FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

My aim of this essay is to provide necessary information for the foreign language teachers and
learners so that they can establish a good connection with the target language and its culture.

INTRODUCTION
Foreign language learning and teaching have undergone a significant paradigm shift as a result
of the research and experiences that have expanded the scientific and theoretical knowledge
base on how students learn and acquire a foreign language. Traditionally, learning a foreign
language was thought to be a ‘mimetic’ activity, a process that involved students repeating or
imitating new information.

Foreign language teaching and learning have changed from teacher-centered to

learner/learning-centered environments. Relying on language theories, research findings, and
experiences, educators developed teaching strategies and learning environments that engaged
learners in interactive communicative language tasks. A shift in foreign language pedagogy from
a specific foreign language method to the measurement of language performance/competency
has resulted in a change in the role of the teacher from one of authority/expert to that of
facilitator/guide and agent of change.

DEFINITION
Teaching English as a foreign language refers to teaching English to students whose first
language is not English (Chomsky, 1965, np). It usually occurs in the students’ own country,
either within the state school system or private ones, e.g., in an after-hours language school or
with a teacher. As a foreign language, there are so many things that make it quite hard to teach
and, one of them is the exposure. English is a language that must be exposed or practiced many
times. As a foreign language, using English language is a challenge for students because they
cannot use it all the time and in all the places. The other thing is the assumption in the
student’s mind. And they can survive in their environment without mastering it.

Foreign language learning and teaching refer to the teaching or learning of a nonnative
language outside of the environment where it is commonly spoken. A distinction is often made
between ‘foreign’ and ‘second’ language learning. A second language implies that the learner

resides in an environment where the acquired language is spoken. In the area of research, the
term second language acquisition is a general term that embraces foreign language learning
and investigates the human capacity to learn languages other than the first language once it has
been acquired. Scholarly inquiry into the acquisition of a nonnative language includes the
disciplines of psychology, linguistics, language pedagogy, education, neurobiology, sociology,
and anthropology. Inquiries of learning and teaching innovations have provided new insights
into successful language learning strategies and environments designed to increase language
achievement and proficiency.

CHALLENGES
Teaching foreign language may sound similar to any other teaching, and schoolteachers usually
facing a lot of challenges in and out of the classroom in so many different ways, such as:

 Severe lack of training

 Limited access to resources
 Linguistic problems
 Using other languages in the classroom

SOLUTIONS
Solutions to Challenges Facing the Learners of foreign language:

 read the foreign sentences and think about their structure

 learn new words from a dictionary
 write a correct foreign sentence by consulting dictionaries, grammar guides, and the
Web
 practice the pronunciation of foreign sounds and words

EXAMPLES OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

 TV shows, news segments, documentaries, movie clips and trailers, online videos, and
commercials
 Radio broadcasts, songs, and podcasts
 Photographs, artwork, signs, postcards, maps, and advertisements
 Magazines, letters and emails, news articles, brochures, websites, blogs, and social media
posts

EFFECTS
The present study found that mastering a foreign language in a classroom context dramatically
increases the four components of divergent thinking ability, i.e., fluency, elaboration,
originality, and flexibility. People who speak more than one language have improved memory,
problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, enhanced concentration, ability to multitask, and
better listening skills.
