CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND LITERATURE REVIEW

Background of the Study

This research title describes a study that aims to understand the impact of social media on
the academic performance of early childhood students in public schools. The research
will likely involve collecting data on the academic performance of students. The study
may then analyze the relationship between social media use and academic performance,
and identify any patterns or trends that may reveal how social media is influencing the
academic success of early childhood students in public schools. Social media has pros
and cons on the academic performance of the students.

With the use of social media platforms in school, students get motivated and fostered to
learn. Educational videos on YouTube, easy access to e-books, online notes, and learning
via video calls are major aspects that contribute to educational development. Distance
learning is one of the best ways to learn from reputed organizations by being at any
location what social media has made possible. Another vital impact of social media is
boosting student academic performance and increasing their knowledge through data and
information gathering. When students are assigned projects in schools, they go through
several online platforms to collect information so as to find solutions to their
assignments. (Ajay Singh, 2023)

On the other hand, a study of Murtaza (2023) says that students who spend too much time
on social media may struggle with time management and become less productive in the
classroom. Students are easily distracted from their studies by constant alerts, endless
scrolling feeds, and the appeal of viral material.

Social Media platforms are a significant factor that is commencing to distress and
obstacle of mind. These days students tend to lose their concentrate from studying and
instead enjoy browsing on social media. All of this conveys to wastage of time without
getting anything from it. Students are often incapable of submitting their work in the
specified time frame because they are more concentrated on applying social media
platforms. With the extensive use of social media, students these days are varying more
on such platforms to gain information and knowledge instead of looking out for the same
in books, journals, or notes. Because it is straightforward to obtain data online, students’
Social Media on The Academic Performance

reading habits and their learning and research skills are diminishing.

Adoption of social media sites with slight carelessness can have mental and also physical
effects on one’s health. Students do not take their meals on time, do not take proper rest,
and continuously being on a phone or laptop can also have adverse effects on their eyes.
Such actions make students slow and unambitious to study or even go out and meet
people. It is advisable for parents and also schools to keep an eye on what their children
are doing when using the internet. Too much use of social media can have adverse effects
on students’ minds, and they may also be exposed to bad posture, eye strain, and physical
and mental stress. (Ajay Singh, 2023)

The dynamic interaction between social media and academic performance has significant
consequences for modern education. Balancing the benefits and drawbacks of social
media integration necessitates a planned approach that maximizes collaboration potential
while avoiding potential challenges. As education evolves in the digital age, it is essential
to recognize that social media does not directly harm academic performance. Instead, it is
a potent instrument that, when used wisely, can promote engagement, cooperation, and
personalized learning experiences. As a result, the quality assurance perspective for
incorporating social media into influencing students’ academic performance necessitates
a proactive and balanced strategy. Educators may help students harness the promise of
social media while accomplishing academic goals by understanding the dynamics at work
and supporting ethical usage. (Najeem Olawale Adelakun, 2023)

Literature Review

Early Childhood Students In Public Schools:

The early period of human life (first eight years) is important for
cognitive, emotional growth and physical development of child. During
these early years environment is considered to be a potent factor that
determines how the brain actually grows, whatever a child is taught and
whatever he/she learns from surroundings, shape personality grows
accordingly. Therefore, there is a need to make a strong foundation at the
beginning (during early years) for better growth and development of
cognitions, emotions and body because if foundation is strong enough
only then a sustainable building can be constructed.
Social Media on The Academic Performance

The concept of early education was given to the world by legendary

lady doctor of Italy Maria Montessori; her idea was based on extensive
research while handling mentally disabled children. Since then, her
concept has been taken over the traditional system of teaching for
effective teaching to preschoolers. (Nadia Nazir, Fauzia Khurshid, 2022)

