Chapter 1

Project title: Calling the Shots: A COVID-19 Vaccine Awareness

Project description
The Project aimed to spread awareness regarding the COVID-19 vaccines since there
are a lot of people who are unaware of the positive effects and side-effects of the
COVID-19 vaccines, the project will also encourage the Filipino people to get
vaccinated. The group's activities included a Webinar entitled “Calling the Shots” in
which the group invited healthcare professionals to talk about the COVID-19 vaccines.
Participants interacted and asked questions. Through these activities, people were able
to become more complacent and more informed with the COVID-19 vaccines.

Background of the project

Vaccines are made to save people's lives. In the midst of the pandemic that took the
world by surprise, different countries and organizations have started developing
COVID-19 vaccines. These vaccines work by training and preparing the body’s
immune system to fight and defend the body from the virus. After the body is
vaccinated and is exposed to those diseases, the body is immediately ready to help
the immune system in fighting the virus, to prevent illness. Incorporating this with the
current situation, there are already at least four (4) COVID Vaccines which were
evaluated by WHO that have met the necessary criteria for safety and efficacy, and
these are:

1. Sinovac
2. AstraZeneca
3. Pfizer
4. Moderna

Some COVID-19 vaccines require a second dose, since the first dose can
only create a weak response and is not enough to strengthen the immune system.
There are three vaccines authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in
emergency use, the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines that require two doses
and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that requires only one dose. After getting the
first dose, you will get the second dose depending on what vaccine you took, 21
days in Pfizer-BioNTech and 28 days in Moderna. This interval will help your body to
develop properly to generate a small immune response prior to the second dose. In
case you are wondering, having a different vaccine after your first is not advisable by
the experts.

According to WHO, side effects are very usual after getting any of the
COVID-19 vaccines, here are the following:
Body:
● Tiredness
● Headache
● Muscle pain
● Chills
● Fever
● Nausea

Arm where you got the shot:

● Pain
● Redness
● Swelling

Side effects after getting your second dose might be more intense and some
people might not experience side effects at all.

Due to the fast production of these vaccines, even before the vaccines were
released in the Philippines, there were a lot of talk, especially fake news, on the
internet saying that these vaccines do not work or are only going to make you sick.
WHO admittedly said that these vaccines are capable and have some side-effects
due to the fact that it has been developed in such a short amount of time.

Target Beneficiaries
● Senior Citizens
● Students
● People in the Age Bracket of 18-59 years old

Summary of the activity

We invited two (2) Professional Medical Workers to take part in our activity called:
Calling the Shots: A COVID-19 Vaccine Awareness Webinar. The two
Professional Medical Workers, Dr. Edge Salarda, and Nurse Escel Velasquez
answered all the frequently asked questions regarding the COVID Vaccines;
From the background of the COVID-19 vaccines, it’s effectiveness and its
side-effects, how long the vaccines will work, etc.
The aim of this activity is to clear the misconceptions regarding the said vaccines.
It also aims to inform the listeners of the advantages of being vaccinated.

The live webinar, Calling the Shots: A COVID-19 Vaccine Awareness, started at
2:00 PM on June 16, 2021. After the 5 minute timer, the host gave a little
introduction about the event and moved on to the opening prayer by Jamie Abad
and was followed by the national anthem. Next, the hosts introduced themselves
and to officially start, Jullianne Barairo gave her opening remarks for the event.
The first speaker, Nurse Escel P. Velasquez, tackled the background of the
vaccines and the different types of the COVID-19 vaccines. Moving on to the
second speaker, Dr. Edge Salarda discussed the effects and side-effects of the
COVID-19 vaccines, and why people need to be vaccinated. Afterwards, the
webinar had an open forum about the questions from the audience regarding the
COVID-19 vaccines, which both speakers answered. The event ended with a
closing remarks by Alyssa Cairo, but due to connection problems Jullianne
Barairo filled in the position, followed by the Lasallian hymn. The hosts thanked
everyone for joining the webinar and officially closed the event.

CONCLUSION:

Problems during project implementations are something that no one can avoid,
especially when doing it online. During the group’s project implementation of the
webinar one of the problems that the group encountered was having a hard time
looking for a credible speaker for the event due to lack of time. The proposed
solution is to have teamwork in the group so that it can help to easily find a speaker
or ask for help from other people. Next, is having less interaction with the
participants. It is because of the low engagement of the page that is why the
publication materials cannot reach a lot of people and results in having a less viewer.
The proposed solution is to ask for some help to like and share the publication
materials as well as the page. Next problem is that the webinar was lagging a lot,
and other members experienced technical difficulties because of the unstable
connections. The proposed solutions are to always prepare a backup plan and back
up the person to be the substitute in case the member assigned to a certain task
experienced them.
DOCUMENTATION:
REFLECTION:

When our group found out that there was something to be done with our subject
which is NSTP, our team immediately thought about the COVID-19 vaccine. We
chose this topic because there is a lot of false information about this vaccine and it
spread all over the social media. Also our group wanted to know what was right and
wrong in the information about the vaccination and being vaccinated. After our
meeting, we immediately looked for who was reliable for that topic. At first we had a
hard time finding who could be the guest speaker, but with the help of our leader
Julliane Erin, we found Ms. Escel Velasquez and Mr Edge Salarda. The two guest
speakers are reliable on this topic because they are registered nurses and
occupational health physicians and also they are the one who facilitates the
vaccination. Days later, the guest speaker started to discuss in our webinar about
what are the types of vaccines, why it is necessary to get a vaccine, why we should
get vaccinated, why vaccination is safe and important, how does a vaccine work,
how are vaccine developed and tested and the things that we should know about this
kind of topic. After the talk our group and the attendees of our webinar asked some
questions and the guest speaker answered the questions about the vaccine and took
note of their answers were not only based on their observation or comment, they
provided research and cited some sources about it.

Thanks to Ms. Escel Velasques and Mr. Edge Salarda, our group and others who
watched our webinar were clarified about the vaccine and realized that without the
vaccine, we are at risk of serious virus and it is only a best protection against this
COVID-19 infection, being vaccinated is one of the best ways you can do to protect
yourself, your family and other people to help stop the virus from spreading. Our
group has reasons to get vaccinated, first is to protect ourselves and to protect those
around us, because being vaccinated is not only protecting yourself it is also a way
of helping not just for yourself but also in the community. Second you are helping to
lessen the risk of the virus variants developing and last is the quicker you have the
vaccine, the quicker we can get back to normality. If you have a chance or been
invited for a vaccine, please do it. It is a big help to people around us and to our
community that wants to have a safe and normal lifestyle.
WHATS NEXT?

After successfully ending and meeting the goal of this project, Our group’s plan is to
continue to spread information regarding the benefits of getting vaccinated. After
posting three publication materials and conducting a webinar regarding covid
vaccines, there are still a lot of people that are uncertain whether or not to get
vaccinated as there are a lot of issues rising regarding people dying because of the
vaccines. Because of that, to help the people understand how the covid vaccine
works, our group is aiming to educate them regarding the said issues. We are still to
disseminate, as well as encourage people to read and watch our publication
materials and our webinar. We know as a group that convincing people to get
vaccinated is hard, but with the help of each and everyone, we know we can
accomplish this task.
