REFLECTIVE JOURNAL
Introduction
What is Reflective Learning Journal?
It is a piece of writing which allows students to record thoughts and insights about their own
learning experience. It encourages students to review and consolidate learning, to evaluate
performance, to plan future learning based on past learning experience. In such a way,
students become capable to take charge of their own learning, and eventually to develop into
independent lifelong learners.
In teacher education, reflective journal writing is viewed as a learning tool that bridges the
gap between new and existing information. A sustained reflective practice and journal writing
builds the capacity of the pre-service teacher and equips them with desirable pedagogical
skills and knowledge.
All the student teachers shall write reflections with respect to academic development,
professional development and personal development or any other. Reflective journal writing
trajectory begins from day one of the course till the last day of the course. All the experiences
based reflections to be reported as per the proforma given. Student teachers shall record all
the experiences related to classroom teaching, learning in the college, at school during
teaching practice program activities in which they are engaged in the classrooms, outside the
classrooms, library, playfield, on field experiences etc.,
How to Reflect?
One common model is the Gibbs Reflective Cycle, which has 6 parts
Describe Describe what happened
Feelings How did it make you feel?
Evaluate What was good or bad?
Analyse What sense can you make of the situation? (Include external issues)
Conclude What general and specific conclusions can you draw?
Action What next, or what will you do next time?
Reflective Journal Features :
Reflective journaling typically involves regularly writing down thoughts and
reflections about experiences or events, including what was learned, how the
experience affected the writer, and what the writer could do differently in the future.
The writing can be in any format, including freeform prose, lists, or bullet points, and
can include images, sketches, or other visual aids.
Reflective journaling is often used in education and training settings, such as in
teacher training programs, to help students and professionals develop their critical
thinking and self-awareness skills.
It can also be used as a therapeutic tool to help individuals process and cope with
difficult emotions or experiences.
Reflective Journal in Teaching :
It is a valuable tool for teachers to engage in self-reflection and professional development. By
regularly writing down their thoughts and reflections about their teaching experiences,
teachers can gain a deeper understanding of their own teaching practices, strengths, and areas
for improvement.
Reflective journaling can be used in a variety of ways in teaching, including:
Planning and preparation: Teachers can use reflective journaling to plan and prepare
for their lessons. By reflecting on their previous lessons and experiences, teachers can
identify areas where they need to focus their attention and plan strategies to address
them.
Assessment and evaluation: Teachers can use reflective journaling to assess and
evaluate their own teaching practices. They can reflect on their lesson plans,
instructional strategies, and student engagement, and use this information to identify
areas for improvement and adjust their teaching accordingly.
Professional development: Reflective journaling can be used as a tool for professional
development. Teachers can reflect on their own teaching practices and identify areas
where they need to improve their skills or knowledge. They can then seek out
resources and opportunities for professional development to address these areas.
Feedback and collaboration: Teachers can also use reflective journaling as a tool for
giving and receiving feedback and collaborating with colleagues. By sharing their
reflections with others, teachers can gain insights and perspectives from others and
work together to improve their teaching practices.
Overall, reflective journaling can help teachers develop their self-awareness, critical thinking,
and professional skills, leading to improved teaching practices and better outcomes for their
students.

Being an introvert, I found it difficult to mingle with many students, thankfully ended
up making two good friends. It was difficult to process the entire information within
limited time. It was due to my sheer hesitation that I couldn’t reach the dais to express
my expectations, when asked.
4.Analyse :What sense can you make of situation
The inaugural function and induction programme could be split into 3 days to avoid too much of
information in one go. A short break between inaugural function and induction, could keep the
attention and interest sustain for a longer duration. The programme commenced and concluded
late. It was needed to explain the feedback form to be filled at the end of the session.

The idea of the purpose of schooling can also be seen as a person's philosophy of schooling.
Philosophy can be defined as the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence. In the
case of education, one's philosophy is what one believes to be true about the essentials of
education.
Focus on the great ideas of Western civilization, viewed as of enduring value. Focus on developing
intellect and cultural literacy. Also called a classical curriculum.
Focus on teaching a common core of knowledge, including basic literacy and morality. Believes
schools should not try to critique or change society, but rather transmit essential understandings.
Focus on the whole child as the experimenter and independent thinker. Believes active experience
leads to questioning and problem solving. Approaches textbooks as tools instead of authoritarian
sources of knowledge.
Focus on developing important social questions by critically examining society. Recognizes
influence of social, economic, and political systems. Believes schools can lead to collaborative
change to develop a better society and enhance social justice.

more meaningful learning from examination point of view.

Assessment is the process of gathering information about student learning and performance.
Evaluation is the process of interpreting that information and making judgments about what has
been learned. Measurement is assigning numbers to represent how much of a particular quality a
student has demonstrated.
3.Evaluate: what is good or bad
The concepts of measurement, assessment, and evaluation can lead to misunderstandings in
teaching and learning when they are not clearly defined or when their purposes are confused.
Measurement involves assigning numbers to objects or events, assessment is the process of
gathering information, and evaluation is the interpretation and judgment of that information.
Misunderstandings may arise if these terms are used interchangeably or if assessments are solely
focused on quantifiable aspects, neglecting qualitative factors. Overemphasis on standardized
testing can also limit a holistic understanding of a student's abilities. Additionally, misalignment
between assessment methods and learning objectives may hinder accurate evaluation of
educational outcomes.
