What is Classroom Management System?

1. Classroom management is a multi-faceted approach that involves the use of various tools,
strategies and techniques to create an environment that is conducive to learning. The goal is to establish a
positive and productive atmosphere in which students can thrive academically, socially as well as
emotionally.

2. A good classroom management system identifies the close relationship between positive
behavior and effective instructions. Therefore, an integral part of a classroom management system
includes usage of effective instructional practices for understanding students learning needs and social
needs vis-a-vis covering up the desired curriculum.

Methodology management

(a) Behavioral Prospects: Behavioral prospects act as a foundation in classroom management. It

comprises of the following sub aspects

Setting clear & concise code of conduct: Establishing and communicating a

clear and concise code of conduct from the onset of an academic session helps reducing ill-
disciplined cases. A reasonable reward / punishment for every behavior and academic
performance help as a positive stressor within the students which helps them being alert and
attentive. Some of the tips to for setting clearer and concise code of conduct are
 The rules should be clear and straight-forward.
 Rules must reflect positivity (for e.g. instead of saying “Donont speak in the class” it
should be “Raise your hand before speaking in a class”).
 They must be reinforced consistently.
 Rules must be consistent for all the students; there must not be any sort of nepotism.
 Rules are set by the administration but suggestions from students invoke a sense of
ownership in them, thus leading to lesser chances of any breach.
 General awareness of rules and its implication on their educational carrier helps him /
her to understand and follow them.
 Rules should be adaptable. (Avoid rigidity)

Incorporating Humor and Fun: Educational activities can often lead to boredom which
ends up either of the following cases
 Lack of attention of students.
 Misbehavior.
 Loss of control of a teacher over her / his students.
Use of humor helps to create a lighthearted atmosphere in classroom. A directress must plan an
enjoyable and relevant activity that makes the learning process more relatable and amusing.
Effective humor also helps the students to feel more comfortable in the classroom, grasp what is
being taught with their full attention and also helps the teacher to build a good image as an
beacon house in case of any difficult task.

Welcome the growth mindset: Mere focusing on grades or innate abilities often leads to
boredom and it ultimately results in an ill-mannered and an unruly classroom. Whereas,
encouraging the students’ growth mindset, praising their efforts, valuing their determination
would build a healthy and active classroom environment.
“A growth mindset is one in which the students are willing to think out of the box”.
A teacher should let their students realize that failures and mistakes are not to be regretted, rather
they are opportunities to learn and grow further.

Setting positive reinforcements: A positive reinforcement promotes strong classroom

culture. It is a powerful strategy in classroom management that involves acknowledging and
rewarding the students for exhibiting desirable behavior. These can be intrinsic as well as
extrinsic.
 Giving verbal praise to the students.
 Giving small tangible rewards. (small prize, stickers, candy etc)
 Implementing point system. (good behavior = positive point and vice versa)
 Recognition publically. (in front of the students)

(b) Classroom Ergonomics: Ergonomics is the process of designing or arranging workplaces,

products and systems so that they fit the people who use them. Classroom Ergonomics act latently in the
effective management of the classroom.

Classroom Décor: Decorating the classroom in a way that promotes a positive

atmosphere enhances the productivity. It includes
 Using of vibrant wall colors.
 Decorations.
 Displaying students work.
 Educational Poster.
 Thematic decorations aligning with the curriculum.
 Adequate lighting.
Seating Arrangement: The physical layout of the classroom plays a crucial role in shaping the
learning experience and can significantly impact the overall atmosphere. An organized classroom
layout fosters a positive environment by promoting interaction, engagement and a sense of
community amongst the students. There are some of the renowned seating arrangements which
can be used in a classroom.
 Desk clusters / pods arrangement. (arranging desks in a small cluster or pods)
 U-shaped or Circular arrangement.
 Flexible Seating arrangement. (standing desks, bean bags etc)

Teacher’s proximity and movement: Teacher acts as the nucleus of the classroom. If he / she
understand her own importance it can help them to aid in classroom management.
 Standing in problem prone location of classroom. (near students who have
behavioral problems and where problems typically occur)
 Avoid being static in classroom.
 Placing desks closer to rostrum.
 Praise, reprimands students while standing close to them.
 Monitor your movement patterns to ensure you walk around the room in
unpredictable ways.

Designated Areas: Discipline also assists in boosting the classroom managerial skills.
An organized workplace / classroom often have ill-disciplined cases. This can be ensured by
making the class room organized. Designated areas such as reading corner, arts and crafts
corner, project workstations or discussion zones would help in managing the classroom
efficiently.

(c) Inter personal Skills: These skills act as the lynchpin between the students and teacher.
These set of skills can be targeted by the following methods

Building positive relationships: Students always look upon their teachers as selfless abode of
love and affection. Fostering positive intrapersonal relationships amongst students themselves
and between the students and directress would enhance the classroom environment in general
and class input in particular. Some of the techniques to boost positive relationship are
 Encouraging an open communication.
 Listening actively to the students.
 Talking with students about their topics of interest.
 Sharing own interests and stories.
 Greeting each student by their name.
 Letting them perform those activities in which they excel.
 Displaying kindness.
 Recognizing their special events such as birthdays.
 Using an icebreaker session.
Create a emotionally safe classroom: Classrooms should be physically and
emotionally safe for all students. A directress must herself, as well as from her student ensure
respect for the diverse values and the cultural differences of students. Students must feel like
home once they are in the classroom and act as per their nature rather than being diverted from
the real cause and trying to imitate and camouflage their differences. An emotionally safe student
feels more comfortable in classroom which increase the performance manifolds.

Engage & encourage collaboration: Class room management is a very short lived goal, yet,
besides good class room management engaging students in group activity also helps them learn
valuable set of rules which are useful in later stages of their life. Generally, fostering
collaboration and teamwork amongst students yields a positive feedback, active participation and
attentive listening. It also provides them opportunities to make choices and take ownership.
Encouraging students to take their responsibility often shows a positive spike in taking care of
their counterparts / group members also. Assigning group projects or activities makes them work
together toward a common goal.

(d) Teaching Methodology: Lastly, teaching methodology has a significant role in fostering
classroom into a well-managed and well organized environment. Some of the points are worth
considering in order achieving positive input from the class.

 Varied instructional technique: The teacher must incorporate variety of

teaching methodologies to cater for different learning styles. This keeps the students engaged and
excited about the learning process.

 Relevance to real life: Students must find some resemblance and relatedness. Lessons
which are related to real life make the content more meaningful and applicable. Connecting
classroom material to the student’s life can increase their enthusiasm and interest.

 Use of Technology: Teacher must integrate technology where and when applicable.
Interactive tools and modern day gadgetry can make the lessons more engaging and dynamic.

 Visible and Accessible: Teacher must ensure that she is visible and
accessible to students. This visibility promotes a sense of openness and approachability which
fosters teacher-student relationship. Likewise, teaching aids like whiteboards, display charts
should be placed on some central location. This allows for easy visibility and active participation
of every student.

 Be open and ensure feedback: Teacher must establish an open

communication channel with their students. They must be encouraged to express their thoughts
and concerns without the fear of being penalized. Contrary, teacher must also provide
constructive feedback to ensure the students’ growth. Constructive criticism must be focused on
improvement and maintenance of a positive learning environment.
