DEBT VALIDATION LETTERS
Sent to collectors
Requires collection agency to either validate debt or stop reporting it
Can be risky to send, depending on circumstances
pros and cons
Collector may validate and sue you for debt
Collector has unlimited time to process the request
If account is fairly new and has a high balance, they are likely to sue for
payment
If collector fails to validate, you can file to have the debt removed from
credit report
While the request is being processed, collector is not allowed to:
continue reporting debt to the bureaus
continue collection activities
To determine if a debt validation letter is the right choice for you:
Check your state's statute of limitations
Check the amount of the debt
Check to see how many collectors have owned this particular debt

statutes of limitations
Statutes on debt collections vary by state
Usually 3-6 years
Check your state for details

Check statute of limitations and age of debt to help you make a decision
important tips
Do NOT acknowledge that debt is legitimate
Do NOT make any partial payments
DO dispute the debt but offer a small settlement payment
pay to delete settlement
Any settlement you agree to must include:
Fulfillment of all debt obligations
No further contact from collector
Permanent removal from credit report
