The 61kg category has been dominated since before the last Olympic
Games in 2021 by one man: China’s Li Fabin (pictured).

Since 2019, Li Fabin has been essentially unstoppable, winning three

World championships, three Asian championships, an Olympic Games
and setting four world records along the way. In fact since early in
2019, Li has remained undefeated!

But will anything change?

Behind Li Fabin are some extremely talented youngsters, namely

Hampton Morris (USA) and Sergio Massidda (Italy) as well as the true
veteran of the group, Eko Yuli Irawan (Indonesia).

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Eko Yuli Irawan, who sits in 4th in the Olympic rankings, has won four
Olympic medals in a row and is in the hunt for a fifth, a feat rarer than
winning three Olympic Games. His first medal, a bronze, was in Beijing
at the 2008 Olympic Games, and he has since earned a bronze, and
two silvers in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Though his
performances this quad have been below his best, his tendency to only
take an attempt or two before withdrawing from the competition shows
that the 34-year-old (he’ll be 35 in Paris) is holding something back.

Ahead of Irawan in third is Italy’s Sergio Massidda (pictured), whose

performances over the Olympic quad have improved significantly,
helping him rise from the bottom of the rankings up to, at one point,
second in the world. With some incredible leg strength, if he can make
at least two snatches he should be in the hunt for a medal in Paris.

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
The world number two is currently Hampton Morris (USA) who
demolished the clean and jerk world record at the last-chance Olympic
qualifier in Phuket Thailand last April, moving up from 7th in the world
rankings. His shakier start to this Olympic qualifying procedure saw
him missing lifts, entering and exiting the top 10 seemingly with each
passing competition. Now with his ever-improving snatch, his sights
are set not only on an Olympic medal but also the Olympic clean and
jerk record of 172kg.

Behind the top four are plenty of tremendously strong athletes. Aniq
Kasdan (Malaysia, pictured) has registered his interest in a world
record clean and jerk while Shota Mishvelidze (Georgia) is in his 10th
year of senior international weightlifting.

With the world records all held by current athletes this session looks to
be full of headlines.

Despite China’s Olympic champion from 2020, Hou Zhihui, being the
number one weightlifter in the world going into this Olympic qualifying
procedure, it seemed clear right from their first battle in Colombia
2022 at the World Championships that her teammate, Jiang Huihua
(pictured) was going to be the chosen Chinese athlete this time around.

Jiang Huihua, who narrowly missed out on the Olympic Games last
time to Hou Zhihui, would do everything in her power to climb into that
number one slot. From world record clean and jerks at 120kg to world
record totals at 215kg, Jiang Huihua won both World Championships in
‘22 and ‘23 and remained undefeated.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
However, at the last-chance Olympic qualifier in Thailand back in April
of 2024, Hou Zhihui did the unthinkable: a world record snatch at 97kg
followed by a 120kg clean and jerk, all new personal bests and a ticket
to the Olympic Games. The Olympic champion had defeated her four-
time world champion teammate for the single Chinese ticket.

Sat as the number two ranked weightlifter in the Olympic qualifying
rankings (which includes just one Chinese weightlifter and no North
Koreans) is India’s ex World record holder Mirabai Chanu with a 200kg
total. As she was absent from most competitions, we are unsure of her
abilities heading into Paris. On a good day she’s a medal contender.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Also with 200kg in the total are Jourdan Delacruz (USA) and
Surodchana Khambao (Thailand, pictured). Khambao is the 2021 world
champion but is yet to compete at an Olympic Games.

