the sound) of a window and the scuttle (make the sound/ When people or
small animals scuttle somewhere, they run there with short quick steps.)

Part 9 (56:51~ 1:04:42)
Lead-in:
Princess Fiona fought with all the robbers. There was an arrow on
9 / 23
Shrek’s butt. Fiona helped Shrek yank it out. They played around in the
field. What would happen between Shrek and Fiona? Let’s continue.
1. Soon, Shrek and Fiona come to the edge of the field.
What can be seen not far away?
The town of Duloc can be seen in the distance.
2. Shrek says, “There it is, Princess. You future awaits you.”
Fiona looks at the castle and asks, “That's Duloc?”
Donkey comes forward and says, “Yeah, I know. You know, Shrek
thinks Lord Farquaad's compensating for something, which I think
means he has a really-! ”
Just then, what does Shrek do to Donkey?
Shrek stamps on Donkey to stop him from talking.
He says, “I guess we better move on.”
3. Princess Fiona says, “Sure.” Then she blurts out, “But Shrek? I'm
worried about Donkey. ”Shrek asks, “What?”
Fiona says, “I mean, look at him, He doesn't look so good.”
Donkey protests, “What are you talking about? I'm fine.”
But Fiona doesn't listen, she says, “That's what they always say,
and then next thing you know, you are on your back, dead.”
10 / 23
What can we see from this part?
Princess Fiona is trying to find an excuse for not moving on.
Because she wants to spent one more night with Shrek. It seems
like Princess Fiona has fallen in love with Shrek.
4. Shrek also adds, “You know, she's right. You look awful. Do you want
to sit down?”
Fiona says, “I'll make you some tea.”
Donkey says weakly, “I didn't want to say nothing, but I got this
twinge (a sudden sharp pain) in my neck, and when I turn my head like
this, look. Ow! See? ”
Donkey turns his head and his neck gives a cracking sound.
Shrek and Fiona really want Donkey to excuse them for a while. So
they can stay together.
Then what excuses do Shrek and Fiona get to leave Donkey alone
for some time?
Shrek asks, “Who's hungry? I'll find us some dinner.”
Fiona says, “I'll get the fire wood.”
Shrek says he will find them some dinner, and Fiona says she will
get the fire wood.
11 / 23
5. Donkey is left alone, so he shouts, “Hey, where you going? Oh, man,
I can't feel my toes! I don't have any toes. I think I need a hug.”
What can we see from Shrek and Fiona's behaviors?
We can see Shrek and Fiona have fallen in love and they don't want
to separate from each other. They try to find excuses to have more
time to spend together.
6. In the sunset, Shrek is roasting for Fiona, and Fiona is eating happily.
Fiona gives the compliments, “This is good. This is really good.
What is this?”
What does Shrek say it is?
He says, “Weed rat. Rotisserie style.”(/rəʊˈtɪsərɪ/ Shrek roasted it that
way./body language)
7. Fiona gives the compliments again, “No kidding, well, this is
delicious.”
Then what does Shrek say about his weed rat cooking?
“Well, they're also great in stews.”(cook them slowly in liquid in a
covered pot)
Now, I don't mean to brag, but I make a mean weed rat Stew.”
Shrek says Weed rat is also great in stews and he can make weed rat
stew.
12 / 23
8. Then Fiona looks at the castle of Duloc and sighs, “I guess I'll be
dining a little differently tomorrow night.”
Shrek suggests, “Maybe you can come visit me in the swamp
sometimes. I'll cook all kinds of stuff for you. Swamp toad soup, fish eye
tarare-you name it”
What can we see from this?
We can see that Shrek is slowly changing. Before, he doesn't want
anybody in his swamp, but now he invites Princess Fiona to visit
him. He opens up his heart to Fiona.
9. Fiona smiles and says, “I'd like that.”
Then they look at each other.
Then Shrek asks, “Um, Princess?”
Fiona looks hopeful, “Yes, Shrek?”
Shrek says nervously, “I, I was wondering .Are you-”
Shrek hesitates for a long time, and what does Shrek finally ask?
“Are you gonna eat that?” He points to the weed rat in Fiona's hand.
10. Fiona hands the weed rat to Shrek.
Just as Shrek takes the weed rat, they look at each other silently.
13 / 23
Suddenly, Donkey jumps out and cries, “Man, isn't this romantic?
Just look at that sunset.”
When Fiona hears that, what is her reaction?
