Patterns MR

The document proposes a redevelopment plan for the suburb of Bexley in Christchurch, New Zealand following seismic damage. It involves overlaying patterns from sedimentation processes in the nearby Avon-Heathcote Estuary to organize the new urban layout. Four sedimentary processes - erosion, sedimentation, slumping, and accretion/subduction - are isolated from aerial imagery of the estuary. Topographic models of each are generated and translated into architectural generators for circulation, structure, massing, and facade treatment of new buildings. This system is then applied to generate the form of a proposed new medium-density housing complex in the redeveloped Bexley suburb.

PATTERN-BASED URBAN ORGANISATION

NEW BEXLEY
& THE BEXLEY CANAL MODEL

Grafting (World)
uirect superposition o1 1our cities that contain arti1iciaJ bodies o1 water as precedents 1or urban arranement in BeJey.
These arranements o1 road, water body and buiJdin ede are isoJated and appJied into the BeJey suburban boundary.
Grafting (Local)
Shi1tin 1urther down in scaJe the sedimentary concentrations within the Avon~Eeathcote estuary are isoJated.
These concentrations then become the basis 1or a enerative eercise in mappin densities back into the BeJey
urban pJan and become the initiaJ architectonic drivers 1or a new arranement o1 buiJt 1orm.
Superimposition o1 sedimentary densities in the Avon~Eeathcote estuary into BeJey

The suburb o1 BeJey as de1ined by the Avon River and the WetJands hihJihted
in reen
BeJey in its contet as represented by a horizontaJ directionaJ map with marked
variance in both road systems and pJot arranement.
The reJationship between buiJt 1orm, road network and pubJic 1ieJds o1 activity and its mani1estation in precedent cities is overJaid onto BeJey suestin new spatiaJ modeJs 1or a redesined urban 1abric.
The same sedimentary densities are mapped in three dimensions to enerate possibJe tectonic reJationships between new buiJt 1orm and an arti1icaJJy enerated topoJoy.
The suburb o1 BeJey is Jocated to the east o1 the Christchurch
CBu, pJaced directJy between a bend in the Avon River and neih~
bourin suburb Aranui. Post~recent seismic activity in the Can~
terbury reion aJmost aJJ o1 BeJey has been cJassi1ied as a Red
Zone with severe damae to both Jand and buiJdins. BeJey is
aJso considered to be a Eih Risk FJood Zone with the Avon river
in immediate proimity and the subsequent
possibJe combination o1 hih tides and 1Joodin. ApproimateJy
100 houses are to becJeared away with no immediate pJan 1or re~
deveJopment in the 1uture. This suburban tabuJa rasa presents
the opportunity 1or a reconsideration o1 the suburbs urban
pJannin, with a new emphasis on the round pJane itseJ1 and the
roJe o1 transport in1rastructure as a enerator o1 both buiJt
1orm and pedestrian 1ieJds o1 activity.
The new BeJey modeJ is a proposition 1or a system o1 man~made
canaJs that traverse the redesined suburban Jayout, coJJectin

1rom the wetJands, redistributin it systematicaJJy to
mitiate 1Joodin whiJe eneratin potentiaJity 1or new proram~
matic activity. The oriinaJ housin pJan is reoranised into a
section o1 open pJot housin and two cJusters o1 medium density
housin. The Jarer housin proect has been chosen as a modeJ
1or potentiaJ 1uture urban con1iurations under the operatin
system o1 buiJt 1orm, vehicuJar network and 1ieJds o1 activity
as understood by precedin pattern isoJation and manipuJation.

