Course Objectives: To learn
1. To study the fundamentals of chemical process utilities such as water & steam.
2. To understand basic concepts of the industrial process pumps such as compressors & vacuum
pumps.
3. To study the concepts of refrigeration systems and their types.
4. To identify the importance of industrial insulation.
5. To explore the properties & applications of inert gases.

UNIT-I (Classes-9)
Various process utilities, their role and importance in chemical plants. WATER: sources of water,
storage and distribution of water, water for boiler use, cooling purposes, STEAM: Steam generation
and its application in chemical process plants, distribution and utilization, steam economy,
condensate utilization, steam traps and their selection and application, waste heat utilization.
UNIT-II (Classes-9)
Compressors and vacuum pumps: Types and performance characteristics. Methods of vacuum
development and their limitations, materials handling under vacuum.
UNIT-III (Classes-9)
Refrigeration systems: types and their characteristics, load calculation, humidification and de
humidification equipment, cooling tower, exhaust and ventilation, cryogenics, production of liquid
N2 and O2 .
UNIT-IV (Classes-9)
Insulation: Importance of insulation for equipment, insulation materials and their effect on various
materials of equipment/piping/fitting and valves, insulation for high, intermediate, low and sub
zero temperatures including cryogenic insulation.
UNIT-V (Classes-9)
INERT GASES: Properties & their use, sources and methods of generation, comparison of nitro
generation routes, general arrangement for inerting system, operational, maintenance and safety
aspects.

Course Outcomes:
After completing the course, the students are able to:
1. Explain the fundamentals of chemical process utilities such as water & steam.
2. Apply the basic concepts of the industrial process pumps such as compressors & vacuum
pumps.
3. Describe the concepts of refrigeration systems and their types
4. Evaluate the importance of industrial insulation.
5. Describe the properties & applications of inert gases.
