1. Overview

A. Overview
The Air Data/Inertial Reference System (ADIRS) is the navigation center of the aircraft.
This system operates independently of the ground navigation aids.

2. Function/Description

A. System Description

(1) System architecture

Ref. Fig. ADIRS - System Architecture - Clock Function - Aircraft Position Function
The function of the ADIRS is to calculate the air and inertial data, the aircraft
position and the time reference, and to send the calculated data to the aircraft
systems.
To do this function, the ADIRS has three Air Data/Inertial Reference Units
(ADIRU).
Each ADIRU includes the software components that follow:
- The ADIRU core
- The ADIRU configuration table
- The ADIRU applications
- The ADIRU A/C type dependent-table
- The ADIRU A/C type independent-table
- The ADIRU MSN dependent-table.

Each ADIRU has:

- One Air Data Reference (ADR) part that uses the input from the probe and
the sensor to calculate the air data.
- One Inertial Reference (IR) part that calculates the inertial data.
- A clock function that uses the Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR) and the Flight
Management System (FMS) data to calculate the aircraft time reference.
- An aircraft position function that uses the MMR and the FMS data to
calculate the aircraft position (latitude and longitude).

ON A/C MSN 0293 (PRE SB 34-P020)

(2) ADR part
Ref. Fig. ADIRS - ADR Part - IR Part
The ADR part of each ADIRU receives the air data from:
- One MultiFunction Probe (MFP)
- One left static probe and one right static probe
- One Side Slip Angle (SSA) probe
- One Outside Air Temperature (OAT) sensor (OAT sensor 1 is connected to
ADIRU1 and OAT sensor 2 is connected to ADIRU2 and ADIRU3)
- One Angle Of Attack (AOA) probe (connected to ADIRU1 only).
The ADR part then calculates the data that follow:
- The static pressure and the total pressure
- The OAT and the Total Air Temperature (TAT):
The OAT sensors send the measurements with an analog link to the
ADIRUs. The ADIRUs use the TAT data from the MFPs in flight condition
and the OAT data from the OAT sensors in ground condition (during the
takeoff when the ground speed is between zero knots and 130 knots and
after the landing when the ground speed is less than 80 knots).
- The air speed, the Vertical Speed (V/S) and the Mach number
- The standard altitude and the barometric altitude
- The AOA and the SSA.
NOTE: Each ADIRU receives the AOA data from its side MFP. ADIRU1
does not receive the AOA data from the AOA probe. The AOA
probe sends the AOA data to PRIM1 and PRIM3.

Each MFP, SSA, AOA and static probe is connected with the Aeronautical Radio
Incorporated (ARINC) 429 buses to its related ADIRU for these functions:
- Data transmission
- Probe test request and results
- Fault transmission
- Probe heating.
Each MFP, SSA, AOA and static probe is connected with a discrete link to the
PROBE & WINDOW HEAT pushbutton switch for heating on the ground.
The ADR part is also connected with a discrete link to the L/G DOWN VMO/MMO
SELECTION selector switch to select the applicable maximum operating speed or
maximum operating mach-values.

ON A/C MSN ALL
(3) IR part
Ref. Fig. ADIRS - ADR Part - IR Part
The IR part operates independently.
The inertial data is received from the internal accelerometers and the gyrometers
that record all the aircraft movements. The IR part uses this data to calculate:
- The navigation data: aircraft position, ground speed, velocity and
acceleration
- The attitude data: pitch angle, roll angle, pitch and roll rotation rate, pitch
and roll rotation acceleration
- The heading data: magnetic and true headings, yaw rotation rate and
acceleration.
The IR part also receives the Global Positioning System (GPS) data from the
MMR. The IR part uses the pure data and the GPS data from the MMR to calculate
the hybrid Global Positioning and Inertial Reference System (GPIRS) aircraft-
position.

(4) Clock function

Ref. Fig. ADIRS - System Architecture - Clock Function - Aircraft Position Function
The clock function of each ADIRU gives the Universal Time Coordinated (UTC)
time and date to the aircraft systems.
To start the clock function, the ADIRUs use:
- The GPS data from the MMR, or
- The FMS data that the pilot enters when the GPS data is not available.

