AS 221 Homework: Unit 18 & 19, Enroute Charts and Procedures
**Refer to the low-enroute chart or included images to answer all questions**
1. Why is Pocatello Regional Airport green but American Falls is brown?
The Pocatello Regional Airport is green because it has at least one Instrument Approach Procedure
listed in the FAA’s Terminal Procedures Publication. American Falls is brown because it does not
have a published IAP.
2. You are traveling northwest on V21-257 from BANNO to PIH to SICOY. What vertical navigation
planning is required as you cross PIH?
The “X” over PIH indicates a minimum crossing altitude (MCA). However, the two MCA’s listed apply
when planning to fly Southeast bound on either V21-257. Since we are traveling northwest bound
on V21-257, no action needs to be taken prior to crossing PIH. Simply the follow the new MEA or
assigned altitude at/above the new MEA to SICOY and planned route.
3. What equipment is required to fly southwest from PIH on T331?
An IFR certified GPS is required to fly southwest from PIH on T331.
4. What action is required if you are not in radar contact when you cross Burley VOR/DME?
If not in radar contact when you cross Burley VOR/DME, you must make the position report to ATC
as it’s a compulsory reporting point.
5. When should you change frequency from Nez Perce (MQG) to Pullman (PUW) when traveling
northwest on V253?
At 13 DME from MQG VOR/DME you should change frequency to PUW VOR/DME which is an
additional 10 DME away.
6. Can you identify RENGO intersection (on V536 southwest of Pullman VOR-DME) using only PUW if
you are flying at 5700 MSL?
The MOCA on V536 southwest bound is at 5,700 ft MSL, guaranteeing obstacle clearance and
navigational aid reception up to 22 NM from the PUW VOR/DME. At RENGO intersection, you’re
beyond 22 NM and thus outside the range of guaranteed nav signal reception, meaning you
wouldn’t be able to identify RENGO intersection.
7. What is the lowest appropriate IFR cruising altitude if you plan to fly GPS-direct from Lewiston-Nez
Perce Co (KLWS) to Colfax (S94)?
10,000 feet would be the lowest appropriate IFR cruising altitude if planning to fly direct from KLWS
to S94. The OROCA is 8,700 feet MSL, and since flying a magnetic course Northwest bound, you
want to select an even thousand IFR cruising altitude.
8. What is the meaning of the “R” in the flag at SKOTT intersection (northeast corner of image)?
The meaning of the “R” in the flag at SKOTT intersection indicates a Minimum Reception Altitude
(MRA). Below SKOTT intersection, the MRA is listed at 12,000 feet MSL. An MRA is defined as the
lowest altitude at which an intersection/fix can be identified.
9. Which ARTCC should you contact and what frequency will you use while crossing SKOTT
intersection?
While crossing SKOTT intersection, I would contact Salt Lake City Center (ARTCC) on 133.4.
10. Which FSS should you contact and what frequency will you use while crossing SKOTT intersection?
While crossing SKOTT intersection, I would contact Great Falls Radio (FSS) on 122.5 as indicated by
the RCO near the top right of the chart.
