of a statistical data. (M7SPIVh-1)
Calculates the measures of variability of grouped
and ungrouped data. (M7SP-IVh-i-1)
➢ Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Grade 8 Mathematics Learner’s Module
➢ Chapter: 10 Pages: 507-519, 542-551 Topic: Measure of Variability of Grouped
and Ungrouped Data
➢ Objectives:
1. To illustrate the measure of variability (range, average deviation, variance,
standard deviation) of a statistical data.
2. To calculate the measure of variability of grouped and ungrouped data.

Let Us Discover

The Simplified Self Learning Module (SSLM) will help you understand the basic
concept of measure of variability such as range, average deviation, standard deviation and
variance.
MEASURE OF VARIABILITY OF UNGROUPED DATA
Measure of variability refer to the spread of the values about the mean.
Range is the simplest measure of variability. Range = Highest value – smallest value
Mean Deviation/Average Deviation is the dispersion of a set of data about the average of
the given data.

Mean Deviation = ̅ is the mean; and N is the

number of scores.

̅)𝟐
∑(𝒙−𝒙
Standard Deviation is the most important measure of dispersion. SD = √ , where
𝑵
SD is the standard deviation.
Variance is a measure of how spread out a data set is. It is calculated as the average squared
deviation of each number from the mean of a data set.

Example:
Linda’s scores in Mathematics 7 quiz are 5,19,16,10,24,26,29,30 and 39. Calculate
the range, average deviation, standard deviation, and variance.
Solution:
1. Range = H - L = 39 - 5 = 34
2. Mean Deviation
Procedure in calculating the mean deviation:
a. Find the mean ∑𝒙 𝟓 +𝟏𝟎+𝟏𝟔+𝟏𝟗+𝟐𝟒+𝟐𝟔+𝟐𝟗+𝟑𝟎+𝟑𝟗 𝟏𝟗𝟖
̅= =
𝒙 = = 22
𝑵 𝟗 𝟗

b. Find the absolute difference between each score and the mean.
|x-𝑥̅ | = |5 - 22| = 17 = |10- 22| = 12 = |16- 22| = 6 = |19-22| = 3 = |24-22| = 2
= ||26-22|= 4 =||29-22| =7 = |30-22| =8 = |39-22| =17

c. Find the sum of the absolute difference |x-𝑥̅ |. ∑ |x − 𝑥̅ | = 76

d. Solve for the mean deviation by dividing the result in step c by N.
∑ |𝐱−𝒙̅| 𝟕𝟔
M.D. = = = 8.77

3. Standard Deviation
Calculate the standard deviation (SD) using the formula 4.Variance

MEASURE OF VARIABILITY OF GROUPED DATA

1. Range = Upper Class Boundary of the − Lower Class Boundary of the
Highest Interval Lowest Interval

2. The Mean Deviation/Average Deviation of Grouped Data

∑ 𝒇|𝒙−𝒙
̅|
AD = where, AD is the average deviation/mean deviation; f is the frequency;
𝒏
̅ is the mean and n is the number of measurement or values.
x given values; 𝒙

3. The Variance of Grouped Data (𝜎 2 )

̅)𝟐
∑ 𝒇(𝒙−𝒙
𝝈𝟐 = ∑ 𝒇−𝟏
where, f is the class frequency, x is the class mark, ̅𝒙 is class
mean and ∑ 𝒇 is the total number of frequency.

4. Standard Deviation of Grouped Data. To get the value of the standard deviation (s), get
the square root of the variance (𝛿)2 : s = √𝝈𝟐