Erosion is de1ined as a transporta~
tion and subsequent reJocation o1
materiaJ via naturaJ processes. The
consequence o1 erosion in matter is
eneraJJy resuJtant in a neative ~
in architecturaJ convention we can
interpret this operation as a means
o1 deveJopin circuJation space
throuh a buiJdin mass by way o1
vehicuJar or pedestrian activity.
AeriaJ imaery o1 erosion in the
Avon~Eeathcote Estuary is used to
enerate a toporaphicaJ modeJ which
is then assined a coJour map that
is variabJe on the JocaJ radient at
any one point on the sur1ace.
Areas o1 bJue sini1y the most
raduaJ incJine, reen bein areas
with increased incJine and red rep~
resentative o1 those areas with the
steepest JocaJ incJine. These three
variabJes are potentiaJ oranisa~
tionaJ modeJs, and in architectonic
echane, areas o1 raduaJ incJine
become 1ieJds o1 pubJic activity and
those with a steep nature are trans~
Jated into verticaJ buiJdin mass.
Sedimentation in nature resuJts in
the 1ormation o1 depositionaJ Jand~
1orms, with in1inite variation in
both shape and scaJe. This area~
tion o1 matter is interpreted as the
concentration o1 materiaJ in an ar~
chitecturaJ sense ~ 1orms o1 sedimen~
tation derived 1rom Estuary imaery
are transJated into the enerative
structuraJ system 1or a buiJdin
type. Sediment mani1ests in a topo~
JoicaJ modeJ as a series o1 crests
and trouhs, this variance in the z
ais is the basis 1or a structuraJ
eometry o1 irders that vary in size
and scaJe dependent on prorammatic
demand as weJJ as materiaJ concentra~
tion within the buiJdin. Yariations
on the topoJoicaJ modeJ o11er a en~
erative process o1 deveJopin a
structuraJ eometry 1or an architec~
turaJ appJication.
SJump is de1ined as mass dispJacement
occurin over a short distance o1
measurabJe radient in topoJoy. SJump
is mirated into architectonic 1orm as
a driver 1or buiJdin voJume, where a
hiher assined 'sJump' vaJue trans~
Jates into a Jarer eneration o1
buiJt 1orm with an increased radient
incJine. SJump Jines that are isoJated
1rom a 3u topoJoicaJ modeJ are ma~
nipuJated with 1orces in the and y
ais to enerate new variances o1 ma~
teriaJ concentration in an architec~
turaJ body. These concentrations can
aJso operate in the states o1 either
voJumetric openess or cJosedness in
spatiaJ reJationships with the rest o1
the buiJt 1orm.
Accretion and Subduction are the
materiaJ echane o1 tectonic 1orm
by means o1 either addition or em~
beddin. WhiJe these operations are
not in action within the Estuary,
they o11er interestin materiaJ re~
Jationships as a resuJt o1 Jayerin
and the verticaJ echane o1 mass.
The reJevant topoJoicaJ modeJ 1or
these two operations suests a
stron nature o1 accumuJation, with
particuJar bodies o1 matter occupy~
in Jarer areas as weJJ as protrud~
in 1rom the toporaphy at varied
intervaJs. An architectonic correJa~
tion occurs when this trait is ap~
pJied as a possibJe enerative tooJ
1or cJaddin]1acade systems as weJJ
as articuJation o1 arti1icaJ sur1ace
and Jandscapin. Yariations occur
when a particuJar waJJ eJement o1
the buiJdin overJaps another, but
at another moment on the eterior
recedes into the buiJdin skin to
1orm an interior waJJ.
BUILDING GENERATION
The naturaJJy occurin patterns that are isoJated 1rom the Avon ~ Eeathcote Estuary to
enerate an oranisationaJ pJan 1or BeJey are continousJy open to variation and chane. A
simiJar set o1 traits when appJied to buiJdin typoJoy a11ords new potentiaJ 1or 1orm,
structure and decoration. The system o1 codi1ication 1or the suburban pJan constitutes o1
1our variabJes ~ buiJt 1orm, vehicuJar network, waterway and urban space.
To neotiate a simiJar Joic to architecture a new set o1 variabJes, derived 1rom 1our
tectonic operations are sini1ied a workin equivaJent aJJowin 1or new variations on the
buiJdin modeJ.
The 1our tectonic operations are Erosion, Sediment, SJump and Accrete]Subduct ~ naturaJJy
occurin processes o1 materiaJ echane that are transJated into architectonic processes
o1 CircuJation, Structure, Mass and Sur1ace treatment. The superposition o1 the 1our op~
erations appJied onto the topoJoy o1 beJey deveJops a series o1 1ormaJ reJationships
with architecture which are in turn used to enerate the 1inaJ buiJdin 1orm throuh vaJue
udements.
