A Lesson Plan in Mathematics IV

I. Objectives
At the end of 50 minutes discussion, pupils should be able to:
a. measure the length and width of a rectangle in meters and centimeters;
b. find the area of a rectangle when the width and length are given in square
centimeters and square meters, and
c. show enthusiasm in any given task.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Area of Plain Figures (M4MEIVb-58)
b. References: K to 12 Grade 4 CG, TG Math Grade 4 pages 260-264, LM Math
Grade 4 pages 194 to 196
c. Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, flashcards, cutouts, meter stick, folder,
book, table, door.
d. Integration: Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan: Gardening
Health: Benefits of Gardening

III. Learning Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preliminary Activities

1. Greeting
Good day class! How are you today? Good day Sir. We are fine.

2. Prayer
Before we begin the lesson for this day, let’s
ask for the presence of the Almighty God.
Would you please lead the prayer? (Student will lead the prayer)

3. Classroom Management
a. Checking of attendance
Is everyone present?

b. Setting standards for learning

What are the things we need to do when the
class begins? 1. We must listen and focus on the
topic.
2. We must cooperate in the class
discussion.
3. All activities will be finished in
time.

B. Drill
Let us have a short activity about basic
multiplication to boost your mood and test
your speed and accuracy.
8x6
9x7
7x6
4x9
5 x 12

Great job! Give yourself an angel clap!

C. Review

What was our lesson yesterday? Finding the area of a square

Very Good! Finding the area of a square is

like figuring out how much space is inside
it. You do this by multiplying the length of
one side of the square by itself.
Ok, if you truly understand let us have a
quick recap.

How do you get the area of a square again? We can get the area by multiplying the side
and side of a square.
Very good! And what is the formula? The formula is Area= S x S

Let us have an example:

4 cm

5 cm

8 cm

Very good!

Before starting our topic, we will have a

simple game. Do you like that? Yes Sir!

D. Motivation

Fill me

Instructions: You will be divided into 4

groups. I will give you cutouts for you to fill (Group themselves and pick
the space inside this shape, and whoever representatives)
finishes it first will have extra points later in
our activities. Do you understand? Yes sir!
What did you do in your activity? Sir, we filled the space inside the shape.

That’s correct, you filled the space inside the

shape.

What shape did you use in filling the shape? We use square

Very good! And what shape did you form? Rectangle

What do you call the space that is enclosed

in this rectangle? Area

Okay! Very good!

E. Presentation of the Lesson

1. Problem Opener

I have here a picture

What do you see in this picture? A garden

That’s right! A garden

What is the shape of the garden? Rectangle

Very good! Who among you has vegetable

gardens at home? (some of the students)

Do you love gardening? Yes Sir!

What do you think are the benefits of

gardening in our lives? Because gardening is also a form of
exercise and we can save money if we have
vegetable crops at home.
Very good!

Now let us read the problem James and his sister Julia made a vegetable
garden with a length of 8 m and a width of
5 m. What is the area of James and Julia's
garden?

What is the area of James and Julia's

What is asked? garden?
8 m and 5 m.
What are the given facts?

Very good!
To get the area of James and Julia’s garden,
all we need to do is multiply its length and
its width. Area can be measured using
different units of measurement, depending
on the system we use and its size. In this Meters
case, what is the unit of measurement used?
L= 8 m
What is the length? W= 5 m
and the width?

You see that the length is represented by the

letter L and the width is represented by the
letter W.

Now let us calculate the area using this

formula A= L x W
=8mx 5m
= 40 m2
Yes Sir!
Do you understand class?

2. Fixing Skills

Let us have an example.

25 cm

12 cm

Now how do we calculate the area of a

rectangle? To calculate the area, we need to know the
formula, and the formula is Area = length x
Okay! Lets practice width.

What is the length and width of the

rectangle? 25 cm and 12 cm

Very good!

This rectangle’s length is 25 cm and width is

12 cm.

How do you get its area again? A= L x W

What is the length? And the width? A=25 cm x 12 cm

So what is the total area? A= 300 cm2

Knowing the area of a rectangle is very

important, let us have another example.

Our school principal Sir Erenio D. Ortega

wants to build a basketball court with a
length of 30 meters and a width of 15
meters.

15 m

30 m

What is the shape of the basketball court

that Sir Ortega wants to build? Rectangle

How do we get its area? Multiply its length and width

Correct! Remember that we must multiply

the Length by the Width.

Now let us find out the area of the basketball

court. Who wants to try? A= L x W
A= 30 m x 15 m
A= 450 m2

What is the length and width? The length is 30 m and the width is 15m.

Very good!

Now let us multiply the L and W.

Area= L x W
Area= 30 m x 15 m
What is the answer? 450 m2

Therefore, the total area of the basketball

court that Sir Ortega will build is 450 m2.

Do you understand now how to find the area

of a rectangle? Yes sir!

F. Application
Now let's have an activity to see if you
really understand our lesson. You will be
grouped into 4.

I will give each group a meter stick to use in

the activity to find the area of the following
rectangles.

Give the area of the following rectangle.

1. Folder

2. Book

3. Table

4. Door

Did you enjoy our activity? Yes Sir!

G. Generalization

Class, how do we get the area of a

rectangle? We can get the area by multiplying the
length and width.

Excellent! And what is the formula? Area= Length x Width

Very good! Give yourselves an angle clap.

IV. Evaluation
Find the area of the following rectangles.

1.
34 cm

17 cm

2.
12 m
24 m

3.
12 m

6m

4.
6m
9m
5.

22 cm
32 cm

V. Assignment
Solve the following problems.
1. Mr. Ben wants to build a gym with a length of 60 m and a width of 30 m, what is
the total area of the gym?
2. Mrs. Navaro had a flower garden with a length of 32 m and a width of 14 m, what
is the total area of her garden?