She jumps to her feet and repeats nervously, “Sunset? Oh, no, I mean,
it's late. It's very late.”
11. Shrek doesn't understand. He asks, “What?”
Donkey says, “Wait a minute, I see what's going on here. You're
afraid of the dark, aren't you?”
Fiona quickly says, “Yes! Yes, that's it! I'm terrified. You know, I'd
better go inside.”And she walks away.
Donkey calls after her, “Don't feel bad, Princess! Used to be afraid
of the dark too, until … hey, no, wait. I'm still afraid of the dark.”
Then what does Fiona do?
She walks into the wooden hut and says to Shrek, “Good night.”
Shrek says, “Good night.”
12. Donkey looks at them and says, “Now, I really see what's going on
here.”
Shrek sits down again and says, “Oh, what are you talking about?”
What does Donkey say?
14 / 23
Donkey says, “I don't even wanna hear it. Look, I'm an animal and I
got instincts, I know you two were digging on each other. I could
feel it.”
Donkey got instinct that Shrek and Fiona have fallen in love.
13. Shrek says to him, “You're crazy, I'm just bringing her back to
Farquaad.”
Donkey says, “Oh, come on, Shrek. Wake up and smell the
pheromones (/ˈfɛrəˌməʊn/ ). Just go on in and tell her how you feel.”
Shrek says, “There's nothing to tell. Besides, even if I did tell her
that, well, you know, and I'm not saying I do cause I don't… she's a
princess, and I'm …”Donkey says for him, “An ogre?”
Shrek says, “Yeah. An ogre.” And he walks away.
What can we see from this part?
Shrek has fallen in love with Princess Fiona, but he doesn't want to
tell her what he feels. Because he is an ugly ogre. Fiona is a princess.
Shrek thinks Princess Fiona won't be able to love him.
14. Donkey asks him, “Hey, where you going?”
Shrek says, “To get…more firewood.”
Donkey sees a pile of firewood beside him.
But why does Shrek say he will get more firewood?
15 / 23
Shrek wants to find an excuse to stay alone for a while. He needs
some time to think about how to tell Princess Fiona his feeling.
Then he goes to the edge of the sunflower field and sits there till it's
dark.
From this little part we can see that Shrek and Fiona fall in love with
each. Will they tell each other their feelings? What else will happen to
them? Now let’s continue.
15. It is nighttime. Donkey walks into the wooden hut where Princess
Fiona is in. He calls, “Princess? Princess Fiona? Princess, where are
you?”
He tiptoes in the room, looking around.
Birds flatter above Donkey, and someone steps on the stairs, which
is creaking.
Donkey continues, “It's very spooky in here.
I ain't playing no games.”
Someone falls down from the stairs and crashes in front of Donkey.
When the person slowly gets up, it looks like a monster.
16. Donkey is very scared, he yells, “Aah! No help! Shrek! Shrek! ”
The person tries to shush Donkey, “No, it's okay.”
16 / 23
And the person walks out of the shadow.
How does the person look?
It is an ogress, dressed in a green dress.
17. Donkey asks, “What did you do with the princess?”
What is the answer of the ogress?
The ogress says, “Donkey, I'm the princess. It's me, in this body.”
The ogress says she is Princess Fiona, and princess is in her body.
18. Donkey misunderstands. He shouts, “Oh, my God! You ate the
princess!”
Then what does Donkey do?
He yells at the ogress's stomach, “Can you hear me? Listen, keep
breathing! I'll get you out of there! Shrek. Shrek!”
19.Then the ogress holds donkey's face and looks deep into his eyes,
saying softly,“This is me.”
Now what does Donkey realize?
Donkey finally realizes that it is Princess Fiona.
17 / 23
20.Donkey asks, “Princess. What happened to you? You're
different.”Princess Fiona says sadly, “I'm ugly, okay? What does Donkey
think about the difference that happened to Princess Fiona?”
“Well, yeah! Was it something you ate? Cause I told Shrek those rats
was a bad idea. You are what you eat, I said.”
Donkey thinks Princess Fiona has become ugly just because she ate
those rats.
21. But Princess Fiona says, “No. I've been this way as long as I can
remember.”
Donkey doesn't understand, he asks, “What do you mean? Look, I
ain't never seen you like this before.”
What does Fiona explain?
Fiona explains, “It only happens when the sun goes down. By night
one way, by day another. This shall be the norm until you find true
love's first kiss and then take love's true form.”
