Assessment of Surface Cleanliness ISO 8501-1.
All surface preparation and coating activities shall be performed in line with project
approved HSE procedures and shall satisfy the applicable statutory HSE Regulations.
Material Safety Data Sheets for all coating products shall be supplied prior to work
commencing.
The disposal of any hazardous waste shall be performed in accordance with a project-
approved procedure.
On completion of the coating activities all non-hazardous waste, i.e. empty cans, rags,
brushes, etc., shall be removed from site and disposed of in accordance with the Waste
Management.

programmed, execution and progress of work.
• Shall be responsible for monitoring the activities carried out as per this method of
statement and ensure clients approval for the work completed.
• Shall be responsible for witnessing all activities carried out during all stages of
works.
Painting Inspector
This control shall be performed at the start of each shift and when restarting the
painting machines when it has been off for more than 15 minutes.
All hose connections shall have safety-locking pins in place and anti-whiplash
loops fitted.
Only approved coatings shall be used and shall be supplied in sealed containers
with a label attached identifying colour, batch number, and expiry date and shelf
life storage instructions.
6.2 Preparation

6.3 Blasting
Prior to any surface preparation a confirmation shall be obtained from the Quality
Department confirming completion of construction and inspection.
Any oil and grease contamination shall be removed by solvent or alkali cleaning.
All surfaces shall be inspected for surface laminations; slivers, scars, etc.,
detrimental to the protective coating system shall be removed and suitable dressed
and re-blasted.
Surface preparation shall not take place when the ambient air temperature is below
5°C, when the humidity is greater than 85% or when the metal surface temperature
is less than 3°C.
6.4 Coating
Paint Mixing: It plays a vital role in deciding the coating life, identify the right
paint system by physically verifying the packing identification on the gallons.
Strip coat: All places difficult to cover properly by spray should be stripe coated
with brush immediately before spray application and if necessary also after spray
application.
One coat Epoxy Primer Berger Zincanode 620 shall be applied to give minimum dry
film thickness of 70 microns. Primer shall be free of all visible imperfections
including but not limited to pinholes, runs, sags and blisters. If they are discovered,
remedial action shall be taken prior to application of subsequent coat.
One Intermediate‐coat Berger EPILUX 219 is a high build Epoxy polyamide coating with
good resistance properties shall be applied to give minimum dry film thickness of 175
microns. Mid‐coat shall be free of all visible imperfections including but not limited to
pinholes, runs, sags and blisters. If they are discovered, remedial action shall be taken
prior to application of subsequent coat.
Top coat –Berger LUXATHANE 5000 (RAL 9002) is a two component Acrylic Polyurethane
giving a high performance finished in new construction and maintenance industries, shall
be applied to give minimum dry film thickness of 75 microns. Topcoat shall be free of all
visible imperfections including but not limited to pinholes, runs, sags and blisters. If they
are discovered, remedial action shall be taken prior to application of subsequent coat.
If a sub-contractor will be used for painting, the sub-contractor will follow the
ITP, and the Project Specification and procedure.
6.5 Repairs
Any defective areas shall be repaired following the same procedure as that for the
original coating.
Areas found to be under thickness shall have additional coats applied to achieve the
required thickness following coating manufacturer’s recommendations.
In the event of areas found to be over thickness the Company shall be advised, who
will decide on appropriate action. Refer to Project Specification.
The colour of paint for structural steel shall be in accordance Project Specification
Standard Colour Schedule.
7.0 Inspection
Visual inspection of coated surfaces shall be performed identifying any sags, runs, mud
cracking, pinholes, loss of adhesion, etc. All such defects shall be repaired.
Wet film thickness (WFT) measurements shall be taken throughout the painting operation
in order to determine that the correct dry film thickness (DFT) will be achieved.
Dry film thickness (DFT) measurements shall be taken covering each completed coat in
accordance with SSPC-PA-2.

or changing accessories.
18. Remove any wrenches and adjusting tools before turning
on a tool.
19. Inspect the cord for fraying or damage before each use.
Tag defective tools must be immediately returned to the
store man.
20. During use, keep power cords clear of tools and the path
that the tool will take.
21. Use clamps, a vice or other devices to hold and support the
piece being worked on, when practical to do so. This will
allow you to use both hands for better control of the tool
and will help prevent injuries if a tool jams or binds in a
work piece.
22. Use only approved extension cords that have the proper
wire size (gauge) for the length of cord and power
requirements of the electric tool that you are using. This
will prevent the cord from overheating.
23. Suspend power cords over aisles or work areas to eliminate
stumbling or tripping hazards.
24. Eliminate octopus connections: if more than one receptacle
plug is needed, use a power bar or power distribution strip
that has an integral power cord and a built‐in over current
protection.
25. Pull the plug, not the cord when unplugging a tool. Pulling
the cord causes wear and may adversely affect the wiring
to the plug and cause electrical shock to the operator.
26. Follow good housekeeping procedures ‐ keep the work
area free of clutter and debris that could be tripping or
slipping hazards.
27. Keep power cords away from heat, water, oil, sharp edges
and moving parts. They can damage the insulation and
cause a shock.
28. Ensure that cutting tools, drill bits, etc. are kept sharp,
