Acts 20:28
THE INTRODUCTORY RITES 3
When the Entrance Chant is concluded, the Archbishop and the faithful, standing,
sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the Archbishop, facing the
people, says:

I n the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The people reply:

Amen.

Then the Archbishop, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:

Peace be with you.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.

The Archbishop invites the faithful, saying:

Brethren (brothers and sisters),

let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves
to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

A brief pause for silence follows. Then all recite together:

I confess to almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
4 And, striking their breast, they say:

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;

Then they continue:

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

The absolution by the Archbishop follows:

May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.

The people reply:

Amen.

KYRIE

The Kyrie, eleison (Lord, have mercy) invocations follow, unless they have just
occurred in a formula of the Penitential Act.

And all pray in silence with the Archbishop for a while.

Then the Archbishop, with hands extended, says the Collect prayer.

G od of all creation,
who were pleased to give the Bishop Saint Polycarp
a place in the company of the Martyrs,
grant, through his intercession,
that, sharing with him in the chalice of Christ,
we may rise through the Holy Spirit to eternal life.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

At the end of which the people acclaim:

Amen.
6 LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST READING Ephesians 2:19–22

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians

B rothers and sisters:

You are no longer strangers and sojourners,
but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones
and members of the household of God,
built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets,
with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.
Through him the whole structure is held together
and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord;
in him you also are being built together
into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:

The word of the Lord.

All reply:

Thanks be to God.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 117:1bc, 2 7

℟: Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.

Praise the Lord, all you nations;

glorify him, all you peoples!

℟: Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.

For steadfast is his kindness for us,

and the fidelity of the Lord endures forever.

℟: Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.

8 SECOND READING 1 Peter 5:1-4

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Peter

B eloved:
I exhort the presbyters among you,
as a fellow presbyter and witness to the sufferings of Christ
and one who has a share in the glory to be revealed.
Tend the flock of God in your midst,
overseeing it not by constraint but willingly,
as God would have it not for shameful profit but eagerly.
Do not lord it over those assigned to you,
but be examples to the flock.
And when the chief Shepherd is revealed,
you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:

The word of the Lord.

All reply:

Thanks be to God.
ALLELUIA John 20:29 9

℟: Alleluia, Alleluia!
You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord;
blessed are those who have not seen, but still believe!
℟: Alleluia, Alleluia!

Meanwhile, if incense is used, the Archbishop puts some into the thurible. After
this, the Deacon who is to proclaim the Gospel, bowing profoundly before the
Archbishop, asks for the blessing, saying in a low voice:

Your blessing, Father.

The Archbishop says in a low voice:

M ay the Lord be in your heart and on your lips,

that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well,
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, ✠ and of the Holy Spirit.

The Deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies:

Amen.

If, however, a Deacon is not present, the Archbishop, bowing before the altar, says
quietly:

C leanse my heart and my lips, almighty God,

that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel.
10 GOSPEL John 20:24–29

℣: The Lord be with you.

℟: And with your spirit.

℣: ✠ A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

℟: Glory to you, O Lord.

T homas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve,

was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
But Thomas said to them,
“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands
and put my finger into the nailmarks
and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
Now a week later his disciples were again inside
and Thomas was with them.
Jesus came, although the doors were locked,
and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands,
and bring your hand and put it into my side,
and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Archbishop, acclaims:

The Gospel of the Lord.

All reply:

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The deacon brings the Book of the Gospels to the Archbishop. The Archbishop
kisses the book and blesses the people with it.
RITE OF ORDINATION 11
After the reading of the Holy Gospel, the Rite of Ordination will take place. To
begin, the hymn Veni Creator Spiritus will be sung to invoke the Holy Spirit.

Veni Creator Spiritus, Accende lumen sensibus:

Mentes tuorum visita, Infunde amorem cordibus:
Imple superna gratia, Infirma nostri corporis
Quae tu creasti pectora. Virtute firmans perpeti.

Qui diceris Paraclitus, Hostem repellas longius,

Altissimi donum Dei, Pacemque dones protinus:
Fons vivus, ignis, caritas, Ductore sic te praevio,
Et spiritalis unctio. Vitemus omne noxium.

Tu septiformis munere, Per te sciamus da Patrem,

Digitus Paternae dexterae, Noscamus atque Filium;
Tu rite promissum Patris, Teque utriusque Spiritum
Sermone ditans guttura. Credamus omni tempore.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

After the Laying On of Hands, two deacons will hold an open Book of Gospels over
the head of each Bishop-elect until the end of the Prayer of Consecration.