Jourdan Delacruz (USA) returns for her second Olympic Games.
However, having been one of three in the -49kg category to fail to
make a total at the Tokyo games, her performance in Paris has a whole
new level of importance.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Chasing these top athletes is the European number one, Mihaela
Cambei (Romania, pictured), whose snatching abilities will place her
second to only Hou Zhihui. It’s probable that she will have a lead over
Mirabai, Khambao and Delacruz but will have to perform at her absolute
best in the clean and jerk if she wants to hold onto her small lead.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
These four chasing athletes have all totalled between 199kg and 200kg
and so the battle for silver will be astonishingly tight. Rira Suzuki
(Japan, pictured) also sits just 2kg behind Cambei in the rankings with
197kg. But with Hou Zhui at 217kg in the total she has some of the best
odds to win this Games and become a two-time Olympic champion.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
It is worth mentioning Ri Song-gum, the North Korean -49 who, since
returning to competition with her team back in 2023, has gone on to
become not just the best weightlifter in the -49s but the best female
weightlifter in the world. Her 221kg world record total from earlier this
year is 4kg ahead of Hou Zhihui and 5kg ahead of Jiang Huihua. North
Korea’s late return to the sport in 2023 meant they could not achieve
Olympic eligibility.

Leading the category all the way through the Olympic qualifying period
from the 2022 World Championships to until the final minutes of the
World Cup 2024 was Rahmat Abdullah of Indonesia (pictured). With
almost no competition, he single-handedly increased the world record
from 198kg to 204kg and set the clean and jerk world record in the
-81kg category at 209kg.

Despite his dominance, and with room for only one Indonesian at the
Olympics in this category, his teammate Rizki Juniansyah set the
world on fire in Thailand at the World Cup 2024. Having had appendix
surgery back at the end of August 2023 the two-time junior world
champion returned to competition at the Asian Championships 2024
after a few weeks of training. Though he didn’t defeat Rahmat Abdullah,
he did demonstrate that no one outside of Indonesia could defeat him.

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Two months later, at the World Cup at the last-chance qualifier in
Thailand, Rizki Juniansyah (Indonesia, pictured) had a performance
no other -73kg had ever achieved. After a sensational 164kg snatch,
surpassed only by the returning Olympic champion Shi Zhiyong (China)
who made 165kg, Rizki Juniansyah set a new world record in the total
at 365kg with a 201kg clean and jerk.

Despite his best effort, Rahmat Abdullah was unable to successfully lift
the 206kg clean and jerk he needed. The tables had turned. Despite
leading the category forward for several years, Rahmat Abdullah would
watch his teammate, Rizki Juniansyah compete for gold in Paris.

Shi Zhiyong (China, pictured), world record holder in the snatch and
reigning Olympic champion, is the only Chinese weightlifter competing
at the Paris Olympics who is not the current world number one. The
team of coaches preferred his chances to defeat Rizki Juniansyah over
Li Dayin’s (-89kg) chances of defeating Karlos Nasar (Bulgaria).

Many other remarkable weightlifters will be in the hunt for a medal
in Paris. Two athletes, Bak Joo-hyo (South Korea, pictured top) and
Muhammed Ozbek (Türkiye, pictured right), had to defeat their own
teammates to secure their Olympic spot. Japan’s Masanori Miyamoto
(pictured left) has come on leaps and bounds since the 2020 Olympic
Games and now sits at third in the world.

Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Andreev (pictured right) found a new gear at the
European Championships 2024 in his hometown of Sofia. Though he
sat out from the World Cup in Thailand in April, he did snatch 160kg in
the training hall, a real statement to the line-up. The man he has battled
with so often at the European Championships, Ritvars Suharevs
(Latvia, pictured left), has also found a new gear in recent months.

The women’s 59kg weightlifting category for the Paris Olympics is set
to be an electrifying battle, driven by a mix of seasoned champions and
emerging stars.

2024

At the forefront of the field is Luo Shifang (China), who has been the
dominant force in the 59kg category since the Asian Championships
in 2023. Luo’s incredible performances have solidified her as the top
contender for the gold medal. Her most impressive achievement came
at the last-chance Olympic qualifier in Thailand in April 2024, where
she set a new world record in the total with 248kg.