Fiona explains that when the sun goes down she will become an
ogress ([ˈoʊɡrɪs]). She is an ogress at night, and she is a princess at
daytime. She will look like her true love when she finds true love's
first kiss.
18 / 23
22. After hearing that, Donkey says, “That's beautiful. I didn't know you
wrote poetry.”
What does Fiona tell Donkey?
She tells Donkey, “It's a spell. When I was a little girl, a witch cast a
spell on me. Every night I become “this”. This horrible, ugly beast! I
was placed in a tower to await the day my true love would rescue me.
That's why I have to marry Lord Farquaad tomorrow before the
sun sets and he sees me like this.”And she begins to cry.
Fiona tells Donkey it's a spell. When she was a little girl, a witch
cast a spell on her. Every night she becomes a horrible, ugly beast.
She was placed in a tower to await the day her true love would rescue
her. That's why she has to marry Lord Farquaad next day before
the sun sets and he sees her like that.
23. After hearing that, how does Donkey comfort Princess Fiona?
“All right, all right. Calm down. Look, it's not that bad. You're not
that ugly. Well, I ain't gonna lie. You are ugly. But you only look like
this at night. Shrek's ugly 24-7.”
Donkey says Princess Fiona only looks like that at night, but
Shrek's ugly night and day.
24. But Princess Fiona doesn't cheer up by Donkey's words. Why not?
19 / 23
She sobs, “But Donkey, I'm a princess, and this is not how a princess
is meant to look.”
Because Fiona is a princess, and this is not how a princess is meant
to look.
25. Then Donkey suggests, “Princess, how about if you don't marry
Farquaad?”
“I have to. Only my true love's kiss can break the spell.”
Then what does Donkey suggest?
“But, you know, you're kind of an ogre and Shrek-well, you got a lot
in common.”
Donkey advised Fiona to marry Shrek, just because Shrek is an
ogre and Fiona is an ogress. They got a lot in common.
26. Princess Fiona asks, “Shrek?”
Meanwhile, Shrek comes outside the hut.
He holds a sunflower in his hand and what does he say to himself?
“Princess, I, how's it going, first of all? Good? Um, good for me too.
I'm okay. I saw this flower and thought of you because it's pretty
and-well, I don't really like it, but I thought you might like it cause
you're pretty. But I like you anyway. I'd…”
20 / 23
Shrek wants to tell Fiona how he loves her. So Shrek is practicing the
words that he is going to express to Fiona.
27. He sighs, “I'm in trouble. Okay, here we go.”And Shrek walks up to
the door. He overhears the conversation between Princess Fiona and
Donkey.
What does he hear?
Fiona is saying, “I can't just marry whoever I want. Take a good look
at me, Donkey. I mean, really, who could ever love a beast so
hideous and ugly? “Princess”and “ugly”don't go together. That's why
I can't stay here with Shrek. My only chance to live happily ever after
is to marry my true love. Don't you see, Donkey. That's just how it
has to be.”
Shrek has overheard Fiona said she can't stay here with Shrek, just
because “Princess”and “ugly” don't go together, so her only
chance to live happily ever after is to marry her true love.
28. Actually, what does Fiona mean?
Fiona meant she is princess, but she is ugly. And no one could ever
love a beast so hideous and ugly. That's why she cannot marry Shrek.
So she got to marry her true love to break the spell.
21 / 23
29.Shrek is very disappointed when he hears this. He sighs and throws
the sunflower on the porch.
Why is Shrek so sad?
Because he thinks Princess Fiona refers to him, that “ugly” means
him. But Fiona actually was talking about herself. We can see that,
Shrek has misunderstood Fiona.
Summary:
1. Shrek and Fiona found an excuse to stay together for one more night.
What happened to them?
----They had fallen in love.
2. Donkey saw what had happened between Shrek and Fiona. What did
Donkey ask Shrek to do?
----Donkey asked Shrek to tell Princess Fiona how he felt.
3. At night, Donkey walked into the hut to look for Princess Fiona. What
did he see?
----He saw an ogress who was actually Fiona.
4. Why did Fiona become an ogress ([ˈoʊɡrɪs]) at night?
----Fiona told him that a witch had cast a spell on her when she was
little. Ever since, she would turn into an ogress after sunset. The spell
could only be broken by true love's first kiss and she would look like
her true love.
22 / 23
5. On the other hand, Shrek was ready to tell Fiona his feelings. He
overheard the conversation between the two outside. What did he think?
----Shrek thought Fiona was referring to him as a hideous beast.
23 / 23
