Fabric Consumption| Different method &
formula use for calculating knit fabric
consumption
Introduction: Consumption of fabric is defined as the average meter(s) (or kgs for
knits) of fabric needed to make the garment. Fabric consumption is the most important
factor in pricing a garment. So it must be calculated correctly otherwise profit will be
decreased. We calculate fabric consumption by using different methods.
For fabric consumption different types of formula we can be used:
1. Fabric Consumption by Single formula.
2. Fabric Consumption by Individual formula.
3. Fabric Consumption by marker planning formula.
1. Fabric Consumption by Single Formula:
(Body length + Sleeve L. + Allowance) × (Half Chest + Allowance) × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
2. Fabric Consumption by Individual formula:
Body part consumption;
(Body length + Allowance) × (Half Chest + Allowance) × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
Sleeve Consumption;
(Sleeve L. + Allowance) × (Sleeve width × 2 + Allowance) × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
3. Fabric Consumption by marker planning formula:
(Marker width in inch) × (Marker length in inch) × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1550×1000×5
Standard body measurement
We used a short sleeve t-shirt measurement for understanding the difference between fabric
consumption of different methods:
Fabric consumption for ‘‘L’’ size T-shirt:
Body Length: 72 Cm
1/2 Chest: 52 Cm
Sleeve Length: 22 Cm
Sleeve Width: 18 Cm
1. Fabric Consumption by Single Formula Method:
(Body length + Sleeve L. + Allowance) × (Half Chest + Allowance) × 2 × 12 × 160
= ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
(72+22+2) × (52+2) × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
=--------------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
96 × 54 × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= -----------------------------------
100×100×1000
= 2.19 Kg/Dz
2. Fabric Consumption by Individual formula Method:
Body part consumption;
(Body length + Allowance) × (Half Chest + Allowance) × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
(72+2) × (52+2) × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
=----------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
74 × 54 × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= ------------------------------------
100×100×1000
= 1.687 Kg/Dz
Sleeve Consumption;
(Sleeve L. + Allowance) × (Sleeve width × 2 + Allowance) × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
(22+2) × {(18 × 2) +2} × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
=-----------------------------------------------------
100×100×1000
24 × 38 × 2 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= -----------------------------------
100×100×1000
= 0.350 + 0.035
= 0.385 Kg/Dz
Total Consumption:
Body length + Sleeve length
= (1.687 + 0.385) Kg/Dz
= 2.072 Kg/ Dz
3. Fabric Consumption by marker planning formula:
(Marker width in Inch) × (Marker length in Inch) × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1550×1000×5
60 × 180 × 12 × 160 × 1.10
= ----------------------------------
1550 × 1000×5
= 2.943 Kg/Dz
From the above method, we can find different fabric consumption for the same
measurement as a T-shirt. So which method is more efficient for fabric consumption?
From myself, marker planning or individual method is more efficient than the Single
method for calculation.