For over a year, Luo has remained at the top of the rankings,
showcasing a level of strength and consistency that has made her the
favorite for Paris.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Behind Luo is a group of talented lifters who are all vying for a place
on the podium. Kamila Konotop (Ukraine, pictured left) and Maude
Charron (Canada, pictured right) are currently tied with a 236kg total,
making them strong contenders in this weight class.

Konotop, who won the European Championships in 2023 and 2024,

has one of the strongest snatches in the category.

Charron, the 2020 Olympic champion in the 64kg category, has

successfully moved down to 59kg and has been a formidable
competitor. Her unbelievable consistency in competition and ability to
deliver under pressure will enable her to challenge for another Olympic
medal.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Also in the mix is Yenny Alvarez (Colombia), who has a total of 234kg.
Alvarez, the 2022 World Champion, was a standout performer earlier
in the quad, but unless she can return to her 2022 level she is not a
favourite for a medal contender in Paris. Her recent performances have
not been as strong as in previous years but you can’t ever count a
world champion out.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

Kuo Hsing-chun (Chinese Taipei), with a total of 232kg, remains a key
figure in the category. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist in the 59kg
weight class has had a somewhat inconsistent qualification period, with
several attempts declined in competition, leaving some uncertainty
about her full capabilities heading into Paris.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
A notable development in the 59kg category has been the shift in the
Filipino team’s lineup. Hidilyn Diaz (Philipines), the celebrated 2020
Olympic champion in the 55kg category, was unexpectedly surpassed
for the Paris spot by her teammate Elreen Ando (pictured). This
change adds an intriguing dynamic to the competition as Ando now
takes center stage.

The 59kg weight class promises a thrilling competition at the Paris

Olympics, with a field of elite athletes all striving for Olympic glory.

The -89kg weightlifting category for the Paris Olympics is shaping up

to be one of the most exciting and high-stakes sessions in the sport.
This weight class is packed with top-tier athletes, each bringing a
unique blend of experience, talent, and ambition to the table.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Leading the charge is Karlos Nasar (Bulgaria), who has been the
dominant force in the -89kg category since he burst onto the scene as
a 17-year-old in 2021.

Over the past few years, Nasar has set multiple world records and
demonstrated unparalleled strength, particularly in the clean and jerk.
His latest achievement came at the last-chance Olympic qualifier in
Thailand in April 2024, where he equalled the world record total of
396kg on his opening attempt in the clean and jerk before attempting
to set a 9kg world record with 405kg.

Recently, in a local competition, Nasar hit an incredible 408kg

total, showcasing his potential to break even more records. Nasar’s
exceptional performances have firmly established him as the leading
contender for gold in Paris.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Challenging Nasar, at least in the snatch, is Yeison López (Colombia).
López has made a significant impact in the last six months, highlighted
by his recent world record snatch of 182kg. With a total of 392kg, he is
well-positioned as a major rival to Nasar, at least in the snatch! López’s
rapid rise up the rankings and his impressive snatch performances
make him a formidable competitor in the fight for Olympic medals.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Keydomar Vallenilla (Venezuela), the 2022 World Champion, is
another top contender in this weight class. Vallenilla holds the third
position in the current rankings with a total of 385kg. His impressive
track record, including a streak of medaling in the total at 14 straight
international meets, underscores his potential to challenge for a medal
in Paris. Vallenilla’s consistency makes him a podium threat.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
The fourth-ranked lifter is Mostafa Javadi (Iran), who won the World
Championship title in 2023 with a total of 384kg. Javadi is known for
his gutsy performances and fearless approach to competition. If the
other competitors want to beat him they can’t risk leaving him with the
final lift. His ability to rise to the occasion and deliver under pressure
will be crucial as he aims for a top finish in Paris. Watch out for a
backflip!

