CHAPTER 1 Introduction
Intended Audience
This guide is intended for Ixia license administrators who are responsible for license activation,
deactivation and management.
In IxLicensing 5.20, Ixia introduces a new license management system. Ixia Licensing Utility
(ILU) and License Server Plus (LS+) replace Ixia Registration Utility (IRU) and License
Server (LS) used in earlier versions of IxLicensing. Offline activation and deactivation are available
now.

The different license management functions are covered in the following chapters:

l Licensing Scenarios on page 7: Describes the four licensing scenarios possible under the Ixia
license management system.
l Installing Ixia Licensing Utility on page 11: Explains the process for installing Ixia Licensing
Utility.
l Ixia Licensing Utility on page 13: Describes the options available in the graphical user interface.
l IRU to ILU Migration on page 19: Explains the migration and re-hosting processes as a result of
changes in the Ixia licensing system.
l Activate Licenses on page 25: Explains the process for activating a license on a chassis, a
workstation or a license server.
l Deactivate Licenses on page 33: Explains the process for deactivating a license from a chassis, a
workstation or a license server.
l Sync Licenses: Explains the process of syncing licenses from a chassis, a workstation or a license
server.
l Overview of Offline Activation/Deactivation on page 37: Explains the offline process for
activating/deactivating a license using a license file.
l Tools on page 43: Describes the usage of the Diagnostics tool included in Ixia Licensing Utility.
l License Management Planning Guide on page 47: Provides some background and helpful
information to prepare a test environment for license management.
l Ixia Licensing Utility Errors and Troubleshooting on page 49: Provides some basic
troubleshooting information for license activation, as well as a list of errors and their meanings.

About Licensing
By using Ixia’s license management mechanism, you can:

–1–
Chapter 1 Introduction

l Centralize and monitor your software usage.

l Maintain an accurate license inventory.
l Smoothly transfer licenses across different hosts and teams.

The Activation Code for the purchased Ixia product(s) is sent in an e-mail message, when you
purchase an Ixia software. Enter this Activation Code in Ixia Licensing Utility to generate a license.
For the licensed software to work properly, licenses must be activated. License activation for an Ixia
product can be done after the software installation but must be done before the software usage.

The licensing operation is done with a simple wizard and can be run in the following ways:

l The same computer on which the software was installed

l Some other Windows-based computer with the following minimum system requirements:
n Microsoft® Windows ® 7 and later

n 1 Ghz or higher processor

n 512 MB of RAM
n 950 MB of free hard drive space (x86)
n 2.1 GB of free hard drive space (x64)

The computer used to perform the licensing process must be connected to the Ixia chassis and to
workstations in the lab environment. If at all possible, it should also be connected to the Internet. If
simultaneous connections to the lab network and Internet are not feasible, it is still possible to
complete all licensing operations. The offline activation and deactivation processes are covered in
Overview of Offline Activation/Deactivation on page 37.

Types of Licenses
Ixia provides the following types of licenses for its products:

l Node-Locked Licenses below

l Floating Licenses below
l Evaluation Licenses on the facing page

Node-Locked Licenses
Node-locked licenses are locked to a particular chassis or workstation and allow only certain product
functions to run on that chassis or workstation.

Floating Licenses
Floating licenses are stored on a license server and allow a set number of chassis or workstations to
use product software features. All chassis or workstations that use this type of license must be
connected to the license server and the server must be up and running. Once the set number of users
is reached for that particular feature, additional users for the product features are denied.

Note: You can mix both node-locked and floating licenses to get the best solution according to
your testing environment.

–2–
Chapter 1 Introduction

Evaluation Licenses
Evaluation licenses evaluate Ixia products. Except for a time limit, they act in all respects as a regular
license (must be activated using ILU).

Licensing Models
Ixia provides the following licensing models for its products:

l Subscription Licenses below

l Perpetual Licenses below

Subscription Licenses
Subscription licenses are floating and limited licenses, stored on a license server. They are checked
out from the defined license servers and allow only a limited number of licenses to be used
concurrently.

Note: For specific details on subscription licenses, please refer to the documentation of your
product of interest.

Perpetual Licenses
Perpetual licenses are node-locked licenses, stored on a chassis. They are checked out from the
individual chassis and cannot be installed on a different license server.

Note: For specific details on perpetual licenses, please refer to the documentation of your
product of interest.

Prerequisites
Before activating a license, you must have the following:

l The e-mail message from Ixia with the activation code. The key contents of this e-mail message
are as follows:
n Activation Code: A unique number for the license.
n Quantity: The number of licenses.
n Effective Date: The date from which the license can be activated.
n Expiration Date: The date on which the license will expire.

