Architecture Design Processes

Design process refers to the process of decision making that results in a physical manifestation through considering multiple available choices in terms of ideas, materials, and technology. It facilitates selecting an option to "mark out" or designate a physical condition for a certain activity. Context is essential in design - for whom one is designing and what process should be adopted. Rather than posing problems, design processes could engage constructively with ideas while considering the socio-cultural context of the individual designer. Methods can structure design processes, though opening up more choices for users may not always have positive outcomes. Design processes inevitably involve some degree of control through boundaries or expansion.

What is design process?

Etymologically, design comes from the Latin word designare, which means to mark out 1. Design process would mean the process of decision making to bring about a physical manifestation through a mental navigation of the multiple choices available to us (in terms of ideas, material, technology, etc.). Thus, it facilitates choice so that one is able to mark out or designate a physical condition for a certain activity. In the age of globalization, where choices available to us are virtually infinite, any choice that we make could be questionable. However, such choices are in some ways, institutionalized through various agencies like schools, magazines, journals and practices. Institutionalization may result in rigidity of a system (process). It creates within us ideas of perfection and thus distances us from our own culture, thereby creating moral barriers. We often believe that anything that is designed (codified by the various institutions) is better. It is here that the introduction of context becomes essential: for whom one is designing and what process must be adopted for achieving the final design. Processes of design often try to pose a contextual condition as a design problem. The formulation of the design problem itself limits the scope of design. Rather, can design processes be seen as constructive engagements with ideas in conjunction with oneself? Here, the individual who is engaged is rooted in a certain socio-cultural setting which conditions thinking. Processes can be regulated or structured using design methods. A method is a scientific way of undertaking any task within the given parameters or accepted constraints. We generally understand this condition or method as the modernist way of working, i.e. the top-down approach. In the recent context of the digital world, quite conversely, a design process is understood as something that would allow more choices for the user (by opening up a field). Here, the role of the designer is to open out the process itself to the user, so that one is able to engage with a design in their own way. Opening up of more choices for the user may not always have desirable consequences. These new conditions make their own systems or patterns which could become interesting areas of study. The relevance of established systems must be questioned and design processes could thus be looked upon as strategies to operationalize certain physical manifests. However, the idea of limiting the universal scope of an activity cannot be escaped. Design process, is thus, inevitably about control (marking out, designating) either by a limiting boundary or creating an expanded one.