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Rounding out the top five is Antonino Pizzolato (Italy), who has a
total of 380kg. Pizzolato, an Olympic medalist and former world
record holder, has shown that he remains a significant force in the
weightlifting world. His recent performances, including a strong
showing at the European Championships where he cleaned a monster
222kg, demonstrate that he has the potential to challenge for a medal
at the Paris Games if he can make at least two snatches.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
The 89kg weight class has been further shaped by some notable
absences. China’s decision to forgo the selection of their world record-
holding athletes, Tian Tao (pictured) and Li Dayin for fear of losing to
Bulgaria’s Karlos Nasar adds an intriguing layer to the competition.
Tian Tao and Li Dayin have both set world records in the past but will
not be competing in the -89kg category for the Paris Olympics.

As the Paris Games approach, the -89kg weightlifting category

promises to be a battleground of elite athletes all vying for Olympic
success. With Karlos Nasar as the clear leader and Yeison López,
Keydomar Vallenilla, Mostafa Javadi, and Antonino Pizzolato all poised
to challenge for the podium, the competition is set to be both intense
and captivating.

The -71kg category has been a bit of a bloodbath during the qualifying
period. The two highest totaling athletes, Liao Guifang (China)
and Song Kuk-hyang (North Korea), will not be competing in Paris;
various athletes moved out of this category to try and make selection
elsewhere; the World number one at the start of the quad is now way

the top.

At the forefront of this competitive field is Olivia Reeves (USA), who
has emerged as the dominant force in the 71kg category. Olivia’s
stunning performance at the last-chance Olympic qualifier in Thailand
in April 2024, where she defeated formidable competitors including
Liao Guifang (China) and Song Kuk-hyang (North Korea), solidified her
status as the favorite for Paris.

With a total of 268kg, including a 118kg snatch and a 150kg clean and
jerk (both of which she has since beaten at a national meet), Reeves
has shown incredible consistency and strength, making her the top
contender for the gold medal.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Challenging Reeves is Angie Dajomes (Ecuador), the current snatch
world record holder with a lift of 121kg. Dajomes, who has a total of
261kg, is a fierce competitor and a serious threat in the snatch. If she
can make all three snatches it will be difficult for anyone to beat her.
She will undoubtedly be aiming to challenge Reeves for the top spot in
Paris.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Loredana Toma (Romania), a veteran in the sport, remains a
significant name in the 71kg category despite her recent decline in
performance. Toma’s best total of 256kg in 2022 earned her the
World Championship title (and a world record), but her subsequent
performances have seen a drop in numbers. Nonetheless, her
experience and past achievements cannot be overlooked, and she
could still pose a challenge if she regains her form.

Vanessa Sarno (Philipines, pictured), with a total of 249kg, has been
a consistent and strong performer in the lead-up to the Olympics.
Sarno’s reliability in competition and her ability to deliver solid lifts
make her a real possibility of a podium finish.

Neama Said (Egypt), the 2021 World Champion, rounds out the top
five with a total of 246kg. Though she lies somewhat under the radar,
Said’s resume is impressive and her best lifts, when added together, are
big.

In addition to these top-ranked lifters, Marie Fegue (France) qualifies
as a host-nation athlete and has shown great potential, particularly in
the snatch, though she does lack some of the leg strength required
in the clean and jerk that other athletes show. Having dropped down
to this category, she will have to clean and jerk well to hold onto any
advantage she finds in the snatch.

Notably, China’s Liao Guifang (pictured), the most dominant figure in
this category throughout qualifying, was not selected for the Olympics
due to both the rise of Olivia Reeves as well as a slight injury-induced
decrease in performance. This unexpected development has shifted
the dynamics, opening the door for other athletes to shine.

As the Paris Games approach, Olivia Reeves stands as the leader in

the 71kg weight class, with Angie Dajomes, Loredana Toma, Vanessa
Sarno, Chen Wen-huei, Neama Said and others all vying for places
on the podium. The competition is set to be fierce, with each athlete
bringing their best to the quest for Olympic success.

