d. Solve problems involving fractions, decimals, and percent

Expressing Fractions to Decimals and Percent

In the set of Real Numbers, Fractions and Decimals are in the same category. That is, most decimals, if
not all can be converted to Fractions and some fractions maybe converted to decimals. The following
are types of fractions written as decimals:

Types of Fractions Examples

Terminating. These are types of fractions that when converted

to decimals, they just terminate.

Repeating Non – Terminating. These are types of fractions that

when converted to decimals, the first quotient keeps on
repeating and repeating without bound.

Repeating Terminating. These are types of fractions that when

converted to decimal numbers, have the value that repeats and
terminates.

Non – Repeating Non – Terminating. These are types of

fractions that when converted to decimal numbers, have the
value that does not repeat and does not terminate.

Activity 1

Encircle the fractions in the right side that are repeating and
underline the fractions that are terminating.

Fractions to Decimals
In converting Fractions to Decimals, one has to be acquainted with the division of numbers. Let us take
into considerations the following fractions that we want to convert to decimals. Let us use the Scientific
Calculator with model fx-991MS (S.V.P.A.M.). The key to be used is

Using the Scientific Calculator, press 1, The ordinary division

process looks like the

Decimals to Fractions

In converting Decimals to Fractions, one has to be acquainted with the way the decimal is read. Let us
take into considerations the following decimals that we want to convert to fractions.

Fractions to Percent

Percent comes from the Latin phrase, “Per Centum”, which means one in every one hundred. Therefore,
to convert the fractions to percent, we need to multiply it by 100 and affix

the percent sign (%). In this part of our lesson, we will be using our scientific calculators. Consider the
examples below:

Fraction Decimal Percent

Using the Scientific Calculator, press 4 then press and press 25.
Press the equal sign and multiply the fraction by 100. The screen will
show 16. Affix the percent symbol.

Using the Scientific Calculator, press 3 then press and press15.

Press the equal sign and multiply the fraction by 100. The screen will
show 20. Affix the percent symbol.

Using the Scientific Calculator, press 1 then press and press 3.

Press the equal sign and multiply the fraction by 100. The screen will

show Affix the percent symbol.

If the screen shows the decimal value, press the fraction key again.

Using the Scientific Calculator, press 3 then press and press 7.

Press the equal sign and multiply the fraction by 100. The screen will

show Affix the percent symbol.

If the screen shows the decimal value, press the fraction key again.

Problems Involving Decimals, and Percent

Most problems involving decimals and percent are visible in doing research, especially in the
presentation of data like the respondents of the study presented according to gender, tribe, social
status, and probably civil status. Presented below are examples.

1.) Suppose a researcher wants to determine the percentage equivalents of her respondents
according to gender and obtains the information below:

Gender Frequency

Male 12

Female 38

Total 50

Complete the table by adding the percentage column.

Solution:

To complete the table, there is a need to add a percentage column. To compute for the percentage of
the male respondents, divide its frequency by the total number of respondents and to compute for the
percentage of the female respondents, divide its frequency by the total number of respondents.
Similarly to compute for the percentage of the total respondents, divide its frequency by the total
number of respondents. Hence,

Gender Frequency Percentage

Male 12

Female 38

Total 50

2.) The original price of the book offered for sale was PHP 540.00. Maria bought the book and paid
only PHP 480.00. How much percent did Maria save?

Solution: In order to determine the savings of Maria in percent, there is a need to determine how much
did she save from this economic activity. Thus,

To avoid errors in the presentation, the expression, is more preferred than

3.)Mr. Graham got this pay slip from his employer for a month of work. Describe in percentage the
details found in the pay slip.
