5 Version of Caesar II and NozzlePro - Caesar II Version 2019 (Version 11), PRG 2015 Suite (NozzlePRO, FE/Pipe, etc.) - -
COMMON
6 Standard Supports - Available, see JPI for client approved Worley Pipe Support Standard - -
- Existing Piping shall be modeled up to the nearest equipment, or nearest anchor, or up to two guides in different axes
or a line stop. Resting supports may be assumed based on Laser scan data.
7 Supports on Existing Piping near Tie-ins - For tie-ins on long Existing lines, positive verification of Existing supports may be required, if no reasonable judgment
can be made for the stop / anchor locations. Identify such locations early on when reviewing the package for
completeness and inform BTR lead.
- Enter correct line number for each line in the "Line Number" text box in Caesar
9 Line Number Tags
- Change the color of existing portions of pipe in Caesar II, so that it is distinguishable from new piping

STRESS
RELATED
- For lines that show "Calc Wall" either in the thickness column or in the Remarks column of PDM, the calculation
performed by BTR Piping Engineering needs to be attached with the calc. BTR will provide these wall calcs, GID does not
have to perform wall calcs.
5 Wall Thickness - Any discrepancies between the wall calc and line list shall be brought to BTR attention before submitting the calc for
HOR.
- Note that for 12" and larger, Sch 40/40S does not match Sch. STD.
- Incorrect wall thicknesses on the isometrics shall be marked up with the correct numbers.
- Piping Stresses to be qualified for the min. ambient temp., normal operating temp., design temp., range between min.
6 B31.3 Code Stress Qualification ambient and design temp., and any possible startup / shutdown cases, sustained cases, occassional (seis.,wind,
transients, etc.)
- Piping stress as well as Nozzle loads shall also be checked for Steam-Out case, if the Steam-Out Temperature is
7 Role of Steam-Out Temperature in stress and nozzle qualification
governing. Pumps and other rotating equipment WILL NOT be checked in the steam out case.
8 Friction Coefficients - CS / CS = 0.4, SS / Teflon = 0.04, Teflon/Teflon = 0.04, CS/Concrete (non-Lubricated) = 0.6
- Friction shall only be applied in Y or +Y supports (vertical direction). Friction shall not be applied on lateral supports
9 Application of Friction Coefficient
(guides and stops) or on spring supports.

- Use pumps rated operating temperature (which should coincide with normal operating temp. or max sustained temp.
on the line-list) and sustained cases for pump nozzle load evaluation.
- Nozzle load evaluation to be performed based on 2 x API 610 (in absence of vendor allowables) with Appendix F check
as long as the pump has a standby pump.
10 Pump Modeling / Evaluation Philosophy - Perform a pump disconnect check in the WNC case, deflection should be limited to 1/8".
- For Pump Operating and Standby Cases:
- Ignore standby case on pumps with normal operating temperature 100 F and below
- keep an eye out for lines with Min. maintained temperature around the pumps, use that temp if specified when the
line is not in service.
- Nozzles on Fixed equipment shall be evaluated using Nozzlepro for worst case of operating temp., design temp.,
11 Cases for Nozzle Load Evaluation startup/shutdown cases along with the higher of Wind or Seismic loading.
- Nozzles on rotating equipment may be evaluated for the operating temperature and working/standby cases.
STRESS
RELATED
All trunnions are made from pipes rather than structural members. - -
- Trunnion shall be modeled as a pipe element (not rigid), size of trunnion should be as per support standard.
- For trunnion Node Points, label them as 1 node higher than the "To" Node Point in which you are connecting the
trunnion to. For example, if pipe elbow is Node Point 150-160, with the midpoint being 159, trunnion should be "From"
= 159 and "To" 161. Not Node Point 10160, as previously done.
- When FEA is performed for a trunnion, the SIF can be removed from Caesar II model.
- Trunnion material shall match the material of the pipe and use actual material allowable.