In the early days of the 102kg category, the majority of the current top
lifters weren’t even competing in this class. Olympic champion Meso
Hassona initially took gold, but Liu Huanhua (pictured) was an 89kg
lifter, Lesman Paredes competed in the 96kg class, and Akbar Djuraev
was a super heavyweight. Since then, the 102kg category has matured
rapidly, becoming one of the tightest of the entire Games.

Leading the pack is Liu Huanhua (China) with a world record total of
413kg, achieved at the final Olympic qualifier in Thailand. Known as
“Gigachad,” Liu has been a dominant force since transitioning to the
102kg category from the 89kg category at the start of the qualifying
period. His performance in Thailand, including a record-breaking 233kg
clean and jerk, has cemented him as the favorite in this category. Liu
previously stunned the weightlifting community with a 418kg total at
the Asian Games, though it was not counted officially for the 102kg
category.

Behind Liu, the competition is incredibly tight. Garik Karapetyan
(Armenia), with a total of 401kg, is known for his elite snatching abilities
and has shown remarkable consistency. Karapetyan’s potential to
upset the field lies in his exceptional snatch technique, which could give
him the edge needed to secure a medal.

Meso Hassona (Qatar), the Olympic champion from the 96kg category
in Tokyo, is a clean and jerk specialist. He was in top form before
an injury in April, and his return to competition is highly anticipated.
Meso’s current shape is uncertain, but his previous performances put
him among the top lifters, totaling 400kg at the IWF Grand Prix in front
of a home crowd last year. His clean and jerk prowess and ability to
perform under pressure make him a thrilling athlete to watch. It’s worth
mentioning that as a 96kg weightlifter he totalled as much as 404kg.

Akbar Djuraev (Uzbekistan), also with a total of 400kg, has dropped
down from the 109kg category, where he won Olympic gold. With a
personal best total of 433kg as a 109kg weightlifter, Akbar knows
better than anyone else what it feels to lift heavier weight. Djuraev’s
impressive strength and experience in high-pressure situations make
him a strong medal threat. Despite the significant weight cut, he has
maintained a competitive edge, demonstrating his capability to contend
for a top spot.

Yauheni Tsikhantsou (competing as an individual neutral athlete),
another lifter totaling 400kg, has shown remarkable improvement and
consistency, making him a serious competitor. Tsikhantsou’s solid
performances have positioned him well within the top weightlifters, and
his continued progress will be critical in Paris.

Jang Yeonhak (South Korea) and Lesman Paredes (Bahrain, pictured)
both totaled 398kg, rounding out the top weightlifters. Paredes,
known for his massive snatches, achieved this total with only three
successful lifts out of a possible six, suggesting that he has a few more
kilos hidden away for Paris. Having made 85.7% of all his competition
snatches, Lesman is a true snatch sensation.

The competition in this category is particularly hard to predict due to

the close rankings and the high caliber of all the athletes involved. Liu
Huanhua’s dominance seems somewhat clear, but the battle for the
remaining medals promises to be one of the most thrilling events at the
Paris Olympics.

The women’s -81kg category in weightlifting has been dynamic and

fiercely competitive, featuring athletes from around the globe vying
for Olympic glory. With notable absences from China and the USA, the
field has become even more intriguing as lifters from various countries
step up to the challenge.

Leading the current rankings is Neisi Dajomes (Ecuador) with a total of
269kg. Neisi has dominated the Pan-American region since 2016 and
is peaking well with her best lifts of 123kg and 146kg, both of which she
hit at the last-chance qualifier in Thailand. Despite her dominance, she
is not known for her consistency and strength, which could be a factor
in her performance.

2024
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WEIGHTLIFTINGHOUSE.COM
Right behind her is Sara Ahmed (Egypt) with a total of 268kg. Ahmed
is a two-time world champion in the 76kg category, and the weight
increase to 81kg is expected to be beneficial for her performance.
Despite an injury at the World Championships in Saudi Arabia, she
competed in the lighter 76kg category and still emerged victorious,
showcasing her elite lifting capabilities and resilience.

