1.Why are the temperature zones also called heat zones?
Ans1: The different temperature zones are also called heat zones. The heat in each of these zones
depends on how far it is from the equator.
2.Desert areas have very few cities. Why is this?
Ans: Cities cannot flourish in deserts as it is hot and dry with hardly any rain. Plant life is scarce.
There are hardy plants, adapted to survive in the deserts.
3.Write one or two sentences about (a)desert plants and(b)coniferous trees.
Ans: (a) Desert plants: These are hardy plants, adapted with fleshy stems, thorny and tiny leaves,
long roots and strong seeds to survive in the hot and harsh environment of the desert.
(b) Coniferous trees: These are tall straight cone-bearing trees with needle-like leaves like pine and
fir so that the snow doesn’t stick to it.
4.Why is farming not possible in the frigid zone?
Ans . Northern Hemisphere: It is very difficult for plant life, as the ground is frozen almost
throughout the year.
Southern Hemisphere: It does not support plant life as land is either frozen or barren rock.
5.Explain why the number of bison in North America were greatly reduced?
Ans: After large areas of grasslands were converted into farmland as well as towns and cities for
people to live, animals, like the mighty bison of North America that lived there in thousands, were
reduced to very small numbers.
