3. Dawn
4. Summer solstice , 21 June in the northern hemisphere and 22 December in the southern
hemisphere
5. When the sun is over head at a particular place it is mid-day in that place.
D. Answer the following briefly.
1. There would be no seasons if the axis of the Earth was not tilted.
2. The line of illumination separates the day from the night.
3. When the rays of the sun fall perpendicular on the Earth, we say that Sun is overhead.
4. Revolution causes seasons.
5. Effects of the revolution and the tilt of the Earths axis causes variation in the days and
nights.
E. Answer the following in detail.
1. Rotation of the earth causes day and night. It also causes intervening periods of dawn
and dusk. The tilt of the earths axis causes variations in the length of days and nights.
The anti-clock wise direction of rotation causes the Sun to rise in the east and set in the
west. It gives the Earth its geoid shape.
2. Revolution of the earth and the tilt of its axis causes seasons on the Earth like spring,
autumn, summer, winter. As the Earth travels around the Sun on its imaginary path, the
side leaning towards it keeps changing. When the northern hemisphere leans towards
the Sun it receives more light and heat, making it warmer.During the same time the
southern hemisphere which is tilted away from the Sun gets lesser amount of heat and
light making it colder. The result of this is that the northern hemisphere enjoys summer
and during the same time the southern hemisphere experience winter.
3. The term Solstice originates from two Latin words sol means Sun and sistece which
means to stand still. Summer solstice occur around 21 June in the Northern
Hemisphere and marks the longest day of the year. On this day , the Sun is over the
tropics ( Tropics of Cancer). On the same day the Southern Hemisphere experiences
winter solstice marking the shortest day of the year.
4. The term Equinox is derived from the Latin word Aequus which means equal and nox,
which means night. An equinox occurs when the Sun is overhead at Equator. During
equinox days and nights are equal all over the Earth. Equinoxes occur twice a year,
generally around March 20 and September 22.
5. As the Earth travels around the Sun on its imaginary path, the side leaning towards it
keeps changing. In December ,the Southern hemisphere leans towards the Sun and
receives more light and heat, making it warmer . The result of this that the souther
hemisphere enjoys summer in December.