Solfrid Koanda (Norway), ranked third, has a significant edge despite
her ranking. She has totaled an impressive 280kg as a light 87kg
weightlifter, making her the favorite in this category. Koanda is a three-
time world champion and has consistently increased her total at almost
every competition since her international debut in 2021. However,
there is a risk since she hasn’t cut down to 81kg in a while, which could
impact her performance.

Eileen Cikamatana (Australia) sits in fourth place with a total of
263kg. Cikamatana has set junior world records and was a rising star
throughout the junior ranks. If she can make her lifts consistently, she
will be a dangerous contender for the podium in Paris. Her explosive
lifting style and eccentric performances have earned her a place
among the top lifters in the 81kg category.

Rounding out the top five is Kim Su-hyeon (South Korea) with a total
of 256kg. Kim is a crowd favorite, known for wearing her heart on
her sleeve, regularly dancing, and engaging with the audience. Her
consistent performances have placed her among the top lifters, and
with continued improvement, she has the potential to challenge the top
lifters and secure a medal.

THE HOME OF WEIGHTLIFTERS @WEIGHTLIFTING_HOUSE

One notable absence is Liang Xiaomei from China (pictured). This is
primarily due to two reasons: the dominance of Solfrid Koanda, which
makes it difficult for China to guarantee a gold medal, and the downturn
in performance by Liang, who failed to improve between the Grand Prix
in December in Doha and the last-chance qualifier in Thailand.

The women’s -81kg category is poised for an exciting showdown in

Paris, with Solfrid Koanda leading the charge. The absence of Chinese
and American lifters has opened the field, allowing other athletes to
step up and showcase their talents. With a mix of seasoned champions
and rising stars, the competition promises to be one of the highlights of
the Olympic weightlifting events.

The men’s +102kg category in weightlifting continues to be dominated

by the unparalleled Lasha Talakhadze (Georgia, pictured). However,
the competition has intensified, with rivals Gor Minasyan (Bahrain)

lead. Here’s a closer look at the top contenders and their recent
performances.

Lasha Talakhadze stands as the titan of men’s weightlifting, holding
the current top ranking with a total of 474kg. His best-ever total,
the all-time world record, is an astounding 492kg, achieved with the
heaviest lifts ever recorded: a 225kg snatch and a 267kg clean and
jerk.

Despite his incredible feats, Lasha has faced challenges in recent years.
After injury struck post his historic 2021 performance, he experienced
his narrowest wins ever at the 2022 European Championships and
the 2022 World Championships in Bogota. Since then, Lasha has
strategically skipped the most recent European Championships and the
last-chance qualifier to recover from years of intense training and small
injuries, and to prepare for the big showdown in Paris.

Lasha aims to make weightlifting history by winning his third Olympic

gold medal, joining the ranks of only five others before him.

Gor Minasyan (pictured), originally from Armenia, now competing
for Bahrain, is a beast in the snatch, and sits in the number two spot
with a total of 464kg. His move to Bahrain has not only opened up
significant competition in the super heavyweight category but also
allowed for thrilling battles against his former teammate Varazdat
Lalayan. Gor’s recent performances, including a 217kg snatch, have
made him the second strongest snatcher in history, surpassing
legends like Behdad Salimi (Iran) and Antonio Krastev (Bulgaria). His
consistent improvement and ability to challenge Lasha have made their
showdowns particularly exciting.

Varazdat Lalayan (Armenia), closely trailing Gor with a total of 463kg,
is technically incredible but younger and seems to handle pressure a
little worse than his top rivals. His battles against Lasha and Gor at the
2023 World Championships were intense, with the medals between
him and Gor being separated by just a kilo. Lalayan’s recent gold at
the European Championships in 2024, achieved in Lasha’s absence,
has given him a boost of confidence, though he still needs to prove his
consistency and ability to perform under pressure.