(5) Aircraft position function

Ref. Fig. ADIRS - System Architecture - Clock Function - Aircraft Position Function
Each ADIRU receives the aircraft position data from the MMR and the FMS.
They send the GPIRS aircraft position calculated by the IR part to the aircraft
systems.
If the GPS data is not available, the ADIRUs send the FMS aircraft position.
If the FMS data is not available, the ADIRUs send the pure IR-position data.

(1) Interface with the AIR DATA selector switch and the CDS
Ref. Fig. ADIRS - Interface with the AIR DATA Selector Switch and the CDS
Each ADIRU sends the air and inertial data with the Avionics Full Duplex Switched
Ethernet (AFDX) network to each Display Unit (DU) of the CDS.
As a backup solution, ADIRU1(ADIRU2) also sends these data with an ARINC 429
bus to the CAPT and F/O outer and inner DUs.
The AIR DATA selector switch transmits the selected data source (ADR1 or ADR3,
IR1 or IR3, ADR2 or ADR3, IR2 or IR3) to the CDS DUs with the Common Remote
Data Concentrators (CRDC) and the AFDX network. Then, the CDS DUs calculate
and show the data related to the selected ADR and IR parts. The center, upper
and lower DUs transmit the air and inertial data to the Head-Up Display (HUD)
(optional).

(2) Interface with the PRIMs, SECs, FCDC, FCUs and FCU backup function
Ref. Fig. ADIRS - Interface with the PRIMs, SECs, FCDC, FCUs and FCU Backup
Function

(a) PRIMs, SECs and FCDC

Each ADIRU sends the air and inertial data with the ARINC 429 buses to
the PRIMs and SECs for the calculation of the flight control laws (manual
and automatic) and for the selection of the flight envelope.
The AIR DATA selector switch transmits the selected ADR and IR data
source with the discrete links to the PRIMs. The PRIMs use data from the
same ADR and IR parts as the CDS DUs. The AIR DATA selector switch
transmits the selected data source to the SECs and to the FCDC.
Each ADIRU sends the air data with the AFDX network to the WBBC
function (in the FCDC application) to calculate the backup aircraft weight
and the center of gravity.
The three MFPs and the AOA probe send the AOA data with an ARINC 429

https://w3.airbus.com/1T40/document/520424_S1KD_C/toc?itemId=…E&wc=actype:A350;customization:EVE;doctype:Line%20Maintenance Página 7 de 61

bus to two of the three PRIMs, for the gust-load alleviation function. PRIM3
sends a discrete signal to the AOA probe for the automatic heating
command.

(b) FCUs and FCU backup function

Each ADIRU receives the manual selection of the barometric setting
reference and the barometric correction to calculate the barometric
corrected altitude from:
- The two FCUs with an ARINC 429 bus
- The FCU backup function with the AFDX network.

(3) Interface with the FWS, FMS, ATC system, BAS, OHDS and WIPS
Ref. Fig. ADIRS - Interface with the FWS, FMS, ATC System, BAS, OHDS and
WIPS

(a) FWS
The FWS sends the flight phase data with the AFDX network to each
ADIRU.
Each ADIRU sends the ADR and IR data with the AFDX network to the
FWS. The FWS uses these data to calculate the serviceable alerts when the
ADIRS does not operate correctly.
The AIR DATA selector switch transmits the selected data source (related
ADR and IR parts) to the FWS for the data reconfiguration, with the CRDCs
and the AFDX network.

(b) FMS
Each Flight Management Computer (FMC) sends the data that follow to the
three ADIRUs:
- The FMS aircraft position (mixed IRS/radio position) to calculate the
aircraft position solution when no GPS data is available and for the
IR alignment
- The clock parameters when the flight crew sets the clock manually.
Each ADIRU sends the data that follow to the FMS for the flight
management function with the AFDX network:
- The ADR and IR data
- The aircraft position
- The clock parameters
- The IR alignment result.

(c) ATC system

Each ADIRU sends the aircraft position and the clock parameters with the
AFDX network to the ATC system for the Automatic Dependent
Surveillance – Contract (ADS-C) function (as a backup source of the FMS).

