Time Management
Time management is organizing and setting aside time for different activities.
Time management is a needed skill to survive in college. It is crucial for making sure
you have enough time for things such as assignments, tests/quizzes, studying, and
even things such as activities on campus. Using your time more efficiently can benefit
greatly in your grades and could lead to being more productive. Some ways to achieve
this are by making a monthly calendar, making a weekly priority list, making a semester
plan, setting a study time, and using the 8-8-8 rule.
The first method is by making a monthly calendar. A monthly calendar will help
you set out important dates for the month ahead. A good way to do this is by getting a
year calendar and at the start of each month going through important events and writing
them in the calendar. Some dates to put on are tests, quizzes, projects, and social
events. This allows for structure and being able to see important dates that are coming
up.
The second method you can use is making a weekly priority list. At the start of
each week, you can make a list for the week ahead. This can include both short term
and long term assignments or projects. You can also write what you need to work on for
each class during the week. This can include studying, reviewing material, or re reading
chapters. A weekly priority list also helps break down big projects into more
manageable pieces.
Another method is by making a semester plan. By making a semester plan, you
can manage how you use all the hours during the week and use your time more
effectively. A semester plan is a detailed weekly schedule of activities. It breaks down
activities such as studying, classes, homework, eating, sleeping, and recreational
activities. By breaking down each day and what you want to accomplish, it makes it
easier to manage your time and be more productive.
Setting a study time is another way to set good time management habits. This
allows for allotted time for studying for tests, quizzes, or just the class in general. Setting
study time for each day helps to be more prepared for classes. It also helps set a time
to be more prepared for classes, instead of just studying before a test or exam. Setting
study times can help you work on areas of the class that you are unsure about or need
to work on. When setting a study time, picking a place such as library or study room can
help improve focus with a quieter setting with no distractions.
Lastly, using the 8-8-8 rule when setting your time management schedule can
make it easier to allot time to each activity. The 8-8-8 rule divides the 24 hour day into 8
hour segments. It allows for 8 hours of school, 8 hours of sleep, and 8 hours for
recreational activities. By keeping this rule in mind, it can make setting up your time
management plans easier.
Using practices such as a monthly calendar, making a weekly priority list, making
a semester plan, setting a study time, and using the 8-8-8 rule can greatly help in
managing your time and create better habits..Once you set up a time schedule, you can
become a more productive and efficient student. By setting a schedule, you can look
critically at your methods and habits. Setting up a time schedule can help improve your
skills in the classroom. Skills such as taking notes, reading the textbook, and organizing
your materials can benefit greatly. Making lists can help greatly in staying organized and
saving time.
Going forward, I plan on improving my time management and study skills. In
highschool, I rarely studied. Going into college now, I need to work more on studying for
classes, even if there is no test coming up. One way I can prepare for this is by making
a weekly calendar to divide up my time. This can help me manage my time and be more
prepared for my classes.