Concept of Social Media

The term ‘‘social media’’ (SM) was first used in 1994

on a Tokyo online media environment, called Matisse.1
It was in these early days of the commercial Internet that the
first SM platforms were developed and launched. Over time,
both the number of SM platforms and the number of active
SM users have increased significantly, making it one of the
most important applications of the Internet.
With a similarly fast pace, businesses have moved their
marketing interests toward SM platforms. The presence of both
businesses and users on SM has further led to a shift in how
companies interact with their customers, who are additionally no
longer limited to a passive role in their relationship with a
company.2 Customers give feedback, ask questions, and expect
quick and customized answers to their specific problems. In
addition, customers post text, pictures, and videos. Managers
came to the understanding that the brand transition to SM ultimately involves a re-casting
of the customer relationship, where
the customer has become an ally or an enemy, not an audience.3
In research, SM is generally used as an umbrella term that
describes a variety of online platforms, including blogs, business networks, collaborative
projects, enterprise social networks (SN), forums, microblogs, photo sharing, products
review, social bookmarking, social gaming, SN, video sharing,
and virtual worlds.4 Given this broad spectrum of SM platforms, the applications of SM
are quite diverse and not limited
to sharing holiday snapshots or advertising and promotion. (Thomas Aichner, PhD,1

Media helps boost creative skills in students by permitting them to learn and later
execute the same by doing it themselves. Quite frequently, a student’s hidden
talent is revealed when he/she starts to take pictures and use online editing skills to
make it took aesthetically appealing. Plenty of students have interesting hobbies
that they post online via videos and photographers, which helps them realize their
potential for making it a career. Another vital impact of social media is boosting
student academic performance and increasing their knowledge through data and

Theoretical Framework
This study is anchored on Bandura's Social Learning Theory. Albert Bandura, a well-known
theorist of the social cognitive theory, conducted an experiment to prove how social
influences including the media have harmful effects on people, especially children.
According to his theory, children learn by observing models in media and all its forms.
Children will imitate and role play what they see, especially if the role model has prestige
and social influence. This influence can be both positive and negative. The use of
smartphones in early childhood can have a positive impact if used more wisely and under
strict supervision from parents, but can also produce negative impacts outside the strict
supervision of their parents. (Hartati M. Taufik A.[...]Andani L. Zuriah: Journal Pendidikan
Anak Usia Dini, 2021) In this study, it enables us to understand the impact of social media on
the academic performance of early childhood students in public schools. We believe that
Bandura's social learning theory as a framework can provide insights into the influence of
social media on children's academic performance, by considering how children learn from
their peers and how social media can facilitate social learning.

Statement of the Problem

In this study, a survey will be conducted that aims to examine the influence of social
media on the academic performance of early childhood students in public schools.
This study specifically looks to:
1. To examine the time spent on social media by the early childhood students.
2. To determine the social media sites that the students regularly visit.
3. To figure out the influence of the usage of students’ social media on the academic
performance of early childhood students.
4. To find out the pros and cons of social media influence on the academic
performance of early childhood students.

Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between the influence of social media on the
academic performance of early childhood.

Significance of the Study

The influence of social media on the academic performance of the early childhood
students in public schools
Background of the study. Social media is a rapidly growing phenomenon that has become
a central part of our daily lives. With over 4 billion regular users, it has become an
essential tool for communication, entertainment, and information. As social media
Social Media on The Academic Performance

platforms continue to grow, their impact on various aspects of society has become a topic
of great interest. Early childhood is a critical period of development for children, and
academic performance is essential for their future success. Despite the many benefits that
social media platforms can offer, such as access to a wealth of information and
opportunities for social interaction, there is also concern about the potential negative
effects on the academic performance of children. Research has shown that social media
can be a source of distraction for children, leading to decreased attention and motivation
for learning. Moreover, the frequent use of social media has been associated with higher
levels of anxiety, depression, and social comparison. These factors can negatively impact
academic performance and may even lead to academic failure in some cases. Given the
widespread use of social media among children and young people, it is important to
explore its potential impact on their academic performance. This study aims to examine
the influence of social media on the academic performance of early childhood students in
public schools. In particular, the study will explore the frequency and nature of social
media use, and its relationship with academic performance, after accounting for other
potential predictors such as demographic characteristics, family background, and
academic behaviors. The findings of this study will help inform the development of
strategies to promote the positive aspects of social media use and limit its negative effects
on academic performance.
