Machine Shop: Lathe II part

Machine Tools
• They are powered by Manually or Electrically.
•They work a large variety of materials, metals in particular to produce a required shape.
•They are called the mother of machines since they are the machines enabling the
production of any machines including themselves.

Different types of machines tools used in industries

Lathe – A machine tool that rotates a work piece on its axis to carry out various operations such as drilling, turning, boring,
facing, threading, grooving and parting off.
Milling – A machine tool used to machine solid materials.
Shaper – A machine tool that uses straight or linear motion between the work piece and a single-point cutting tool to
machine a linear tool path. A shaper is similar to a planer, but it is smaller, and has a cutter that rides a ram which moves above
a fixed work piece, as compared to the whole work piece moving underneath the cutter.
Planer – A metalworking machine tool that uses straight or linear movement between the work piece and a single-point
cutting tool to machine a linear tool path.
Broaching – A machine tool that uses a toothed tool or a broach to remove material. The tool can use two types of
broaching, namely rotary and linear.
Grinding – A machine tool used for grinding, a process whereby an abrasive wheel is used as the cutting tool.
Some other types of machine tools are drill presses, gear shapers, saws and threading machines.

LATHE
Lathe is a machine that
helps in shaping several
material pieces in the
desired shapes. A lathe is a
machine that rotates the
piece on the axis in order
to perform various
operations like cutting,
facing, knurling,
deformation and more.
Metal spinning, thermal
spraying, woodturning and
metalworking are the
common operations
performed with a lathe
machine. One can even
shape pottery with this
working wonder. Whatever
material used in lathe
machine whether metal or
wood is molded first. The
most commonly used
lathes are the
woodworking lathes.