(d) BAS
ADIRU1 and ADIRU3 send the standard altitude and the Static Air
Temperature (SAT) data to the BAS with the AFDX network. The BAS uses
these data to calculate the thermodynamic data.

(e) OHDS
ADIRU1 and ADIRU3 send the Calibrated Air Speed (CAS) with the AFDX
network to the OHDS to confirm the flight/ground status.

(f) WIPS
Each ADIRU sends its status and the air data (standard altitude, True
Airspeed (TAS), TAT, static pressure) with the AFDX network to the WIPS
CONTROL application for the operation and control of the wing ice
protection. ADIRU1 and ADIRU3 send the same data with an ARINC 429
bus to the related Bleed and Overheat Monitoring Unit (BOMU) (BOMU1 for
ADIRU1 and BOMU2 for ADIRU3) for the WIPS MONITOR application.

(4) Interface with the MMRs

Ref. Fig. ADIRS - Interface with the MMRs
Each MMR sends the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data with an
ARINC 429 bus to each ADIRU. It also sends the related time mark with an
analog link.
Each ADIRU sends the IR data (correct aircraft position (latitude and longitude),
current aircraft attitude and speed) with an ARINC 429 bus to each MMR.
Each ADIRU directly sends the aircraft position to port A of each MMR, with the
CRDCs and the AFDX network. It also sends it with the two Radio and Audio
Management Panels (RMP) to port B of each MMR, with the CRDCs and the AFDX
network.

(5) Interface with the RAs and the LGERS

Ref. Fig. ADIRS - Interface with the RAs and the LGERS

(a) RA
The three RAs send the radio height data to each ADIRU to make the
airspeed calculation better during the takeoff and landing phases. They
send the data with the ARINC 429 buses, the CRDCs and the AFDX
network.

(b) LGERS
The LGERS sends the ground or flight condition and the gear and door data
with the AFDX network to the three ADIRUs. The ADIRUs use these data to
correct the landing gear effect on the airflow for the static pressure
measurement.
Each ADIRU also sends the overspeed warning data with the AFDX network
to the LGERS. The LGERS uses this data to prevent the extension and
retraction function when the aircraft airspeed is more than 280 knots.

1 OFF position
When the pilot sets one selector switch to OFF, the related ADIRU is
not supplied with power and the ADR and IR data are not available.

2 NAV position
When the pilot sets one selector switch to NAV, the related ADIRU is
in the normal mode of operation. In this mode, the IR part of the
ADIRU starts the alignment phase to calculate the attitude, velocity
and position. The alignment is possible on the ground only, when
the aircraft does not move. At the end of the alignment phase, the
ADIRU sends the UTC time and date, aircraft position, air data and
inertial data to the aircraft systems and to the displays that follow:

3 ATT position
When the pilot sets one selector switch to ATT, the IR part of the
related ADIRU sends the heading and attitude data to the aircraft
systems (the crew must enter the heading data). The attitude mode
is a degraded mode with a decreased performance of the attitude
and heading parameters.

(b) ADR and IR pushbutton switches

Ref. Fig. ADIRS - ADIRS Control Panel (Backup Speed Scale on the PFD)
Each ADR and IR pushbutton switch is used to stop the transmission of the
ADR or IR data to the aircraft systems. When the internal monitoring of an
ADIRU finds incorrect ADR or IR data, the FAULT legend of the ADR or IR
pushbutton switch related to the ADIRU comes on. To stop the
transmission of the ADR or IR data to the AFDX network, the pilot pushes
the pushbutton switch (the OFF legend comes on). The ADIRU continues to
calculate the ADR or IR data, but does not transmit them to the aircraft
systems.

passengers), the pilot sets the selector switch to the L/G DOWN position. The
ADIRUs then use the lowest values for the VMO/MMO pair.
The “OVERSPEED VMO/MMO” warning message is shown on the Warning Display
(WD) when the CAS and the Mach number are more than the VMO and MMO
values.

6. BITE

A. BITE Function
The BITE of the ADIRU:
- Makes an analysis of the monitoring and test results
- Generates the related fault messages
- Sends these fault messages to the CMS and memorizes them
- Communicates with the CMS to start interactive tests.