List of Terms
The following list defines some of the frequently used terms in this manual that refer to licensing.

Activation
The process of binding an activation of a license to a license server and generating licenses, that
allows the features included in the entitlement to be checked out from the specific license server. Once

–3–
Chapter 1 Introduction

a number of an entitlement is assigned to a license server, it cannot be assigned to any other license
server without a prior deactivation. An entitlement quantity can be split up between several license
servers.

Example: if a user has an entitlement of ten quantities for a feature, they can assign four quantities to
license server 1, one quantity to license server 2, three quantities to license server 3 and still have
two quantities available to assign to another license server.

Activation is done using Ixia Licensing Utility (ILU).

Activation Code
A combination of number and alphabets assigned to a license by the Ixia activation server and sent in
an e-mail message.

Chassis
An Ixia chassis containing a card frame card modules are plugged into. A chassis also contains an Intel
processor (or equivalent), a disk and a network adapter.

Deactivation
The process of removing licenses and unbinding the specific entitlement from the license server. The
user can assign this available entitlement to a different host.

Deactivation is done using Ixia Licensing Utility (ILU).

Entitlement
Entitlement is a right to a product or feature that is generated when you purchase an Ixia product. The
activation code of each entitlement is sent in an e-mail message.

Floating License
A floating license is a type of license that resides on a license server and allows multiple
workstations/chassis to use the product or software associated with the license. A floating license is
node-locked to the license server.

Installation Host

The installation host is the workstation or chassis used to activate and deactivate licenses. The
installation host must be connected to the chassis or workstation that uses the licensed product or
software (it can also be the same chassis or workstation that uses the licensed product or software).
Ixia Licensing Utility (ILU) must be installed on this computer.

Ixia License Administrator

The person responsible for managing the Ixia licenses at the client side. This person will have the
rights and responsibility to update, activate and deactivate Ixia licenses.

–4–
Chapter 1 Introduction

Ixia Licensing Utility (ILU)

Ixia Licensing Utility (ILU) is used to activate, deactivate, update and manage licenses. It is installed
and run from the installation host.

License
Licenses are the official permission from Ixia to use specified products or software for a specific number
of machines.

License Server
A license server is a workstation or chassis that distributes licenses to a group of machines. License
servers can monitor node-locked or floating licenses.

Migration
The procedure of migrating all the entitlement rights from the old back-end system (IxLicensing) to the
new back-end system (FNOOD) for a particular license server.

Node ID
An ID number assigned to a chassis or workstation by Ixia Licensing Utility (ILU) for identification
purposes.

Node-Locked License
Node-locked licenses are licenses anchored to a specific chassis or workstation. The products or
software controlled by such licenses can only be used on one chassis or workstation at a time.

Online
If the installation host is connected to the Internet (and can reach the Ixia activation server) while
activating or deactivating a license, the installation host is considered to be online.

Online Host
The chassis or workstation used to connect to the Ixia activation server (through the Internet) when
activating or deactivating a license from an installation host.

CHAPTER 2 Licensing Scenarios
There are four possible licensing scenarios, described in the following sections:

l Licensing to a Chassis or Workstation via the Internet below

l Licensing to a License Server via the Internet on the next page
l Licensing to a Chassis or Workstation without the Internet on the next page
l Licensing to a License Server without the Internet on page 9

Licensing to a Chassis or Workstation via the Internet

In this case, the installation host is connected to the Internet and licenses are installed on the
workstation or Ixia chassis to which the license pertains (the workstation and the installation host can
be the same machine). The installation host must also be connected to the workstation/chassis (if they
are not the same machine).

The figure below shows licensing to a chassis or workstation via the Internet.

–7–
Chapter 2 Licensing Scenarios

Licensing to a License Server via the Internet

In this case, the installation host is connected to the Internet and licenses are installed on a central
license server (the license server and the installation host can be the same machine). The installation
host must also be connected to the license server and the workstation/chassis (if the license server
and the installation host are not the same machine).

The figure below shows licensing to a license server via the Internet.

Licensing to a Chassis or Workstation without the

Internet
In this case, the installation host is not connected to the Internet and licenses are installed on the
workstation or Ixia chassis to which the license pertains (the workstation and the installation host can
be the same machine). The installation host must also be connected to the workstation/chassis (if they
are not the same machine).

–8–
Chapter 2 Licensing Scenarios

In order to complete the installation process, an additional computer is necessary – an online host, as
shown in the figure below. This machine must be connected to the Internet. It is necessary to transfer
small amounts of information from the online host to the installation host to complete the process. E-
mail or a portable USB drive may be appropriate.