Hoping to challenge Varazdat Lalayan (pictured) for a medal are some
more lifters who have shown great potential during qualifying.

Ali Davoudi (Iran), known for his immense size (he recently weighed in
at 181.12kg), has a total of 454kg. Formerly holding junior world records,
Davoudi has shown great potential but has yet to fully realize the levels
once expected of him. Despite this, he remains a crucial figure in the
+109kg category, with the ability to challenge the top lifters, especially
with his clean and jerk strength.

Man Asaad of Syria, is a rising star with a total of 445kg. Known for
his impressive leg strength as demonstrated every time he cleans a
weight, Asaad has recently become a significant threat in the category.
Despite being absent from a few competitions recently, videos of him
clean and jerking have surfaced on social media, indicating that he
might be in a position to take the final, heaviest clean and jerk of the
competition. It’s possible we will see Man Asaad take the final attempt
of the entire session.

The rest of the women’s +81kg weightlifting category is overshadowed

by the most dominant weightlifter in the world, Li Wenwen (China), but
the battle for medals below her is equally exciting. Here’s a look at the
leading contenders and their recent performances.

Li Wenwen has reasserted her dominance in the category after a
triumphant return at the last-chance qualifier. She snatched 145kg and
clean and jerked 180kg, reaffirming her status as the favorite in any
weight category in weightlifting. Her best lifts put her 30+ kilos ahead
of any other competitor, making her the favourite across all categories.

Despite suffering a significant elbow injury at the 2023 World

Championships, which temporarily cast doubt on her Olympic
selection, Li’s recent performance shows that she is back in top form.
With China selecting her for the Olympics, Wenwen remains the
athlete to beat as she hunts down her second Olympic gold medal.

Park Hye-jeong (South Korea), currently ranked second with a total of
296kg, has emerged as a formidable force in the +87kg category. At
just 21 years old, Park has already established herself with youth world
records and a series of impressive performances. She dethroned her
older teammate, 2021 World Champion Son Young-hee, and is now the
likely silver medalist. Park is incredibly strong, particularly in the squat,
and might one day find herself challenging Li Wenwen.

Emily Campbell (Great Britain, pictured) ranks third with a total of
287kg and currently looks to be in great shape. After taking time
off to recover and skipping the last chance qualifier, Campbell looks
strong and ready to compete. As the 2021 Olympic silver medalist and
a four-time European champion, Campbell’s experience and mental
toughness will be critical as she aims to reclaim her full health and
medal once again in Paris. Her ability to perform at her best in the
most crucial moments has been a hallmark of her career. At the British
Championships this July, which she used as a one-month-out tune-up
meet, she totaled 287kg and made it look very comfortable

Duangaksorn Chaidee (Thailand) has totaled 286kg and remains a

strong contender in the +87kg category. She won the silver at the
World Championships in 2021 and, despite a decrease in performance
during the subsequent years, her performance in front of a home
crowd in Thailand at the last-chance qualifier was extremely promising.
Chaidee’s resurgence makes her a significant threat for the podium.

Mary Theisen-Lappen (USA, pictured), with a total of 283kg, has
emerged as the top American in this category, having surpassed the
now-retired three-time Olympian Sarah Robles. Theisen-Lappen’s rise
has been marked by her impressive jerk strength, recently making a
188kg jerk in training, 1kg over Li Wenwen’s world record. Her recent
success and determination make her a noteworthy competitor in the
+87kg category. You don’t want to leave her with the last attempt!

The women’s +87kg category promises to deliver some of the most

thrilling moments in weightlifting at the upcoming Olympics. With
Li Wenwen aiming to solidify her legacy as the dominant force in
weightlifting, Park Hye-jeong and Emily Campbell are both striving for
the podium. The battle for silver and bronze is particularly intense,
with Duangaksorn Chaidee and Mary Theisen-Lappen also in strong
positions to seize a medal if they lift well. The stage is set for an
unforgettable competition in Paris as these talented athletes vie for the
