Classification of Rocks for engineering purposes
Geologists use genetic rock classification for practical and theoretical insights, creating a model for
exploration. Challenges in field criteria may lead to simpler rock classifications. Various rock types are
categorized based on engineering properties, but challenges arise in groups like basalt, gabbro, and
granite. Traditional names are employed in specific industries, like “whinstone” in quarrying and
“freestone” in the blockstone industry. Rock fabric, defined by mineral constituents and textural elements,
varies between anisotropic and isotropic rocks. Engineers prioritize index properties influencing project
planning and costs. Effective porosity and permeability are crucial for evaluating fluid penetration in
rocks, with water-yielding capacity, hydraulic conductivity, and other properties assessing strength and
behavior under diverse conditions.