The Archbishop stands, putting aside his miter, and extending his hands over the
Bishops-elect and begins the Prayer of Consecration.

G od and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Father of mercies and God of all consolation,
who dwell on high and look upon the lowly,
who know all things before they come to be,
and who laid down observances in your Church
through the word of your grace;

who from the beginning,

foreordained a nation of the just,
born of Abraham;

who established rulers and priests

and did not leave your sanctuary without ministers,
and who, from the foundation of the world,
were pleased to be glorified in those you have chosen;

Pour out now upon these chosen ones

that power which is from you,
the governing Spirit,
whom you gave to your beloved Son, Jesus Christ,
the Spirit whom he bestowed upon the holy Apostles,
who established the Church in each place
as your sanctuary for the glory
and unceasing praise of your name.
18 Grant, O Father,
knower of all hearts,
that these your servants,
whom you have chosen for the office of Bishop
may shepherd your holy flock.

Serving you night and day,

may they fulfil before you without reproach
the ministry of the High Priesthood,
so that, always gaining your favor,
they may offer up the gifts of your holy Church.

Grant that,
by the power of the Spirit of the High Priesthood,
they may have the power to forgive sins according to your command,
assign offices according to your decree,
and loose every bond according to the power
given by you to the Apostles.

May they please you by their meekness and purity of heart,

presenting a fragrant offering to you
through your Son Jesus Christ,
through whom glory and power and honor are yours
with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church,
now and for ever and ever.

All reply:

Amen.

Deacon:

Please be seated.

After the Prayer of Consecration, the deacons remove the Book of Gospels, which
they have been holding above the head of the new bishops.
ANOINTING OF THE HEAD 19
After the prayer is concluded, the Archbishop receives his miter and is seated.

One of the newly ordained bishops kneels in front of the Archbishop.

The Archbishop anoints the head of the new bishop as he says:

M ay God,
who has made you a sharer
of the High Priesthood of Christ himself,
pour out upon you the oil of mystical anointing
and make you fruitful with an abundance of spiritual blessings.

The next newly ordained bishop approaches the Archbishop in the same manner.

The Archbishop washes his hands at the lavabo.

HANDING OF THE BOOK OF GOSPELS

One of the newly ordained bishops kneels in front of the Archbishop.

The Archbishop presents the Book of the Gospels to the new bishop, saying:

R eceive the Gospel

and preach the word of God
with all patience and sound teaching.

THE EPISCOPAL INSIGNIAS

The Archbishop places the ring on the new bishop’s right ring finger, saying:

R eceive this ring, the seal of fidelity:

adorned with undefiled faith,
preserve unblemished the bride of God,
the holy Church.

The Archbishop silently places the zucchetto upon the head of the bishop.
20 The Archbishop places the miter on the head of the new bishop, saying:

R eceive the miter,

and may the splendor of holiness shine forth in you,
so that when the chief shepherd appears
you may deserve to receive from him
an unfading crown of glory.

The Archbishop gives the crosier to the new bishop, saying:

R eceive the crosier,

the sign of your pastoral office:
and keep watch over the whole flock
in which the Holy Spirit has placed you as Bishop
to govern the Church of God.

The next newly ordained bishop approaches the Archbishop in the same manner.

After all of this has been completed, all will stand.

SEATING OF THE NEW BISHOP

The Archbishop will invite the newly ordained bishops to take their place among
the college of bishops in the sanctuary.

KISS OF PEACE

The newly ordained bishops will receive the Kiss of Peace from the Archbishop
and the concelebrating bishops.

After the presentation of the staff and until the end of the ordination rite, Psalm
95 with its antiphon or some other suitable song may be sung. The singing
continues until all have exchanged the Kiss of Peace.
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST 21
The Archbishop, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it
slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:

B lessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we have received
the bread we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us the bread of life.

Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal.

If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Archbishop may speak these
words aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

Blessed be God forever.

The Deacon, or the Archbishop, pours wine and a little water into the chalice,
saying quietly:

By the mystery of this water and wine

may we come to share in the divinity of Christ
who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

The Archbishop then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar
with both hands, saying in a low voice:

B lessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we have received
the wine we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become our spiritual drink.

Then he places the chalice on the corporal.

22 If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Archbishop may speak these
words aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

Blessed be God forever.

After this, the Archbishop, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

With humble spirit and contrite heart

may we be accepted by you, O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your sight this day
be pleasing to you, Lord God.

If appropriate, he also incenses the offerings, the cross, and the altar. A Deacon or
other minister then incenses the Archbishop and the people.

Then the Archbishop, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying
quietly:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin.

Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining
his hands, he says:

Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters),

that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God,
the almighty Father.

