Symptom

This note provides information about how to calculate the virtual memory and
page file size, which is required for the various SAP system instances and
components.

Other Terms

CreateOsShm, CreateFileMapping, 1455, the paging file is too small for this
operation to complete, pagefile

Reason and Prerequisites

The virtual memory and page file size required for your SAP system depends on
the available RAM of the host. It varies according to the number of SAP
instances you install on your host.

Solution

For more information about how to calculate the virtual memory and page file
size, see the following document, which is available at:
https://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-41587.
The document provides a general overview of the SAP system components and
instances, third-party software, backup tools, and the virtual memory and page
file size they need. It also provides examples for the virtual memory and page
file size that is required for a central (standard), distributed, or high-
availability SAP system.

Attached to this note you find an Excel sheet to calculate the page file of an
SAP standard configuration.

Important!

The excel sheet will just provide the MINIMUM virtual memory configuration to
START an SAP system! Based on the ammount of concurrent users, objects, batch
jobs, ABAP reports and other load relevant parameters, the real virtual memory
consumption in production is higher. In most cases, much higher!
