will provide
them with the confidence to survive cheerfully. For instance, it has been seen
that most grandparents enjoy supremely when they are surrounded by their
grandchild.
PART 3: Follow-up Discussion:
Suggested questions:
1. What problems may there be if elderly live with his or her son's or
daughter's family?
Naturally, it will have various problems even in the way of daily life and
lifestyle. First, elderly parents will go to bed very early at 9 pm instead of the
younger generation in the family is usually busy with work they'll go to
bed
later. Even in the way of dressing, older people always think to dress modestly
while society is growing younger generations tend to dress comfortably.
2. Do you agree that those who are 60 years old or so experience the golden
years of their life? Why or why not?
I don't entirely agree with this assertion. First, it will absolutely be golden
years
for salaried public servants in old age. Conversely, if people don't have a
pension in their old age, they will still have to worry about their daily money.
Apparently, at this age, their health is already very weak and they can only do
light jobs and earn little money. Moreover, the money for medical treatment
makes them unaffordable.

PART 3: Follow-up Discussion (2 mins)
1. What kind of homework should be assigned to university students?
Each type of homework has its own role in students learning. The important
task for teachers is to select homework that will best provide holistic support to
a student. This doesn’t mean just supporting students for the upcoming exams
but also ensuring students are not overwhelmed by homework and that they can
still live a balanced life outside of school. Application homework involves
taking knowledge learned in class and applying it to real-world settings. The
benefit of application homework is that it gives real-world context to what was
learned in class. By applying your knowledge, you can more effectively commit
it to memory than simply rote learning it
