ABSTRACT

A good abstract should be precise and honest, can stand alone,
uses no technical jargon, is brief and specific and cites no references. It
should consist of a maximum of 100 words. The quality of an abstract
will strongly influence the reviewer’s grading/evaluation to the paper.

Keywords: 5 – 7 words can be included as keywords, separate words
with a comma, arrange words alphabetically.

1. INTRODUCTION
The poor performance of students in mathematics has been a
cause of concern for many. Numerous experts proposed several solutions
to this problem, yet the problem persisted, believing that poor knowledge
in basic mathematics among students is the key root to the problem
(Gningue, Menil and Fuchs, 2014). One of these basic foundational
knowledge and skills is the integers, a necessary prerequisite skill to
solve equations. Therefore, students may struggle to solve questions that
require the calculation of integers if they are still uncertain about the
concept behind the sign rules of integers (Rubin, Marcelino, Mortel &
Lapinid, 2014).
In the Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) 2018
and 2022, the Philippines ranked second and sixth from the bottom,
respectively. Filipino students achieved an average score in Mathematical
Literacy that was significantly lower than the Organization for Economic
Co-operation and Development (OECD) (Department of Education, 2019,
PISA 2022). In another international test, the 2019 report of the Trends
in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the
Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM) Program 2019 Main
Regional Report revealed students obtained low scores that concludes
Philippines is falling behind in mathematics compared to other countries
(UNESCO Bangkok). From these international results, we can conclude
that there is a poor numeracy skills in the country and one of the
reasons is poor knowledge in basic mathematics which includes integers.
One problem that students are facing when dealing with integers is
that they are confused with signs and operations of the integers, which
make them struggle in computing the integers (Rubin, Marcelino, Mortel
& Lapinid, 2015). Mathematics teachers of public school in the
Philippines revealed that based on the result of the interview during the
home visitation and the result of the summative test, most of the grade 7
students have insufficient knowledge in some learning content and
competencies which are included in Number and Number Sense most
especially in adding integers (Ni Chong, Shahrill Asamoah & Latif, 2022).
This is the reason why the students are having a hard time learning or
understanding other related learning competencies in other branches of
mathematics in all grade levels.

However, in this increasingly digital era, gamified and tutorial-
based integration can be best fit to help learners learn in an interactive
and engaging way which can provide them strategies to retain
information better. Results showed in the study of Madsen and
Levasseur et al (2018) that gamification significantly increased students’
motivation, engagement, and academic performance in mathematics. It
was particularly effective in enhancing knowledge acquisition and
retention (Sailer et al. (2017). Specifically, the study of Ni Chong, Shahrill
Asamoah & Latif (2022) implemented a non-digital card game
significantly improved the performance of students in the operations of
integers. Additional approached is the tutorial-based class integration.
The study of Rong-Jyue Fang (2017) suggests that tutorial-based
integration can enhance learners mathematical learning. Results showed
in the study of Yu-Wei Lin et al. (2020) that learners who received
tutorial-based integration instruction had significantly higher
achievement scores compared to those who received traditional
instruction. Thus, gamified and tutorial-based integration is a great help
to learners in improving their academic performance in mathematics.
The results of the numeracy test administered by mathematics
teachers to Quirino General High School students indicate that non-STE
students in grade 7 performed poorly, specifically the grade 7 Rizal.
Thus, this study aims to integrate gamified and tutorial-based approach
and examine its effectiveness on learners’ academic performance in
addition of integers, which assumes that the learners improve their
solving abilities not only in integers but in related learning competencies
in other branches of mathematics.

Provide a sufficient background information. Convince your
readers that your work is important. Be brief, it is not a history lesson.

2. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Provide the general problem of your research. Include a brief
background (include your observation, how you came to the
identification of your problem, background of the pupils/students
involved as respondents)

3. INTERVENTION ACTIVITY
Describe your intervention (implementation process must be detailed,
how did you do it?). Include photos as part of documentation. Cite
relevant works and acknowledge sources.

4. DISCUSSION
The details included in this section include findings to the
objectives of the study. Include in your discussion how your results
relate to other studies/researches. Be sure to cite references.

5. CONCLUSIONS
Present global and specific conclusions in relation to the
objectives(is the intervention effective or not?).

7. LITERATURE CITED
Arrange your reference list in alphabetical order. Be sure to
include all references. Please avoid citing personal communications,
unpublished observations, and the like. As much as possible, use
refereed journal publications. Follow the APA format for listing
references. You should have at least 10 references(recent only-start
with studies dated 2013).

Other important matters:
1. Follow the font style, size and lay-out of this paper. Be consistent
throughout the manuscript.
2. Your paper should not exceed 10 pages.
3. Abbreviations should be defined on the first use in both abstract
and main text. Yet firmly established in the field do not need to be
defined.
