Traction
Traction is the force applied in a specific direction. To apply the force needed to overcome
the natural force or pull of muscle groups.
• Ropes
• Pulleys
• Weight is used.
Purposes of Traction
1. To reduce and immobilize fracture
2. To regain normal length
3. To lessen or eliminate muscle spasm.
4. To prevent deformity.
5. To reduce pain.
i. Skin traction:-
a. Buck traction - it is use in adult
Indication-
• Back pain
• Hip fracture
• Acetabulum fracture
• Femur neck fracture

b. Russell traction :-
➢ Used to align a fractured femur Shaft,(In adult) lower leg is supported in a sling just
below the knee
• Pulling forces are exerted upwards and longitudinally
c. Bryant traction –(gallows traction)
➢ Orthopedic traction (<6yr) used in young children patient's limbs are suspended in
the air vertically at a ninety Degree angle from the hips and knees slightly flexed.
ii. Skeletal Traction
1. Traction applied by the under aseptic conditions using wires, pins, or tongs placed
through bones and provides a strong, continuous pull.
2. Skeletal traction is used most frequently in treating fractures of the femur, humerus,
tibia, and cervical spine.
WIN NURSING COACHING HALDI GHATI MARG PRATAP NAGAR JAIPUR 8742073072
Skeletal traction:- weight is apply directly on bone.
1. Halo traction:- Encircles and is fixed to the head of a patient management of
destabilize the cervical spine
2. Cervical tong traction- Uses for treatment of cervical spine fractures.
Log rolling method- Use in spinal fracture or any type of spinal fracture.

iii. Specific traction-
1. Balanced Suspension Traction
➢ Uses additional weights to counterbalance the traction force floats the extremity in
the traction apparatus. breaks a femur bone In this weight is apply in Forward and
backward Direction.
2. Dunlop traction- It use in supracondyle fracture of humerus in children.
3. Pelvic traction- It is use in pelvic bone. Relieve pain in the lower back
WIN NURSING COACHING HALDI GHATI MARG PRATAP NAGAR JAIPUR 8742073072
4. Cervical traction:-Also known as- head halter traction use in neck spasm.
Complications:-
1. Infection
2. Skin breakdown
3. Neurovascular compromise resulting in increased pain, muscle spasms, numbness,
tingling, and loss of sensation.
5. Immobility
a. Stasis pneumonia.
b. Thrombophlebitis.
c. Pressure ulcers.
d. Urinary infection add calculi.
e. Constipation.
Nursing Assessment
1. Assess for pain, Swelling
2. Assess skin condition
3. Assess for alignment of the affected body part.
4. Assess for signs and symptoms of complications.
5. Weights should hang freely.
Nursing attention-
• Never remove the weights when repositioning the patient who is in skeletal traction
because this will interrupt the line of pull and cause the patient considerable pain.
WIN NURSING COACHING HALDI GHATI MARG PRATAP NAGAR JAIPUR 8742073072
• Every complaint of the patient in traction should be investigation immediately to
prevent injury.
Nursing diagnosis
• Impaired Physical Mobility
• Risk for Impaired Skin Integrity
• Risk for Peripheral Neurovascular Dysfunction
Result of trcation
• Exercises as instructed; deep breaths hourly; fluid intake 2,000 to 2,500 mL/24 hours.
• No signs of skin breakdown under traction bandage or over bony prominences.
• No drainage, redness, odor at pin site.
• No motor or sensory impairment.
