the Plan
Awareness Why do we believe that life is possible only on planets where oxygen is present?
Oxygen is necessary for life to exist. Without it, the cells in the body would not be able
to release the energy in food for power, and they would die within minutes.
When you inhale air, your respiratory system gets oxygen. When you exhale, carbon dioxide
is released.
How do the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to carry out their common
purpose?

Activity To understand deeper the mechanisms of the organ systems working together, let us explore
and analyze the concepts below. (Cited from Science – Grade 9, Alternative Delivery Mode

Coordinated Functions, First Edition, 2020)

Activity 1. THE ADVENTURES OF OXYGEN and CARBON DIOXIDE!

Direction: Follow the adventure of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide inside your
body. Arrange the given items below to trace the journey of Oxygen
and Carbon Dioxide inside your body. Use letters A to J for the
sequence of events with “A” as the beginning and “J” as the end.
Write your answers on the space provided.
_____1. The cells are very small but their work is here very amazing. Imagine
they will make me a form of energy?
_____2. I am transformed now as energy, and carbon dioxide is formed. I
wonder where will carbon dioxide go?
_____3. I see carbon dioxide is going to the right part of the heart. Will it stay
there forever?
_____4. Hi there, I am oxygen and your nose and mouth bring me inside your
lungs.
_____5. I am in your lungs now, but I will not stay here longer so I have to go
to the left part of your heart.
_____6. The carbon dioxide leaves the body from the lungs. So carbon dioxide
is not meant to stay in your body.
_____7. I got it, I enter the body and the cells used me. So I must be useful
inside the body for special functions. However, as I get inside the body
carbon dioxide moves out as a waste. Therefore, carbon dioxide is not
useful inside the body.
_____8. Your heart drives me to the bloodstream so I can go to the cells of your
body.
_____9. I guess it won’t, from the right part of the heart it keeps on moving
and now going to the lungs. Where will it go next?
_____10. I knew it! Amazing! This is how Respiratory and Circulatory System
works together. Do you agree with me? Great!

answers:

Students will perform this activity to learn more about the gas exchange that takes place in
the respiratory and circulatory systems.

Activity 2
Just Go with the Flow!

Objectives:
 Describe blood flow and gas exchange within the heart, circulatory system, and lungs
 Explain the mechanism of how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together
Materials:
Paper strips Rope or ribbon
Marking pen Chalk

Procedure:
1. Perform the activity with your group mates (7-8 persons).
2. Assign and label different areas in the outdoor setting as: lungs, left atrium, left
ventricle, arteries, capillary, veins, right ventricle, and right atrium.
3. Using the marking pen, write down the word oxygen on as many paper strips as
you can and place them in the lung area. The capillary area should have papers
with carbon dioxide written on them.

4. Use the chalk to mark and define the different areas such as what is given in the
diagram below. Assign some members of your group to stand still on the different
marked areas.

5. Choose two members from the group to take the trip around the different posts.
Let the partners start the tour in the lung area and together pick up a paper
labeled as oxygen from another member standing at his post. They should carry
the strip of paper to the heart, passing through the left atrium, and then to the left
ventricle. As the partners go to every station, they must leave a trail of rope or
ribbon held by another member in a designated area, until the path of the journey
is completely traced.
6. Partners must run along the chalk marks representing the arteries into the
capillary area.
7. Tell the partners to exchange the strip of paper representing oxygen for a piece
of paper representing carbon dioxide with a member in his designated area.
8. Make the partners run along the chalk marks representing the veins into the
heart area, first to the right ventricle, then to the right atrium.
9. The partners must then run back into the lung area where the process begins
again. When there are no more strips of paper, the activity is over. The leader
may want to keep placing new papers into designated areas to keep the game
going on longer.
10. After the activity, record your observations and answer the guide questions.

Activity 3
Let’s Organize!
In this activity, students will be able
• Identify the components of the circulatory system
• Explain the different types of circulation
Procedure:
Using the given graphic organizer, fill in the missing parts, description, and
functions to complete the entire concept.

Analysis Guide Questions:

1. What takes place when you inhale and exhale?
Gas exchange happens when we inhale and exhale. We take in the oxygen, and emit
carbon dioxide. Gas exchange happens when we inhale and exhale. We take in the oxygen
and emit carbon dioxide.
2. What does blood deliver to every part of the body?
The blood delivers nutrients, oxygen, and other chemicals that are absorbed by the
Body
3. Why is oxygen important to your body?
Oxygen is important to our body because it processes the nutrients in the cell to make
energy.
4. How will you describe the sequence of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and blood flow in
your own words?
Oxygen enters the respiratory system through inhalation and then it enters the blood
stream to be circulated throughout the body. Carbon dioxide from the tissues enter the
blood, then to the lungs where it is exhaled.

Abstraction How do the heart and the lungs work together?

The heart pumps the blood that transports the inhaled oxygen to every cell of the body.
Carbon dioxide is given off in the process and is carried by the blood to the lungs and is
released through exhalation

What will happen if one part of the system fails to carry out its function properly?
-The other parts of the breathing system will not be able to carry out their corresponding
functions as well, and the whole respiratory system will be affected.

Application What is the important role of circulatory system in our body?

The circulatory system does a very important job in your body. It carries oxygen and
essential nutrients to all cells around the body in arteries and carries the waste products and
carbon dioxide in veins.
What will happen if oxygen is not transported by the blood to other parts of the body?
The cells in our body will not be able to process the nutrients to provide energy for the body
and they will die.

Assessment What I Have Learned (Fill in the missing information)

1. The _________________________ is an organ system responsible for taking in
oxygen and expelling out carbon dioxide.
2. The parts of the respiratory system that are in charge of supplying oxygen
are the _________, _________, _________, ________, and ________.
