BCEE 2202 THEORY OF STRUCTURES (STATICS AND DYNAMICS) (3 CU)
Assignment 2
Instructions
● This is a group assignment and you are expected to work in the three groups
that were created
● Assignment submission must be done by one of the group members and must
include names and signatures of all the group participants
● Attachment of wrong file during Submission leads to cancellation of your
submission.
● Clearly show all your working in all numbers
● All submissions must be done by 19th November 2023
● All submissions must be done on Moodle/eLearning platform
Question 1
The following are the four basic types of structures that form part of a structural
system: Trusses, Cables, Arches, Frames, and Surface structures.
a) Locate places where each of the above structures are found and take clear
photographs (the camera photo must show the time and date of photograph
shooting).
b) Write a brief description of the structural systems where the given structure is
found?
c) Give reason(s) why each of the named structures are used in the particular
location identified?
d) What challenges have you identified to be associated with the usage of the
particular structures at the locations identified?
Question 2
yB
a) The cable supports the three loads shown in Figure (1a). Determine the sags
yD
and of points of B and D.
Figure (1a)
b) Determine reaction components at A and B, tension in the cable and the sag
yB yD
and of the cable shown in Figure (1b). Neglect the self – weight of the
cable in the analysis.
Fig 1(b)
c) A cable of uniform cross-section is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of
25 kN/m and spans a distance of 60 m as shown in Fig 1(c). The left support is
below the right support by 4 m and the lowest point on the cable C is located
below left support by 2m. Evaluate the reactions and the maximum and
minimum values of tension in the cable.
Fig 1(c)
d) A three-hinged parabolic arch of uniform cross section has a span of 30 m and a
rise of 15 m. It is subjected to a point load of intensity 40 KN at point D as
shown in Fig (1 d). Calculate the location and magnitude of maximum bending
moment in the arch.