The figure below shows licensing to a chassis or workstation disconnected from the Internet.

Licensing to a License Server without the Internet

In this case, the installation host is not connected to the Internet and licenses are installed on a
license server (the license server and the installation host can be the same machine). The installation
host must also be connected to the license server and the workstation/chassis (if the license server
and the installation host are not the same machine).

In order to complete the installation process, an additional computer is necessary – an online host –
shown in the figure below. This machine must be connected to the Internet. It is necessary to transfer
small amounts of information between the online host and the installation host to complete the
process. E-mail or a portable USB drive may be appropriate.

The figure below shows licensing to a license server disconnected from the Internet.

APPENDIX A License Management Planning
Guide
Introduction
This appendix provides information required to help determine how licenses are activated and used.

Licensing Activation Overview

The steps in this process are as follows:

1. The purchasing agent orders licenses for software.

2. Ixia sends an e-mail message containing the license activation code.
3. The Ixia license administrator installs the Ixia software.
4. The Ixia license administrator activates the license using the e-mail message received from Ixia.

It is important that the purchasing agent provides the Ixia license administrator’s e-mail address so
that the e-mail message containing the license activation code reaches the correct person.

Checklist
The following table shows a checklist to enable the Ixia license administrator to successfully install
and use the ILU:

APPENDIX B Ixia Licensing Utility Errors and
Troubleshooting
This appendix provides basic licensing troubleshooting information and lists various errors that can
occur during the activation, deactivation or update processes.

The following sections cover the troubleshooting and error messages for licensing:

l General Problems and Troubleshooting below

l Error Messages on page 51

General Problems and Troubleshooting

The following sections outline some common issues you may encounter when working with the Ixia
licensing software. This section is not meant to be all inclusive.

Licensing Services
After the license is activated, the license server and Node ID generation run as Windows services. If
there are any licensing problems while using the product, first verify if the license service Ixia
nodedv3 is running.

The following table lists the ports and services used by the licensing infrastructure.

Installed Services

Service Name Ports used

Ixia nodedv3 4501, 8890, and 443

License Not Found Error

Most Ixia products require a license to function. When a valid license cannot be found, the licensing
software generates an error message.

If you get an error message, do the following:

1. Open a command window using the Start menu.

2. When prompted, enter the following command:
netstat -an.

– 49 –
Appendix B Ixia Licensing Utility Errors and Troubleshooting

3. Check if ports 4501, 8890 and 27000–27009 are in a LISTENING state. If not, investigate if these
ports are blocked on the chassis, the computer or in the network along the traffic path.
4. If the code text is returned, the port is open. If an error page is returned, the port is blocked.
5. Set the chassis IP as an exception for the proxy server.

Other common causes can be:

l Changing the chassis name (the default is the SN). In this case, change the name of the
chassis back to the name that the license was activated with.
l Manually moving the license from one node to another. A forced deactivation (performed
by Ixia technical support) may be required if the license on the node does not match the one in
the Ixia License Database.
l Changing the system date. As many files have a timestamp changed by the system, changing
the date back will not resolve the problem. Often the solution requires all the changed files to be
manually updated with the correct date. In case the number of files exceeds the allowed time, the
only resolution is to reformat the hard drive. For a chassis, this requires a ‘ghosting’ procedure.
For a computer, the customer must use another computer or have the IT department reformat the
hard drive.

Confirmation Code Lost

Consider a scenario where you have purchased a single activation code with some license quantities.
While performing offline deactivation for all quantities in a single stroke, if you lose the Confirmation
Code, then there is no synchronization between the license server and the Ixia Licensing web servers.
Ixia Licensing Utility (ILU) removes all the licenses as soon as you select Finish after importing the
license file, whereas the Ixia Licensing web servers needs the Confirmation Code to complete the
offline deactivation process. As there is no license available, you may feel that the process is caught
between ILU and Ixia Licensing web servers and synchronization is lost.

In such a scenario, open the Ixia Licensing web servers in a new window and perform the Offline
Activation process. Activating the licenses again will list all the available licenses in ILU.

Sync after Partial Migration

There can be a scenario when a migration is partially successful. For example, a migration can be
partially successful if the data is not retrieved from FNOOD. In such a case, select Sync on the ILU
application to retrieve the those licenses. For more information, see Sync Licenses.

Restart Services
A migration can fail in case any of the services stops working. You can restart the host to restart all the
services which have stopped.

You can run the troubleshooting feature in diagnostics to check if all the services are running or not. Th
system shows the results and you can take actions accordingly. For more information see, Licensing
Utility Tools.
