INTRODUCTION
In data communication terminology, a transmission medium is a physical
path between the transmitter and the receiver i.e. it is the channel through
which data is sent from one place to another. Transmission media is a
communication channel that carries the information from the sender to the
receiver. Data is transmitted through the electromagnetic signals. The main
functionality of the transmission media is to carry the information in the form
of bits through LAN(Local Area Network). It is a physical path between
transmitter and receiver in data communication.
TYPES OF TRANSMISSION MEDIA
1. Twisted Pair Cable:
● Description: Consists of pairs of insulated copper wires twisted together.
● Categories: Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, etc.
● Use Cases: Commonly used for Ethernet connections in local area networks (LANs).
● Advantages:
● Inexpensive.
● Easy to install.
● Widely available.
● Disadvantages:
● Limited bandwidth compared to other media.
● Susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI).

2. Coaxial Cable:
● Description: Central conductor surrounded by insulating layer, a metallic
shield, and an outer insulating layer.
● Types: RG-6, RG-58, etc.
● Use Cases: Cable television, broadband internet, and some networking
applications.
● Advantages:
● Higher bandwidth compared to twisted pair cable.
● Better shielding, less susceptible to EMI.
● Disadvantages:
● Thicker and less flexible than twisted pair.
● More expensive than twisted pair.

3. Optical Fiber:
● Description: Uses light signals transmitted through glass or plastic fibers.
● Types: Single-mode, Multi-mode.
● Use Cases: Long-distance communication, high-speed data transmission
● Advantages:
● High bandwidth and data transfer rates.
● Immune to EMI.
● Low signal attenuation over long distances.
● Disadvantages:
● Expensive to install and maintain.
● Fragile and can be difficult to splice or repair.
FACTORS AFFECTING TYPE
OF MEDIA
1. Application requirements: The choice depends on the specific bandwidth and latency
needs of applications running on the network.
2. Distance to be covered: Different transmission media are suitable for varying distances,
with twisted pair for short distances, coaxial cable for moderate ranges, and optical fiber for
long distances.
3.Budget considerations: Economic factors play a crucial role, with twisted pair being
cheap, coaxial cable offering balance, and optical fiber requiring a higher initial investment
4.Environmental factors: The selection is influenced by the level of electromagnetic
interference (EMI) in the environment, with twisted pair being susceptible, coaxial cable
having better shielding, and optical fiber being immune to EMI.
FUTURE TREND OF
TRANSMISSION MEDIA
The future trends of transmission media in networking are expected to
witness continuous advancements in fiber optic technology, integration of 5G
and wireless technologies, exploration of quantum communication for
enhanced security and speed, development of smart materials and cables
with self-healing capabilities, a focus on energy-efficient solutions, and the
evolution of global connectivity initiatives to create robust, high-speed, and
sustainable network infrastructures capable of meeting the growing demands
of diverse applications in an increasingly interconnected world.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the choice of transmission medium depends on factors such as
application requirements, distance considerations, budget constraints, and
environmental factors. As technology evolves, emerging trends continue to
shape the landscape of transmission media, influencing the efficiency and
capabilities of network infrastructures.
