AN INVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECT OF REMEDIAL WORK ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE ON FORM
1 LEARNERS AT NYAMAURU HIGH SCHOOL
CHAPTER 1
1.1 INTRODUCTION
In this chapter the researcher looked at the effects of remedial work on the academic performance of
form 1 students at Nyamauru High school. The researcher has looked on the background of the
study, objectives, research questions, importance of the study, statement of the problem, delimitations,
limitations of the study and definition of key terms. The chapter ended up with a brief summary of the
discussed issues of the whole chapter.
1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
There been an increase of low pass rate in Mathematics in the form 1 classes at Nyamauru High school.
This may be caused by lack of remediation, some students are slow learners, some makes a lot of errors
in learning experiences and some have intellectual disability. The researcher needed to see the effect of
giving remedial work to such students. The failure in academic performance for students drove the
researcher to carry out this study in order to find ways of improving and emphasizing the role of
remediation. Many researchers also researched about remediation
Lubienski (2003)states that remedial instruction improves low mathematical students and they gain
confidence in mathematical learning.Remedial work should be provided for students who have
performed poorly in mathematics to ensure their future academic success (Finnish national board ,
2004) .Anorld Fisher,Doctoroff and Dobbs( 2002) found that students that are given remedial work , not
only improved their mathematical skills but also showed an increased interest in mathematics.
Therefore remedial work can provide good results and good achievements not only in mathematics but
in all subjects.
Remediation work is a form of co-operation and supportive learning between students and teachers
aims to cater for individual differences, helps students who lag behind, develop interpretation skills and
help students in critical skills when learning. The teacher is required to find and use the most effective
methods that combine all processes and equipment of teaching and this also includes giving students
remedial work constantly.Remediation in the process of teaching and learning is viewed as time
consuming and not very important by some teachers(Chikwature and Oyelede 2016)
According to (Yang and Li ,2008) Teachers who perceive themselves as competent educators often have
more positive attitude towards remedial work. Sirin Vasan (2000) asserts that some students attend
schools of poor quality and don't receive adequate grounding in Mathematics and Languages. From the
situation on the ground this can be the reason why most students fail to calculate and read
properly.Children become shy of being given remedial work and tend to dislike the exercise.
Shield and Morgan (1998) asserts that "in selecting student for diagnostic assessment and
supplementary, teaching priorities must be given to those who achieve Score at or below 50% ."
Supplimentary teaching should be directed at the lowest achieving students and these students should
receive particular attention through carefully planned intervention within the classroom and where
necessary through withdrawal from the classroom for small group individual teaching. The class teacher
plays an important role in the intial identification of students who may have general or specific learning
disability.
According to Chikwature and Oyelede (2016) , remedial is considered as learning improvement service
or program ,like learning assistance for individual students,By helping students to strengthen their basic
academic skills like the ability to read ,calculate as well as the ability to communicate, student's
opportunities for success are expanded.Therefor remedial work not only improved student's ability to
be academically successful but also increases job opportunities.Chikwature and Adele (2016) claims
that, remedial classes afford students the opportunities to catch up and be on the same pages as their
peers.Jagars etal (2014) asserts that unprepared students who have completed remedial course work
achieve greater academic success than underprepared students who did not do remedial
coursework. These are some of the researchers who studied about remediation.
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The poor performance in mathematics of form 1 pupils at Nyamauru High School led the researcher to
carry out this investigation. The researcher will investigate on the effect of Remediation in the teaching
of mathematics in form 1 classes at Nyamauru High School. The researcher seeks to improve the
academic performance of form 1 pupils at Nyamauru by giving them remedial work in mathematics
subject.
1.4 OBJECTIVES
- To investigate to what extent remedial work can help students who are slow learners
- To investigate if remedial work has positive impact on students
-To investigate the effect of not giving remedial work to the learners
-To investigate how remedial work affect the academic performance of students
To investigate if remedial work has negative impact on students
-To investigate if students like the idea of being given remedial work and to see their reaction towards it
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
- What attitudes are portrayed by teachers and students towards remediation ?
- What strategies should be employed in giving students remedial work?
-What are the importance of remediation in teaching and learning?
-What do students who are given remedial work feel?
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The research is very important to everyone especially to the students ,the teacher, the School and also
the government.
To the teacher, the study will provide a valid a base to seek means of extending her students horizon of
real experiences and knowledge. The school will benefit from this survey as the school pass rates are
likely to increase due to improvement in pupils academic performance because of remediation. This
study will also provide all Mathematics teachers at Nyamauru High school with more information on
improving learner's cooperation
This research will also help students who are slow learners, students that have intellectual disability and
those that makes a lot of errors when learning not to look down upon themselves, but encourages them
to love remediation and they will have confidence. This research will also help learners to know how to
take advantage of remedial work. This will also help them to be successful in life, giving them a better
living in future and they will gain respect from everyone if they succeed as people in our society tend to
respect the successful people. They are likely to live luxurious life that will be enjoyable and interesting.
The learners will also improve in their intelligence levels and excelling in their exams.
The government will benefit more from this research as schools will produce first class skilled workforce,
which will help in the running of the economy at large like doctors, engineers, teachers, ministers,
soldiers, nurses and many others. These will have a disposable income, the government then collect a
tax that is pay as you earn and at the end of each month .These people contribute much to the
gorvenment's income which will help in development of the country and infrastructures. This study is
more much importance as it will benefit everyone directly and indirectly creating jobs for many people.
1.7 DELIMITATIONS
The research was carried in Mutare urban at Nyamauru High School. The research will make use of 10
students, including 5 boys and 5 boys .These learners are of age 13 years to 14 years, 6 admistration
members that is 3 males and 3 females and 12 qualified teachers.
1.8 LIMITATIONS
The reseacher anticipates a number of problems in trying to meet her objectives. There maybe lack of
co-operation by qualified teachers who may be not willing to share their views. The learners might not
willing to share their views. Financial problems was another chief limiting factor that was like to affect
the research as the researcher needs money for printing questionaires.Time was another factor that
limits the research as the reseacher needs time to visit her supervisor to and from college for
supervision at the same time, the researcher would have a duty to teach learners while on teaching
practice
The researcher was not familiar with the society she will be working with. This can affect the research in
that people would not quickly give their details to a stranger, so it will take time to establish a good
relationship between the researcher and the society she will work with.
1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS
. Remedial - is the process of correcting errors in the learning experiences .
. Remedial work - is an additional work assigned to students in order to achieve expected competences
. Academic- is used to describe work which involves studying and reasoning rather than practical or
technical skills (Collins dictionary)
. Performance - it refers to how an activity is done (Cambridge dictionary)
. Academic performance - it is the extent to which a student has achieved their short term and long term
educational goals
1.10 SUMMARY
This chapter looked at various aspects, which include the background to the study. It also looked at the
research questions, importance or significances of the study. The researcher went on to look at the
delimitations and limitations of the study and ended by defining key terms.
