Guillermo Tolentino
He's a sculptor.Guillermo Tolentino is among the much-acclaimed artists and cultural icons of the Province of
Bulacan, Philippines.Guillermo Estrella Tolentino is the "Father of Philippine Arts", a product of the Revival period in
Philippine art. He also is the fourth director of the UP School of Fine Arts.
His works: UP Oblation- the symbol of freedom at the campus; his masterpiece, Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan
the symbol of the Filipinos' cry for freedom; his designed for the Ramon Magsaysay Award the gold and bronze
medals and the seal of the Republic of the Philippines that he made, named him "National Artist for Sculpture" in
1973.
A conservative who belonged to the old school, Guillermo Estrella Tolentino was named National Artist in Sculpture in
1973. More into clay modeling, he was a product of Philippine art's Revival period, and studied at the Royal Academy
of Fine Arts in Rome. n 1925, upon returning to the Philippines from Europe, he joined the University of the
Philippines School of Fine Arts as a professor. He became its fourth director from 1952 to 1955. There he was mentor
to sculptors like National Artist Napoleon V. Abueva.
n 1935, he was commissioned to create the Oblation, which became a symbol of freedom, for the UP. Among his
other works are the bronze figure of President Quezon at Quezon Memorial, busts of Jose Rizal at UP and UE, the
marble statue of Ramon Magsaysay at the GSS Building, and granolithics of heroic statues representing education,
medicine, forestry, veterinary science, fine arts and music at UP. He also designed the seal of the Republic of the
Philippines and the gold and bronze medals for the Ramon Magsaysay Award. However, his masterpiece is the
Bonifacio Monument that stands at the intersection of Rizal Avenue and EDSA in Caloocan City. t was completed in
1933 and represents the first encounter between Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan.
Jose Joya
Venice Jos T. Joya (19311995) was a Filipino abstract artist and a National Artist of the Philippines
awardee. Profile of the Artist
Joya was a printmaker, mixed media artist, and a former dean of the University of the Philippines' College
of Fine Arts. He pioneered abstract expressionism in the Philippines. His canvases were characterized by
"dynamic spontaneity" and "quick gestures" of action painting. He is the creator of compositions that were
described as "vigorous compositions" of heavy impastoes, bold brushstrokes, controlled dips, and
diagonal swipes".Joya added the brilliant tropical colors. He was awarded a Fulbright-Smile-Mundt grant
which enabled him to pursue a master's degree in Fine Arts in 1956-57
His works were strongly influenced by the tropical landscapes of the Philippine slands. Among his
masterpieces are the Nanking (a collage rendered with Asian calligraphy and forms and patterns
resembling rice paddies), the Granadean Arabesque (1958) and Jos T. Joya (19311995) was a Filipino