The people rise and reply:

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands

for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good
and the good of all his holy Church.
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS 23
Then the Archbishop, with hands extended, says:

R eceive, O Lord, we ask, the offerings we bring

in commemoration of the holy Martyrs,
and grant that we, your servants,
maybe found steadfast in confessing your name.
Through Christ our Lord.

At the end of which the people acclaim:

Amen.

PREFACE OF PASTORS
The presence of Holy Pastors in the Church

℣: The Lord be with you.

℟: And with your spirit.

℣: Lift up your hearts.

℟: We lift them up to the Lord.

℣: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

℟: It is right and just.

I t is truly right and just,

our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

For, as on the festival of Saint N. you bid your Church rejoice,

so, too, you strengthen her by the example of his holy life,
teach her by his words of preaching,
and keep her safe in answer to his prayers.

And so, with the company of Angels and Saints,

we sing the hymn of your praise,
as without end we acclaim:
24 SANCTUS

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER III 25
The Archbishop, with hands extended, says:

Celebrant alone

Y ou are indeed Holy, O Lord,

and all you have created
rightly gives you praise,
for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
by the power and working of the Holy Spirit,
you give life to all things and make them holy,
and you never cease to gather a people to yourself,
so that from the rising of the sun to its setting
a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.

He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the offerings, says:

Celebrant with concelebrants

T herefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you:

by the same Spirit graciously make holy
these gifts we have brought to you for consecration,

He joins his hands and makes the Sign of the Cross once over the bread and the
chalice together, saying:

that they may become the Body and ✠ Blood

of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,

He joins his hands.

at whose command we celebrate these mysteries.

In the formulas that follow, the words of the Lord should be pronounced clearly
and distinctly, as the nature of these words requires.

For on the night he was betrayed

26 He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he himself took bread,

and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing,
broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.

T AKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT,

FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and
genuflects in adoration.

After this, he continues:

In a similar way, when supper was ended,

He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he took the chalice,

and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing,
and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.

T AKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,

FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in
adoration.
Then he says: 27
The mystery of faith.

And the people continue, acclaiming:

We proclaim your Death, O Lord,

and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.

Then the Archbishop, with hands extended, says:

T herefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial

of the saving Passion of your Son,
his wondrous Resurrection
and Ascension into heaven,
and as we look forward to his second coming,
we offer you in thanksgiving
this holy and living sacrifice.

Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church

and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death
you willed to reconcile us to yourself,
grant that we, who are nourished
by the Body and Blood of your Son
and filled with his Holy Spirit,
may become one body, one spirit in Christ.

One Concelebrant

May he make of us
an eternal offering to you,
so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect,
especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs,
and with all the Saints,
on whose constant intercession in your presence
we rely for unfailing help.
28 Archbishop Arcilla

May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation,

we pray, O Lord,
advance the peace and salvation of all the world.
Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity
your pilgrim Church on earth,
with your servant Francis our Pope
and Jose our Bishop,
Christopher our bishop on this platform,
Francisl Luis and Leonardo his auxiliaries,
I your unworthy servant,
who have been ordained today
as shepherds for the Church,
with the Order of Bishops, all the clergy,
and the entire people you have gained for your own.

Listen graciously to the prayers of this family,

whom you have summoned before you:
in your compassion, O merciful Father,
gather to yourself all your children
scattered throughout the world.
One Concelebrant

† To our departed brothers and sisters

and to all who were pleasing to you
at their passing from this life,
give kind admittance to your kingdom.
There we hope to enjoy for ever the fullness of your glory

He joins his hands.

through Christ our Lord,

through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. †
He takes the chalice and the paten with the host and, raising both, he says: 29

T HROUGH HIM, AND WITH HIM, AND IN HIM,

O GOD, ALMIGHTY FATHER,
IN THE UNITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT,
ALL GLORY AND HONOR IS YOURS,
FOR EVER AND EVER.

The people acclaim:

Amen.
30 COMMUNION RITE

After the chalice and paten have been set down, the Archbishop, with hands
joined, says:

A t the Savior’s command

and formed by divine teaching,
we dare to say:

He extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

With hands extended, the Archbishop continues alone:

D eliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,

graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

He joins his hands.

The people conclude the prayer, acclaiming: 31
For the kingdom,
the power and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

Then the Archbishop, with hands extended, says aloud:

L ord Jesus Christ,

who said to your Apostles:
Peace I leave you, my peace I give you,
look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace and unity
in accordance with your will.

He joins his hands.

who live and reign for ever and ever.

The people reply:

Amen.

