The Brief
Developing an in-depth international trade analysis
This assignment requires students to discuss and analyze international trade for a selected
economy and examine a country’s international trade policies.
Part 1: Trade Situation Analysis
In this section, select a country in Africa and cover the following:
Overview of the country’s international trade situation
Provide an overview analysis of the country's international trade situation in 2022 or 2023.
Conduct the following aspects (including but not limited to) major exports, import goods, and
major trading partners.
Based on the trade theories, including the gravity model and trade integration, please study the
determinants in the country’s trade with one of its major trading partners.
Use data to support analysis. Retrieve data from official/reliable sources like Trade Map
(trademap.org), WITS (wits.worldbank.org), the IMF, World Bank, OECD, National Customs
Offices, National Statistics Offices, official reports, etc. Students may also wish to apply graphs,
tables, etc.
For instance, if you choose South Africa, first describe its major exports and imports products,
major exporters, and importers. Second, you can select one trading partner of South Africa
among its major exporters or importers. Finally, apply trade theories, gravity model, and trade
integration to study the determinants in South Africa’s trade with the selected exporter or
importer regarding the type of products, value, trends in recent years, etc.
Part 2: International Trade Policy Analysis
In this section, select ONE topic from the following:
Topic 1: Trade Policy and Innovation
2
The interaction between trade policy and innovation has garnered significant attention in recent
years. Trade agreements have the potential to both foster and hinder innovation ecosystems
globally. While they can facilitate the exchange of knowledge, technology, and goods, they may
pose challenges, such as intellectual property rights concerns and regulatory harmonization
issues. This assignment aims to explore the complexities of trade policy concerning innovation,
considering both its benefits and drawbacks.
Question: How do trade agreements impact innovation ecosystems, and what are the potential
benefits and drawbacks of using trade policy to promote innovation?
Topic 2: The Economic Advantages and Disadvantages of the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade
Agreement (BTA) and Vietnam's WTO Accession
Prior to enacting the VN-US BTA, there was skepticism in Vietnam regarding its advantages,
given the distant, vast, and regulation-heavy nature of the US market. Conversely, there was
widespread optimism in Vietnam before its accession to the WTO in 2007, with many
anticipating positive transformations. However, the outcomes of these two events diverged
significantly from initial expectations. Vietnam witnessed a substantial increase in exports
shortly after implementing the BTA. Conversely, following its accession to the WTO in 2007,
Vietnam encountered an economic downturn characterized by escalating trade deficits, inflation,
soaring interest rates, and a currency depreciation of over 25% within two weeks in May 2008.
Question: Why did Vietnam benefit from the BTA but not from WTO accession?
Topic 3: Trade Policy and Terms of Trade Gain
Applying trade policy to enhance terms of trade gain is critical for nations engaging in
international trade. Terms of trade, representing the ratio of export prices to import prices,
directly impact a country's economic welfare and competitiveness. This assignment seeks to
explore the rationale behind applying trade policy to gain favorable terms of trade, considering
both theoretical principles and practical implications.
Question: Should nations actively apply trade policy measures to gain favorable terms of trade?
Analyze the potential benefits and risks associated with using trade policy to influence terms of
trade, considering factors such as economic efficiency, welfare implications, and countries'
strategic positioning in the global trade landscape.
Topic 4: Trade Policy and Economies of Scale
Economies of scale play a pivotal role in shaping the competitiveness and efficiency of firms in
international trade. Trade policies can significantly influence the extent to which economies of
scale are realized, impacting both domestic industries and global trade dynamics. This
assignment aims to explore the relationship between trade policy and economies of scale,
examining how trade policies can either facilitate or hinder the realization of economies of scale
and their implications for economic growth and welfare.
3
Question:
Discuss the impact of trade policy on economies of scale. Evaluate how trade policies can affect
firms' ability to achieve economies of scale in production and distribution processes. Consider
the potential benefits and drawbacks of trade policies aimed at promoting or inhibiting
economies of scale and analyze their implications for domestic industries, international trade,
and overall economic performance.
What you need to do:
Step 1: Group Allocation
Spend some time networking with fellow students during and outside workshops to form a group
for this assignment (the 3-6-member group is recommended). You will need to create a team and
self-assign into one team.
It is recommended that an initial meeting be held to assign a Team Leader, set some basic
rules/expectations (grade aspirations, contributions, etc.), and discuss the assignment brief in
detail before allocating tasks among members. Each team member should take notes during
meetings.
Step 2: Research conduct
Conduct research by using the below eight stages (see the recommended text for detailed
analysis conducting stage descriptions):
1: Identify and develop your topic
2: Do a preliminary search for information
3: Locate materials
4: Evaluate your sources
5: Make notes
6: Write your paper
7: Cite your sources properly
8: Proofread
Recommended Structure:
Your assignment should be presented in report format and include numbered sections and
headings, such as below. The report must also be presented professionally in font size, spacing,
margins, design, and referencing.
