Insights – Methodical: Implementability (02-10-2023)

John Rey Fernandez
Marketplace Team Leader, Seller’s Hub Inc.

Getting Started:
Question for all: How do you install the innovation mindset to your team?

Principles and Practices:

“Innovation—any new idea—by definition will not be accepted at first. It takes repeated attempts, endless
demonstrations, and monotonous rehearsals before an organization can accept and internalize
innovation. This requires courageous patience.” - Warren Bennis

Implementing innovation or change is really hard and scary for some, but it is necessary for the
organization, some even might resist or are already resisting to innovate. The single biggest reason why
most organizations and individuals do not achieve their full potential is fear of failure. There are no
guarantees that any new idea will work. We must accept failing is an important part of learning,
development and progress.

What do people need to embrace innovation? Intellectual Bandwidth & Emotional Fortitude.

This is the key insight for me, to be able to implement change you’ll have to have the intellectual
bandwidth. The ability to think outside the box, yes it’s a skill that we can practice, always be open
minded for new things and suggestions from other people, without critical thinking and experiences we
can’t innovate.

And also the emotional fortitude to accept that there's always a failure to change and not everyone’s open
to development that you want, and we have to accept it.

How do we effectively apply new ideas?

1.) Imagine - As sir FAH says “Begin with the end in mind.” there should always be an outcome,
think of the things that you want to happen, what does it look like?

2.) Design - Create a step by step process with a timeline of the activities you or your team need to
do, at this part you can already see what you need and who you need in order to accomplish this.

3.) Execute - As soon as you get a designed gameplan, get back to work and execute it right away,
don’t think of failing or what might be a problem you’ll encounter, sometimes we overthink the
process and waste everyone’s time.

4.) Assess - Check the game plan, present the gathered information of what worked on the project
and what we must adjust in order to proceed.

5.) Scale - If we’re done with the development plan, this is the part where we decide to push through
with the project or turn it around.

This is actually very related to me, we like to call this a “Development Plan”. Every time we want to
achieve something it has to be done in a designed manner, and it's broken down into 3 phases, the
Foundation, Integration and Optimization.

In closing,

“If you want to build an enduring great company, don’t make the mistake the leaders of Apple Computer
made in the late 1980s. After the remarkable success of the Macintosh computer and the departure of
Steve Jobs, Apple’s leaders spent their time trying to come up with the next insanely great innovation.
Instead, they should have spent their time being social inventors, designing an environment that
would be the seedbed for many insanely great innovations over decades to come.” - Jim collins

Innovation is not only about the new products, services, brand, strategies, technologies etc, there should
be an “environment” of innovation where ideas always spring out from everyone in an organization and
where innovation is a norm.

Taking it Home:

1. What key insight did you gain from the write-up?

2. How do you apply the insight you gained in your company?
3. What can your fellow CEOs do this week to grow your business?