- When a trunnion is welded to an elbow, there will be a loss in flexibility. This loss in flexibility will be accounted for by
selecting "Single Flange" option on the bend for all pipe sizes.
- For trunnions welded to pipe sizes 36" and larger, FEA (Bend pro) shall be used to evaluate the SIF and flexibility of the
elbow and applied in Caesar.
Minimum spacing between welds should be the higher of: 3" or 4 times the wall thickness of the pipe.
- Please mark the isometric if the minimum distance is not maintained. Solutions could be to move things around, or if
it’s a shoe support, maybe shorten the shoe length.
14 Minimum Spacing Between Welds
- Be careful when increasing the member size on trunnions, check to see if you can actually accommodate the trunnion
there without encroaching in the minimum weld spacing. Look in SPR, give directions to piping if required to move
components.
- All Flanges shall be qualified using NC-3658.3. In case of flange failures in NC-3658.3, Caesar II flange stress evaluation
model shall be used.
- If pipe size, material, or temperature changes, update the flange check parameters and yield stress values, do not
15 Flange Qualification automatically reuse previous values.
- If the flange pair is bimetallic, use the lower yield strength values.
- Flanges to be checked for sustained, normal ope., design temp, startup/shutdown, and any external forces (slug, PSV,
etc.)
- For Closed Systems: Force = Set Pressure x Orifice Area (This is a very simplistic evaluation of force, however, typically
the forces in closed systems are relatively low)
16 PSV Systems
- For Open Systems: Use Jacobs BTR PSV Force Calc Sheet. Also, piping must be supported/restrained to permit
independent removal of the PR valve from the piping system.
18 Two Phase Flow Lines - Modal analysis shall be performed, preferred frequency range of 5 Hz.
19 Standard Support Gaps - Standard Support Gaps of 1/8" shall be applied. Any Gap other than 1/8" needs to be called out on the isometric.
20 Allowed Deflection Between Suppports - 3/4" in sustained case (BTR practice) unless otherwise required
- Long Elements need to be broken into reasonable lengths. This is very important for correct calculation of deflection as
well as stresses in sustained, occasional and expansion cases.
- Use following criteria:
21 Breaking Long Elements
-Pipe Size 2" and Smaller: Max. 4 ft length between two nodes.
-Pipe Size 3" thru 12": 20D max element length between two nodes.
-Larger than 12": Max. 20 ft length between two nodes.

23 Modeling of Vessels / Towers - In general, model as Rigid. However, in some cases, pipe modeling may be allowed, if it offers some advantages.
STRESS 26 Liftup Support Case Stress Check -Will be using the ALT sustain stress to check the lift up case
RELATED
- Change the Friction Stiffness in the Caesar configuration file to achieve convergence.
- If changing the friction stiffness does not solve this problem, then ignore friction, close gaps, or code Y restraints.
27 Convergence of Caesar II files
- If friction was removed near a rotating equipment nozzle for convergence reasons, slide plate to be called out, as the
ignoring of friction at that location may be helping to reduce the nozzle loads.
- Standard valve weights to be used from Caesar database for piping up to 10". Pay special attention to all large bore
valve weights and request information from BTR lead if vendor data is not available.
- Control valve weights to be taken as 1.5 times of Globe Valve Weights, unless the control valve is near a spring, in which
case more accurate weight data may be required, and must be requested by GID.
28 Valves and Actuators - Weights and Modeling
- Be aware of valves with large actuators, need to model the actuators with weights in these cases. Special attention is
required for large actuators in the horizontal plane, supports may be required for these actuators.
- Discuss with instrumentation engineer if such actuators need supporting, and where, so they can request the vendor
for recommendations.

- Include Operating temp., Design Temp., Steam out (if applicable), Min. Ambient Temp, working/standby,
29 Load cases
startup/shutdown cases, preferably in the order specified. Add other cases as necessary.
- Do not ignore very large vertical loads on support points, whether it be a shoe or a bare pipe w/repad resting on steel.
- When D/T ≥ 95: Pay special attention to max. vertical load on pipes with shoes. Also pay attention to large side (guide)
loads on uninsulated pipes that might require a repad on the sides as well.
30 Vertical Load on Shoes and Resting Supports - The above two situations may require a Local stress check using Nozzlepro/FE Pipe, at the max load locations, to judge
the strength.
- Inform BTR piping lead before submitting the calc for HOR for such situations. BTR can help by doing that analysis, if
required.
STRESS
RELATED 31 Use of U-Bolts - Allowed only on uninsulated lines 4" and smaller. Anything greater value will need a case by case evalution
- For pipe sizes 3" and larger, specify a minimum guide / stop load of 100D.
32 Minimum Guide or Stop loads - For 2" and smaller, specify a minimum guide / stop load of 50D.
- In case that yields unreasonably large loads, discuss with BTR lead.
- One iso will have the combined load at the common node, and the other iso will have a note “For Combined load at 3D
33 Breaks Between two Calcs, and Common Support Loads stop node XXX, See SI-XXXX”.

- When a line is qualified visually using engineering judgment, some level of documentation is required to show how that
judgment was applied.
3 Visual Checks - The thermal movements expected at the boundary conditions of the visual check line shall be marked on the isometric.
- Approximate thermal movements shall be marked near changes in direction if movement is 1/2" or greater.
- Approximate loads shall be marked for all supports.
DOCUMENTATION
- Keep an eye out for any unreasonably large file sizes with a small number of sheets in them, rescan with correct
properties/different scanner.
- As much as possible, keep the file size to 14.9MB or below, to allow sending the stress isos as an attachment to the JPI
3 Stress Iso PDF File Sizes
notifications.
- In some circumstances, when there are too many stress isos (>50 usually) the size may increase and go beyond 15MB,
that is understandable.
