1. Draw a sketch of the following solids and find their volumes (in terms of p and also round off to the hundredths):

l) Oblique parallelepiped /pærәlɛlәˈpaɪpɛd/ of height 10 m whose base is a 2 m x 3 m rectangle. (Sol: 60 m3)
m) Oblique triangular prism with height 1 m, which base is an equilateral triangle with a base of 0.5 m.

n) Right pyramid which is 15 m high and whose base is a square with sides of 10 m. Also find its surface area.

o) Oblique pyramid knowing that its height is 20 cm and its base is an equilateral triangle with side 6 cm.

q) Right triangular prism of height 3 dm and whose base is an equilateral triangle with side 2 dm. Also find its

SECTION 6: Volume and surface area word problems

1. Estimate the volume and area of the Earth, knowing that its average radius
measures aproximately 6371 km. (Sol: V  1.0832x1012 km3; S  5.1006x108 km2)

2. Work out the volume of Kio Towers (see figure), knowing that its base is a
square with side measuring 35 m, and has a height of 114 m. (Sol: 139 650 m3)

3. The walls and ceiling of a rectangular room whose measurements are 12 m


long, 7 m broad and 3.5 m height are to be painted. Alongside this, it has two
doors each measuring 1 m by 2 m and three
windows each measuring 2 m by 2 m. a) How much
area is to be painted? (Tip: Draw a sketch). b)
Supposing that we have paint cans each covering 25
m2, how many cans do we need? (Sol: 159 m2; 7 cans)

4. Find the volume of a Rubik’s cube of side 8 cm. Also find the volume of one of its
pieces. (Sol: 512 cm3;  18.96 cm3)

5. The dimensions of a swimming pool are given in the diagram.

10. A water tank is designed in the shape of a cuboid with height 10 m and 4 000 m3
of water storage. Find the side of its square base. (Sol: 20 m)

11. The diameter of the base of a cylinder is equal to its height and its surface area is
169.56 m2. Work out its dimensions. (Sol: d=h=6 m)

12. A patient has an intravenous drip inserted into the arm, at a rate of 1 drop every
20 seconds. Supposing that the recipient is a cylindric bottle with a radius of 2 cm
and a height of 5 cm, and each drop is aproximately a sphere with diameter 6
mm, estimate how long does a bottle take. (Sol: @ 3h 5 min)

13. If the edge of a cube is increased by 1 cm its volume increases by 271 cm3. What will be the length of each
edge of the cube? (Tip: State a 3rd-degree equation) (Sol: 9 cm)

density is 5 g/cm3. Find its weight in g and tons, using scientific notation.
