Continental Drift Hypothesis vs Seafloor Spreading
SEAFLOOR SPREADING- Represent the movement of the of the Earth's crust and sea-bed. The rock is
pushed out sideways making a sea bed wider. The study of sea-floor spreading is part of plate tectonics.
The scientist measured the amount of sea-floor spreading on the sea-bed. It occurs at the divergent
plate boundary between two oceanic plates. Sea-floor is formed at the ocean floor and it pushes old
rocks away from ridge. Then the old sea-floor outlying from the ridge is push back into mantle. Rocks are
younger at the mid-ocean ridge and the rocks far from the mid-ocean ridge are older. Harold Hammond
Hess of Princeton University and Robert Dietz of the United States suggested the theory that the
seafloor itself shifts and even takes the continents with as it extends from such a central rift axis. In the
1960s, San Diego's Naval Electronics Laboratory. The phenomenon is recognized today as tectonic
plates. In areas where two plates shift apart during the spread of the seafloor, new seafloor is
continually created at mid-ocean ridges.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT- describes how continents move over the surface of the Earth. Some scientists
think that all the continents have gradually moved apart from one large land mass, called PANGEA, by
continental drift. Continental drift is part of the study of plate tectonics. Alfred Wegener introduced the
idea independently and more thoroughly in 1912, but many dismissed his theory because of the absence
of any motive mechanism. To this mechanism, Arthur Holmes later suggested mantle convection. The
hypothesis of plate tectonics, which explains that the continents shift by moving on plates of the
lithosphere of the Earth, has since subsumed the principle of continental drift.
Therefore I believe in sea-floor spreading because of the fact the scientist prove it otherwise in
continental drift it didn't publish and most of scientist are against in continental drift
