Temporary Facilities

In planning a site layout, identification sizing and placement of all


the necessary temporary facilities within the boundaries of the site
is very vital.

Such temporary facilities include;

 Lay-down areas

Storage/warehouses

Shops (Fabrication shops/Maintenance shops)

Residences

Plants/equipment 2

Site Accessibility
Easy accessibility will boost equipment and vehicle driver morale,
reduce the risk of accidents, and save time when arriving at and
departing from site
Information Signs
Placement of site maps and other information signs at strategic
positions is necessary. Such signage includes

Site maps showing entry and exit points

Traffic regulatory signs (eg. Speed limits)

Emergency routes and underground services

Offices
Offices ought to be close together, near the construction site, and
in a secure location. Proper office equipment should be provided.

Accommodation

All types of staff working in the project may require camp


accommodations.

Craft Change-Houses

During waiting periods, it provides a secure area for craftsmen to


change and store clothes, wash, and rest.

Water Supply and Sanitation
To facilitate the work, water and bathroom facilities must be located
in practical areas.

Storage

Laydown areas refer to storage space for large materials and


equipment

Warehouses are sheltered storage facilities

Material staging areas are where materials are stored near the
work on a short-term basis

Material Handling
Material handling accounts for one-third or more of all construction
activities.
The correct handling equipment and planning needs to be adopted
to reduce multiple handling thus, save money and time.

Batch plant and fabrication Shops

On projects where it is more cost effective to produce concrete on


site, batching plants are installed.

An on-site batching plant will be accompanied by aggregate


storage piles, cement silos, and admixture tanks.

Workshops are used where materials and equipment are fabricated
on site: electrical, mechanical, carpentry, etc.

Security

Entrance: Properly guarded entrance to the site

 Lighting: Availability of standby generator to maintain site lighting

 Fencing: Boundaries should be fenced off from a security point


of view
Site cleaning

It is vital to keep the work environment free of debris. 7

Considerations for Selecting Temporary Facilities

Type of contract

With turn-key contracts, the contractor can combine


administrative and construction processes, allowing for the
selection of fewer but larger and more efficient temporary
facilities.

If the project is managed through a number of different contracts,


this will result in a greater number of smaller temporary facilities
supporting each particular contractor.

Type of construction

The material used for various types of construction differ.


therefore the storage and fabrication facilities required also vary.
For instance more space for storage and fabrication will be
required for an industrial building project than for a road project

The number and location of washrooms may also vary for


different types of constructions

Size of project
A trailer or portable building can be used to manage a minor
project. While a five- to ten-year project may necessitate more
permanent temporary buildings.
Project location
Projects in unpopulated areas or areas with a scarcity of qualified
workers necessitate dining and residential facilities.

Projects located outside of industrial areas necessitate extra on-


site services, such as a batching plant, equipment maintenance
shops, long-term storage facilities, and even family recreation

centers.

When the use of plants are adopted extensively on site, it reducing


the labor requirement. Machines and ancillary equipment have
made many tasks simpler, and are more efficient.

Aims of mechanization

Increase productivity

Minimize cost

For completion of tasks that cannot be undertaken manually

Minimize hard physical labor

Plants required on a construction site can be acquired through
any of the means listed below;

• Hiring from a plant hire company. This required no expensive


plant department set-up.

• Hiring from own company’s plant department at a living rate


per hour/day/week.

• Buying plant when required with the full cost being charged
to the contract. The contract is then credited later when the
plan is revalued after it is sent back to the yard, or is sold.