The Archbishop, turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands,
adds:

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.

Then, if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Archbishop, adds:

Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

32 And all offer one another a sign, in keeping with local customs, that expresses
peace, communion, and charity. The Archbishop gives the sign of peace to a Deacon
or minister.

Then he takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in the
chalice, saying quietly:

May this mingling of the Body and Blood

of our Lord Jesus Christ
bring eternal life to us who receive it.

Meanwhile the following is sung or said:

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
grant us peace.

The invocation may even be repeated several times if the fraction is prolonged.
Only the final time, however, is grant us peace said.
Then the Archbishop, with hands joined, says quietly: 33
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
who, by the will of the Father
and the work of the Holy Spirit,
through your Death gave life to the world,
free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood,
from all my sins and from every evil;
keep me always faithful to your commandments,
and never let me be parted from you.

or:

May the receiving of your Body and Blood,

Lord Jesus Christ,
not bring me to judgment and condemnation,
but through your loving mercy
be for me protection in mind and body
and a healing remedy.

The Archbishop genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the
paten or above the chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:

B ehold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

And together with the people he adds once:

Lord, I am not worthy

that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.
34 The Archbishop, facing the altar, says quietly:

May the Body of Christ

keep me safe for eternal life.

And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ.

Then he takes the chalice and says quietly:

May the Blood of Christ

keep me safe for eternal life.

And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ.

After this, he takes the paten or ciborium and approaches the communicants. The
Archbishop raises a host slightly and shows it to each of the communicants, saying:

The Body of Christ.

The communicant replies:

Amen.

And receives Holy Communion.

While the Archbishop is receiving the Body of Christ, the Communion Chant
begins.

When the distribution of Communion is over, a Deacon or an acolyte purifies the

paten over the chalice and also the chalice itself.

While he carries out the purification, he says quietly:

What has passed our lips as food, O Lord,

may we possess in purity of heart,
that what has been given to us in time
may be our healing for eternity.
Then the Archbishop may return to the chair. If appropriate, a sacred silence may 35
be observed for a while, or a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may be
sung.
36 PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Then, standing at the altar or at the chair and facing the people, with hands joined,
the Archbishop says:

Let us pray.

All pray in silence with the Archbishop for a while, unless silence has just been
observed. Then the Archbishop, with hands extended, says:

G rant us, O Lord, we pray,

that, being nourished by the Bread of heaven
and made one Body in Christ,
we may never be separated from his love
and, after the example of Saint Polycarp,
may bravely overcome all things
for the sake of him who loved us.
Through Christ our Lord.
At the end of which the people acclaim:

Amen.

TE DEUM

At the conclusion of the prayer after communion, the hymn Te Deum is sung, or
another hymn similar to it, depending on local custom. Meanwhile the newly
ordained bishops, after taking the miter and pastoral staff, is led by two of the
consecrating bishops through the church, and he blesses the congregation.

MESSAGE OF THANKSGIVING

After the hymn, the new bishop/s may stand at the altar, or if he (they) is in his
own cathedral-church, at the cathedra, and address the people briefly.
THE CONCLUDING RITES 37
If they are necessary, any brief announcements to the people follow here.

Then the dismissal takes place. The Archbishop receives the miter and, extending
his hands, says:

℣: The Lord be with you.

℟: And with your spirit.

The Deacon or, in his absence, the Archbishop himself, says the invitation:

Bow down for the blessing.

The Archbishop imparts the following blessing, with hands extended over the
newly ordained Bishop:

℣: May the Lord bless you and keep you;

and as he has willed to set you as High Priests over his people,
so may he make you happy in this present life
and grant you a share in the happiness that is eternal.

℟: Amen.

℣: May God grant that the clergy and people

he has chosen to unite by his gracious help
be happily governed by his providence and your stewardship
for many years to come.

℟: Amen.

℣: May they obey God’s commandments,

freed from adversity, and may they abound in all that is good,
submitting in faith to your ministry,
so that they will enjoy peace and tranquility in the present age
and with you be found worthy
to share the company of the citizens of eternity

℟: Amen.
38 Then the Archbishop receives the pastoral staff, if he uses it, and says:

And may almighty God bless all of you, who are gathered here,
the Father, ✠ and the Son, ✠ and the Holy ✠ Spirit.

℟: Amen.

Then the Deacon, or the celebrant himself, with hands joined and facing the
people, says:

G o in peace,
Glorifying the Lord by your life.

The people reply:

Thanks be to God.

Then the Archbishop venerates the altar as usual with a kiss, as at the beginning.
After making a profound bow with the ministers, he withdraws.
