Stat-X Calculation Program Instructions

This document provides instructions for using the Stat-X condensed aerosol fire suppression system calculation program. The program performs calculations to select devices that meet the required mass and density for enclosures based on defined fuel hazards, sizes, and openings. It checks for errors like excess leakage and non-compliance with minimum density requirements.

SYSTEM CALCULATION PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONS

The Stat-X condensed aerosol fire suppression system calculation program is a WINDOWS based
program that performs calculations in accordance with the design methodology described in the UL
listed Stat-X Fire Suppression Systems Design, Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Manual, Part
Number 19000.

The installer executable file is supplied on the Fireaway Inc. distributor resource CD and the Stat-
Xtranet (Distributor Extranet) link at www.statx.com under folder Calculation Program.
The installer program will load into the PC local disk (usually C:) in Program Files (x86) the Stat-X
program under directory Fireaway LLC. It should also create as a default in the directory My
Documents a subdirectory Stat-X Designer Files which will store saved session files and WORD
printable documents saved during each session. The user will be prompted to select the name of each
file. The installer executable file will also create a shortcut icon on the Desktop directory called Stat-X
Designer. Left clicking on the icon should start the program. On PCs, left clicking on the Start icon
normally on the left bottom side taskbar, All Programs, Fireaway LLC, and Stat-X Designer shortcut
will also start the program.

1. STARTING THE CALCULATION PROGRAM

Left click on Stat-X Designer program icon in Desktop. The following screen should appear.
2. STARTING A NEW PROJECT OR OPENING A PREVIOUS PROJECT

Left click on File. The pop-up Project Name will appear. Type in your desired project name. This will
become the file name of the program session should you choose to save this calculation for future
access. Once saved this project name will appear when you wish to access saved files by left clicking
File, Open, project name.
3. DEFINING A PROJECT

A pop-up window for the session project will appear. Select Unit of Measure in METER or select
FEET by clicking ▼. If this is your first time using this program, left click NEW and type in your name.
If you have used this program before, left click on ▼ and select your name. The name will appear in
the final report. Type in Reference # box your project reference number. This will appear in the final
report. The Save, Save as, Create Visual Report, Create Text File Report, and Print Report buttons
can be left clicked (or type letter) at any time during the session.

Save: Save this session under Project Name as filename in My Documents, Stat-X
Designer Files subdirectory
Save as: Save this session under a different project name
Create Visual Report: Open an on screen advance view of the project report
Create Text File Report: Create in the Stat-X Designer Files subdirectory the final report in WORD
Print Report: Print the final report on the default printer
4. DEFINING THE ENCLOSURE VOLUMES

Left click on Volumes tab on the tool bar at the top of the window. Left click on New button on the
bottom of the window to define a new enclosure. Separate design calculations will be performed on
each enclosure added to this window. All calculation summaries will be printed in the same final report.
The bill of quantities by Stat-X model type for each enclosure, and the total quantity by model type for
all enclosures in this session will be printed in the final report. Each enclosure, once calculation is
complete, can be edited in the future with the Edit button, or entirely deleted with the Delete button.
5. DEFINING ENCLOSURE DESIGN PARAMETERS

Left clicking New will create a new pop-up window. Type in the name for the enclosure. Click ▼ and
select the most significant fuel hazard in the enclosure indentified by qualified fire risk analysis. Based
on the fuel type, the program will apply the appropriate design density.
Class C fire hazards involve Class A combustible material or B flammable liquid fire hazards. Class C
electrical fires may occur in enclosures with light/medium hazard risk or high risk (stacked cable racks
or cluttered underfloor).
6. DEFINE ENCLOSURE SIZE

Left click Change Volume Dimensions button. Enter in Volume pop-up window the length, width, and
height of the enclosure, using Tab key after each entry. Please ensure that the tallest ceiling height of
the enclosure is entered. The program will use the K1 adjustment factor to increase density application
rate as a function of actual enclosure height. See design manual.
7. DEFINE EACH UNCLOSEABLE OPENING AREA

Left click Openings tab. All uncloseable opening areas must be defined. Once each opening is
defined, in the future the entry for the opening can be edited (Edit button), deleted (Delete button), or
duplicated (Duplicate button).
8. DEFINE OPENING AREA

Left click New. In new window New Opening, click ▼ to select location of the opening. For Wall types
a box will appear for Upper locations. Type in the percentage of the opening that is actually above the
mid-level of the enclosure. In the box for Opening Shapes click ▼ to select RECTANGULAR or
CIRCULAR. Type in appropriate boxes the Width and Height or Diameter parameters, using the Tab
key to jump to the next box. Click OK button when done. The program will calculate the K2 adjustment
factor. The K2 factor will increase the aerosol application density rate to compensate for leakage rate
from the enclosure. See design manual.

Warning: The program will check for excess leakage rate LR or leakage parameter LP values (see
design manual). The LR and LP box will turn yellow, and an Excess Leakage error
message will be listed in the Errors tab. The program will not permit you to select devices.
Remedy the design by eliminating or reduce leakage areas or contact Fireaway.
9. SELECT DEVICES

Left click on Device tab. Based on input in the Volume and Openings tabs, the adjusted Required
Mass and Density is determined for you. As designer you will manually select the quantity of available
Stat-X models to meet the Required Mass and Density. Based on your selection, the program will
calculate the total Selected Mass and Density. The program will calculate the difference between the
required and selected mass and density to inform you of the Remaining Mass and Density balance of
aerosol mass to be selected. The remaining amount should be zero. The Base Density is the
program minimum extinguishing density for the selected fuel hazard before adjustment by the Z-factors.
In all pop-up menus the Notes tab allows you to add notes that will be included in the final report if the
check box Include these notes in the report is clicked. Otherwise the notes will only appear in the
session file.
10. ERROR MESSAGES

For convenience the program will check for 2 types of errors: excess leakage or non-compliance to UL
listing requirements with regards to minimum density. The excess leakage error is considered critical to
performance and will not permit you to perform calculations. The application rate non-compliance is not
necessarily a critical error. The minimum design density for Stat-X aerosol applications may be
different for various applications. In marine applications, the marine approval agencies have tested and
approved Stat-X for lower design densities. Furthermore, some projects are not required to meet UL
listing densities (for example marine applications). This program will allow the user to ignore the
message and continue to select devices and to print the final report. The UL non-compliance message
may be printed in the final report.
11. COMPLETING THE PROJECT

Complete the distributor and customer information under the Distributor and Customer tabs.
Verify using the Create Visual Report that the information is acceptable and then create the final test
report or print it as described above. Click File and Exit to exit the calculation program.

The final report saved on the PC hard drive under Stat-X Designer Files under the Project Name will
automatically have the logo inserted. The WORD file is not protected and can be edited or
merged with another report.
